Surely a dynamometer car would still require a steep bit of railway to record the results for it's performance up a hill? I would hazard a guess that modern telemetry can be fitted to the units without needing a dedicated vehicle that the fragmented railway doesn't really have a good place for.
Modern traction control systems can measure/log tractive effort, power, speed and probably pretty much anything else you might want to know about how a loco is performing. so I doubt you need anything else.

If you wanted a variable test load, hauling a loco or two with decent capacity dynamic/rheostatic braking that can be used independently (i.e. not linked with the train or loco friction brake systems) could provide it. I don't know if any UK locos can do that (class 70s maybe - anyone know?).

70, 88, 90 or 91 would be suitable. The resistors aren't that big (volume constrained) so you would need a few trailing locos to do this.

Agreed nothing else needed.
what about drawbar pull? all of the above are very fine, but take no account of adhesion! The whole point of a dynomometer is that it measures the pull, which is otherwise missed completely.

First info we've had about one of the locomotives being named, to my knowledge. ROG have announced on LinkedIn that "the very first type 93 train", so presumably 93001, will be named "The Armed Forces Covenant" at Shildon on 23/09/25. This looks to be taking place as part of Locomotion's "Next generation line up" event.

AIUI one of the ROG seniors is very active in the Royal Navy training regime, so it is no surprise.

Looking at the schedule it appeared to manage the load without issue.

Many thanks. I’m no expert but my first reaction is that it was an impressive performance.
That is 22x 90 tonne wagons so 1980 tonnes of wagon + the dead loco so about 2065 trailing in total.
A 93 should be able to do this so confirmation of expected performance.

There are pages and pages upthread of enthusiasts confidently opining that it won't pull the skin off a rice pudding! 50mph up Shap hauling 2100t. It must have grown some extra axles!

Yes. 2065+86t on a 1.31% gradient is a Tractive Effort of 276kN, plus rolling friction (~21kN) and wind resistance (depends on speed). That's just within spec. If it maintained 50mph up the steepest gradient, with the wind resistance that implies, that would be very impressive.

It would be interesting to see how it performs in winter under different conditions of adhesion.

They moved onto ‘They don’t have any work for them’ instead.
Some of us have made no judgement about their capabilities but have consistently said they have no work for them, and so far (more than 2 years after their delivery) have been proved right. I also have no doubt we will continue to be proved right.
