Bonus: A bit of an evening trainspot at Sydney Central, Friday March 10th
Now, I'm really not one for standing on the edge of a platform for hours and taking down numbers of the trains that pass by. Effectively, I don't spot. I do record trains (strictly those with British TOPS numbers and NIR only) for haulage, mind you, but no - I don't see a train and write it's number down.
However, after finishing uni early and walking to Redfern station in the glorious weather, I did take an incoming OSCAR bound for Wyong via Chatswood one stop to Sydney Central and it was very pleasant to stand in the midst of this vast, largely outside 25-platform station (15 terminus, 10 through) and watch the big variety of double-decker multiple units all pass through at great frequency. I thought maybe some of you might be interested - if not, no worries, just skip this and await the next report due soon (Tasmania) - in seeing all of the units that Sydney sees, and what they're called. It might mean you know which type of train I'm talking about in reports when I refer to travelling on certain sets too! Most are Electric trains, and Opal valid aboard them on any route, unless stated. The V Sets and the XPlorer/XPT are the only trains in the state to have 2+2 seating rather than 3+2.
Anyway, within an hour I managed to get a photo all of the (non-charter/luxury) passenger trains that serve Sydney Central, Australia's biggest and busiest railway station, other than sadly the XPT which was not in the station at the time. That's a loco though, so shall we say I spotted all of the UNIT types
I have included the routes one can find each set type on, with the routes where they're the most dominant class type emboldened.

The D Sets/Marijung (long-distance versions of the Waratahs) will replace the H Sets/OSCAR, T Sets and V Sets on all electrified Intercity routes this year. V Sets will be scrapped. H Sets will be reconfigured for suburban use and transferred to suburban Sydney services, replacing the K Sets which will be scrapped.
XPT and XPlorer/Endeavour DMUs are to be replaced in coming years by CAF-built DMUs.
The Indian Pacific (Diesel) also visits weekly with a train to Perth via Adelaide, taking approximately three days. This is a privately owned charter/luxury train.
All images taken by myself on 10/3/2023. Hope you find this interesting. Keep an eye out for the upcoming report of my spontaneous Tasmanian adventure in Hobart. If you haven’t already read my recent report published yesterday about my trip to the incredible Port Stephens (including an XPT journey in First Class), you can follow the link here:
