My interest in cricket began with the Old Trafford test of 1956 when Jim Laker took 19 Australian wickets, and apparently Broad's 8 - 15 were the best Ashes figures by an Englishman other than those figures of Laker's.

Great to see Bairstow getting runs for England again too, but Lyth remains a problem.

The Australian High Commissioner was interviewed on The World Tonight on Radio 4 and said he had tickets for Sunday's play! He did enter the spirit of things and say he was sure there were plenty more things to do in Nottingham though.

I just feel Lyth got a rare good ball, if he got out like Bairstow did the media would of rounded up on him, but if you get a good ball and get out, all you can say is unlucky, and move on.

Not aggressive enough? What is Clarke smoking? That ball was moving all over the place. It's not the time to be trying to hit the ball into the car park! What is needed was batsmen to be patient and put the bad stuff away.

Clarke's a lame duck and needs putting out of our misery. It isn't Twenty20, it isn't about putting the ball in the car park, it's about settling down for 80-100 overs and keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

How to sum up Australia yesterday.

I think Boycott had it right about the need to be patient and leave the ball alone unless you had to play it. The Aussies were a bit too keen to try and play their shots yesterday morning, while the ball was moving around a little they should have been a bit more defensive minded.

It's a five day Test match, not a 20 over slog fest.

T20 has got batsmen into this silly mindset. There is a time and a place for it in test cricket. Just not day one with a swinging ball.

I am waiting someone to play a ramp shot in test cricket to be honest.

Good decision in my view. Give the Aussies a couple of overs before the lunch break. the few extra runs that Finn and Broad may have made are worth sacrificing in the circumstances.

I was surprised he did it. Normally English captains are rather conservative and put up a flashing neon sign to tell everyone they going to declare.

If anyone was worried they should of waited. Our batting order is more than happy to hand out the wickets.

It looks like Clarke will be the first victim of our loss. Apprantly selectors have told him he has no place in the side.

Ricky Ponting is saying that no fewer than eight of the current side may never play test cricket again, which seems a bit extreme to me. Clarke and Rogers we know about, to which can surely be added Voges, Watson and Haddin, but beyond that? Shaun Marsh with 8 ducks in 28 test innings, maybe.

I hope England test some new players out at the Oval viz Hales, Footitt and Rashid, the latter hitting a century today in a low-scoring match. Anderson shouldn't be risked!

Viewed player by player, only Root of the batsmen can be said to have had an excellent series, and most of them only moderate to good. It's our bowlers that have made all the difference, with Anderson, Broad and Finn outstanding and Stokes v.g. overall. I do hope England don't come a huge cropper back in London.

In the tour match, Northants were 212-6 at one stage against Australia, then Crook came in at number 7 and proceeded to make hay whilst the sun shone, scoring 142 not out from only 96 balls with 4 x 6 and 24 x 4. Northants eventually all out, but not before posting a score of 396.

Same team as Trent Bridge for me. I would rather make sure that Anderson is fully fit rather than rush him back to the front-line.

I'd like to see Rashid given a go. Either instead of or as well as Moeen Ali. There will be times in the winter we need two spinners, so unless it's another green seamer I'd play two spinners - but I can see them going unchanged.

Definitely wouldn't risk Anderson.
