Have many stations experienced an entire renumbering of their platforms at some point? When I was still at school, Helensburgh Central had four platforms. Some years later, the rarely used Platform 1 was abolished and the original Platforms 2, 3 and 4 were renumbered 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

Think Bristol TM did - presumably when the platforms in the original trainshed were abandoned.

Platform renumbering is quite common when stations are resignalled and the layout remodelled.

Liverpool Lime St HL went from 1-9 to 1-10 recently (with the old P1 eliminated).
Crewe and Chester were comprehensively renumbered during resignalling and remodelling in the mid-80s.
At Crewe the renumbering went from east to west, the reverse of the former numbering pattern.
Some stations like Chester had separate numbers for half-platforms, but then went to single numbers with "a" and "b" ends.

Reading is another station that was comprehensively renumbered during its reconstruction.

York I'm fairly sure has had the platforms completely renumbered when most of the bays were taken out.

York platforms were renumbered, though not completely - some remained the same, in 1894, 1938 and 1989. Some of today`s numbers are the same as 1894 having been different between 1938 and 1989.

Lincoln was renumbered when itcwas resignalled a few years back. 1 and 2 eliminated many years ago, so all remaining numbers reduced by two.

Kings Criss was renumbered in the 1970s, the missing nos 2 and 9 being made up for so 10 became 8.

Leeds went through a renumbering in 1967 when Central closed at the Wellington platforms were turned over to parcels. Platforms 1-6 were taken out of passenger use, a new P1 was built (currently P4), P7 became P2, etc.

Kings Cross got renumbered in the opposite direction at one point; P1 used to be on the west, up to P8 on the east.

Newcastle Central when the new island was built and several bays were removed. Old P1-3 had already gone when the Metro replaced trains to the coast, and then we had:

4, 5 & 6 -> closed
7 -> 1
8 -> 2
9 -> 3
10 -> 4
New island 5, 6, 7 & 8
11 -> 9
12 -> 10
13 -> 11
14 -> 12 (now closed)

Preston has. All the current platforms used to be +2, e.g. P1 was P3, P2 was P4, etc. I think it was done during the 1970s rationalisation.

Brough will have done as well as it used to be 2 island platforms.

Shipley (current 1 and 2 both being 50 years old or less!).
London Bridge (two rebuilds in 50 years)
Bromley S (numbering reversed in 1959 to match Shortlands - not sure about Bickley).
Clapham Jn, early grouping era.
Victoria, similar period.

Newton Abbot. There were scissor crossovers halfway down the platforms splitting them in two. So P1/2 became P1, P3/4 became P2 etc.
The old Moretonhampstead bay is still referred to as platform 9.

Clapham Jn, early grouping era.

Clapham Junction was very odd, because in the early days both comapnies numbered platforms, not faces. (Platform 6 being the shared one). By 1920 the LBSCR had numbered the separate faces (7-12) but the LSWR continued to number plaforms (1-6). It was only in 1947 that the SW side finally numbered individual faces (1-11), which also resulted in the Brighton's platforms having to be renumbered (12-17)

Fareham had a renumbering at the same time as electrification. P1 was a closed bay on the down (car park) side, with P2-4 the in use platforms counting across to the west. The up through platform changed from P4 to P1, the in use bay from P3 to P2, and the down through changed from P2 to P3. Hence this was a reversal of the historic LSWR usage where P1 was usually on the side of the main or only entrance.

(There has been a previous thread asking why some former LSWR stations have P1 on the down side, it being assumed P1 is usually the London bound platform.)

Bristol Temple Meads and Crewe have both had their platform numbers flipped.

Current platform 15 at Bristol used to be platform 1, while the current platform 1 was old platform 12.

At Crewe the current platform 12 used to be 2, current platform 1 was 6. The bay platforms were once numbered Bay 1-Bay 6 at the south end, later 1A-6A (oddly the diagram I've got has a 2B sticking out like a sore thumb), bays 3-6 are now 8, 7, 4 & 2 in that order - I'm not sure if current platform 3 was a proper platform at the time. At the north end you had Bay 7 - Bay 10, later 1A-4A (which seems to confusingly duplicate those at the south), of which survive Bay 9/3A (now platform 10) and Bay 10/4A (now platform 9).

Llandudno Junction likewise used to have the through platforms allocated substantive numbers, and the bays subsidiary to them. Platform 2 used to be 1A, the other three now-disused bay platforms being numbered in a similar fashion. Current platform 3 was 2, 4 was 3, and the disused through platform was 4.

Stalybridge platform numbers were flipped in 2012, when a third through platform plus a bay platform on the north side were built.

Sunderland would have been renumbered in the early 2000s to accommodate the T&W Metro platforms.

That's not quite right for Crewe immediately before the current numbering

The north facing bays were 1A to 4A

1A & 2A are gone, 3A is now 10 and 4A is now 9

The south facing bays were 1B to 6B

1B & 2B are gone, 3B is now 8, 4B is now 7, 5B is now 4 & 6B is now 3

Of the through platforms, 1 is gone, 2 is now 12, 3 is now 11, 4 is now 6, 5 is still 5 (the only one unchanged!) & 6 is now 1

The current platform 2 did not exist before

[I spent a lot of time at Crewe station in the mid 1970s when attending training courses there]

Hull Paragon was completely renumbered in the 1980s, if you take the number of the current platform away from 11, thats what the old number was

From what I remember in the early 80's I recall Bletchley was numbered platforms 3 to 8 which at some point were renumbered 1 to 6 - I'm not sure when it exactly happened

Edinburgh Waverley?
The East end plus the sub changed during the remodelling around 2007, that's true.

1 became 2
Parcels siding became 3
7 became 4
Motorail sidings became 5 & 6
10 became 7
West end of South loop became 10
North loop became 20
North loop siding became 1
20 became 9
21 became 8

So yeah, that's quite a fair bit actually!

The Brunel trainshed platform numbers were the highest in the station, so not an issue when they were let go.

Taunton was completely renumbered, sort of on the same pattern but eliminating a few redundant bays, so 1 to 9 became 1 to 6, in the same down-to-up sequence. It hardly seemed worth it.

It's not just a case of new signs; signalling can be associated with numbers, such as theatre-style indicators showing which route is set. Things like telephones all have to be relabelled, it's a lot of work.

Finsbury Park all renumbered when the up side island was brought back into use.

Welwyn Garden City and Hitchin both renumbered in the Network SouthEast era.

Peterborough had a partial renumbering about 10 years ago: the old platform 1 was removed and a new platform 3 was built, so the old platforms 2 and 3 became platforms 1 and 2.
