Is there any reason why 387 172/173/174 have all the GWR logos and wording removed off them? Are they being sneaked off elsewhere on the quiet in a similar way the Castle's are quietly being axed.

Not quiet about this. The tender for EMUs for the Thames Valley from 1st April next year was for 30 sets, there are currently 33 sets so 3 will not be having their leases renewed as it stands.

Every bit of efficiency helps….

I think it was raised and discussed in the GWR HST reduction thread a week or two ago, they were supposed to be transferring a few to GTR.

They aren’t now going to GTR (funding issues) so are available for lease from Porterbrook should anyone wish to lease them.

Are they still going off-lease despite no longer going to GTR then? I must say I assumed it meant GWR would just keep them.

Seems crazy that we are losing so much stock and going back 10 years in the space of a few months. Not looking forward to the overcrowding and heavy delays all over again.

I have been told they are staying. I believe they were not going off lease anyway but were to be sub-leased to GTR.

How typical of the railways lol.
Typical of the DFT! They decided that GWR only needed 30 x 387s and that the 'spare' three units should go to GTR who needed them, only for them to later decide that GTR don't need them and they should stay with GWR. A lot of work & inspections were carried out in between those decisions that didn't need to have been.

Wasn’t the gwr order for 387 based off the idea that electrification will reach Oxford that’s why they have extra units?

That’s where the units for Heathrow Express came from.

The current surplus is due to post covid travel habit changes.

It was based on the idea that all of the Thames Valley would be electrified including the branch lines to Windsor, Henley etc.

Ridiculous that the say GTR dont need em. Southern could very much do with them

They can absolutely use them on any of their routes. As mentioned above, the GatEx units have some coastal work and these can be added to the rotation.

Funding that the Treasury and DfT could probably clear with the click of a finger:)

…If they wanted to.

If.

But we have to deal with the reality that we’ve gone from having several TOCs competing with each other for a finite number of units to a new world where the Government are a monopoly with no need to pay over the odds to lease anything* (the kind of new world that people used to argue for)

If you can operate the GWR services with thirty EMUs then why pay a ROSCO for ten percent, if that’s just a “nice to have”?

* - Similarly, the TOCs used to have to offer decent pay rises to stay competitive with each other (and stop their staff being poached), but now the Government has no need to push the boat out - be careful what you wish for

No, GWR aren’t withdrawing any 387s!

On instruction from the DfT 3x 387 (172/173/174) were to be leaving and sent elsewhere. This is no longer happening.
This along with the shambolic IET programme shows why our government should not be let anywhere near transport whether its railways or airports. They have a habit of leaving it in more of a mess than it started in.

Update on unbranded 387172, 173 & 174, these will now be leaving GWR next year on or around the 1st April. No idea where to!

Getting to be more of an on-again, off-again relationship than those in certain TV programmes! Interesting that they are on the move though!

They are going off lease as surplus to requirements. No takers as yet I don’t believe.

How come they're going off lease? Passengers are bound to ask (if using a 387 route) regularly about 4 coaches at peak times or 8 coaches instead of 12? Also what if there's disruption on the IET routes? What if a 12-car 387 is needed to run a service?
