It’s hard to judge in a pummelling that England received but I thought he did well. He tired a lot towards the end but he had bowled over 40 overs in very hot heat and Mooen wasn’t too much better. I think he needs to be playing though rather than carrying drinks so if he’s not
Going to play in NZ he should go with the Lions on tour. I think giving him some one day games would be a good idea too as that is where he has most impressed me for Hants

I feel bad for Vince. He’s a bit out of position at 3, having to face the new ball so much. Lovely strokemaking, some very silly out shots and some bad luck. Changing one position so much is not helping anyone, they need to pick someone and stick by them soon. Dropping after one series so often puts so much pressure on them.

Doesn't he play at 3 for Hants though? I don't know how many more chances you think he should get: since that 83 in Brisbane, a total of 159 runs in eight innings, so averaging less than 20, and this series was already his second chance. I really don't think he should go to NZ.

He bats at 4 for us usually, im not saying he should go to NZ and I don’t think he will but England will need to pick someone to bat at 3 soon and stick with them. People have suggested Malan but then you are taking him out of his comfort zone too as he has done well at 5.

Rightly he's not come back on for the 2nd session. Looked absloutly shot coming off.

Apprantly it was gastro. He wouldn't of had a fun night/morning. Throw in the heat you can see why he was sent to hospital.

Just looked up the England 2017 Ashes bowling averages chart. I see that Anderson tops the list, with most wickets, the only 5 wicket innings haul, the most economical return and the only average of under 30 runs per wicket.

As an aside i have just finished a really interesting book about the infamous Bodyline Ashes tour of 1932–33.

I have to say I have a strange respect for Douglas Jardine. He comes across as a hard, stubborn, determined, arrogant, aloof & driven captain determined to crush (not just beat) the Aussies and humiliate Bradman. He seems to have had an Australian attitude to victory before the Australians!

Bodyline Autopsy: The Full Story of the Most Sensational Test Cricket Series - Australia V England 1932-33 by David Frith. It is dry but offers a great level of detail. There is an slight Aussie bias ( or perhaps a bias towards the spirit of cricket) and a hint of dislike towards Jardine. It is from the early 2000's so isn't new.

I also have a biography of Harold Larwood by Duncan Hamilton that was good reading. It won William Hill Sports Book of the Year in 2009. Bodyline Hypocrisy and Jardine, Spartan Cricketer are also worth looking out.

Ah, thanks; I've got that one, and I agree, it is a very good book - one of the best on the subject by one of the best cricket writers around.

The Harold Larwood book by Duncan Hamilton is also very good, and he's also a very good writer on a number of sports (his book about Brian Clough is excellent). I think that I may have read Bodyline Hypocrisy but I haven't read Jardine, Spartan Cricketer - I'll have to check them both.

Northeast should be playing for England imo: it's unfortunate that he'll have to move to a First Division county in order to stand any chance. James Vince, incidentally, has a batting average over 50 in the Second Division but only just over 30 in the First Division. If you're a teacher's pet, though, such matters are not considered!

I can't get too exercised about Stokes being cleared to play (assuming his case doesn't get listed in the interim) but I do think it's indicative of the low status currently enjoyed by England's test team: if we'd won the Ashes I've a feeling Stokes would have been excluded!
