I might have a trip out on this service this coming summer, especially in view of the interesting routing between Derby & Grantham.

Does anyone know, please, if the first-class is de-classified on this HST, as I can't find any reference to first-class fares.

If I'm going to go, I may as well go in comfort, as I'll only be going for the ride!

The train only conveys Standard Class accommodation, therefore any coaches marked '1st' are treated as Standard Class.

Looks like it's running via Melton, Peterborough and Grantham. Not sure how the dubious 1Sxx headcodes came this far without being challenged - you might end up off to Scotland!

Is it stopping between derby and Grantham or are EMT doing their usaual trick where these things are concerned and forgetting about passengers from Leicestershire.

It's not uncommon for Class 1 trains to have interregional codes without being interregional though. For instance SWT Ascot terminators usually have 1Sxx codes. Exeter to Waterloo and Swansea to Paddington both use 1Lxx.

That's true - there are probably other class 1 examples too (class 2s tend to make more use of them anyway, as there aren't so many inter-regional examples). 1S01 (to Skegness) will be right behind 1S08 (to Scotland) entering Doncaster PSB's area in this case though!

Yes - it should be an interesting ride through Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Peterborough & Lincolnshire!

Thank you for all your comments. :D

For the price of an off-peak return Derby-Skegness [with Senior Card], I wouldn't mind even that!

Can someone tell me when this service will be on? Just had a quick look at NR which seems to suggest you have to catch something called a 'bus' to Nottingham.....

It's intended to save those from Derby from two buses, and runs on summer Peak Saturdays during the Nottingham blockade.
Details can be found here:-

The HST could be justified - It seems there may be more enthusiasts than holiday-makers!

Actually it's been running since summer 2011 (via Nottingham). It's just this year that it happens to coincide with the blockade and is diverted.

Thanks for that upload Welshman. Annoyingly the next free Saturday I have is 31/8 so I think I'll be asking a favour when I go to work tomorrow!!

The return at 16:40 is that the same unit?

If so this could be the makings of a 'GRAND DAY OUT' (apologies to Wallace and Gromit there)

Don't forget to take a "nice bit of Wensleydale" with you. :D

For anyone wanting to bash the HST to Skeg, IIRC it's also working a return to Grantham and back (ex-SKG) during its break between Derby workings.

Yes it is - 1235 ex-Skegness, calling at Boston and Sleaford only, 1412 ex-Grantham, with same calling points.

It seems to have quite a bit of standing time at various points.

Are these purposely inserted photographic stops?

Probably because of the difficulties of the route.

On the outward journey, I imagine the 6 minutes at Peterborough is to allow the driver to change ends [obviously more time needed than for a 2xcar dmu].

Then the Grantham-Skegness stretch has some single-line sections. So the 7 minutes at Sleaford could be to allow the 0915 ex Skegness clear the section from Heckington, and the 6 minutes at Boston to allow the 1015 ex Skegness to clear the section over the Grand Sluice Bridge.

Is platform 4 at Grantham long enough?!

Would it not be more logical to give this train a 1Exx code?

No in the terms that you are thinking, as that is the interregional code for trains coming south down the ECML from Scotland, as this train isn't classed as interregional the regional code for going to/from Skegness which is S is used.

It is interregional - Midland to Eastern, and vice-versa on the return. 'S' is, I'm sure, only to be used for class 2 trains to Skegness.

It just means it's come from another region, not necessarily Scotland.

M = to London Midland
L = to Anglia
O = to Southern
S = to Scottish
V = to Western
E = to Eastern

It's been a bit diluted of late but by and large it still stands.
