Right, you heard it hear first! The nickname for these beauties will be "Plugs". They're plug ugly and that triangle of headlight/horn enclosure plus the two marker light clusters make them look just like a three pin plug. Freaky. Not in a good way.

Oh, I like that! :D Plugs they shall be!

Suits them better than 'predators'. Which, in my opinion, is not sufficiently critical of the design.

Whether you like it or not, it's nice to see a class of loco with a bit of character back on the rails....

Well you reckon wrong - it would have taken two minutes to check ;)

Well when you look the class 70 only has 490 more bhp. But only has a topspeed of 75mph compared to 125mph of a class 67.

Exactly

A similar analogy is phone cameras - my old phone (SE K800) takes better photos then a lot of the newer 8 megapixel ones - as megapixels is only part of the equation, the CCD size, lens and processing all contribute to making a good picture.

So with a locomotive gearing, tractive effort and weight affect things. A 66 has roughly the same HP has a 59 and is faster (75mph vs 60mph) but can a 66 pull a Jumbotrain?

Class 67's used to/and still are used for more light freight workings anyway, mostly passenger now! very rare you will see one hauling some goods!

Certainly are...With Wrexham being DBS's main custemer, then youve got FGW & First Scotrail, And on top of that theres the Rail Tours & Rug Ex's:D, theres not much left that isnt doing anything nowadays...and to Find a 67 back on any freight duty's becomming rarer...

i remember last year a 67 working the Eastleigh to Hoo Junc engineeers working...and of course they have worked the Sandite trains...though this year thatll be in the hands of the 37's...Tis the reason why DBS re-instated them afterall...just as DRS has done with the 3 class 20's...

going back to the FUGLY/PLUG...noticed this weeks rather empty railway herald has the 2 of them on the cover...side by side...and YES, they really are even more uglier along the side...

The front end is an abomination, mainly due to the two warts, but it looks pretty impressive side on, IMHO

If the front end didn't have those bulbous protrusions they'd look alright.

And no, they look hideous in Freightliner livery. They'd look significantly better in DB traffic red.

Surely, it's more about the way the power is converted to tractive effort that indicates how good a loco is for heavy freight. The Class 67 is a Bo-Bo because it's designed for high speed passenger / light load work. I seem to remember that they were originally intended for mail traffic, which is more about volume than weight.

The Class 66 has less engine power than the 67 (or a Class 91 for that matter), but it has a clever traction control system, which means the power is used efficiently, minimising wheel slip by applying the power gradually, no matter how heavy-handed the driver is (no disrespect to those drivers amongst you). This, together with lower ratio gearing mean that the 66 is suited to heavy haul, within the constraints of the UK loading gauge.

That said, freight operators would like a loco that has more grunt than a 66, which is what GE are trying to achieve. CSRE is also offering a freight loco called Potenta, which will deliver 4000 hp, using two smaller engines rather than one large one, hopefully enabling operators to haul longer trains without double heading. This will have the advantage of saving fuel when idling or hauling empties, by dropping off one engine when more than 2000 hp is not required. GPS monitoring, together with line of route data will ensure that if a steep gradient is ahead, the second engine is automatically started to provide extra power when required.

The intention of Freightliner is to replace the double headed 86s services with these though I dont reckon these will get up a hill as well....

They have no choice, the future increase in LO services on the NLL is bumping off some of the freight. Felixstowe containers will be going via Peterborough. 86's don't work where there are no wires....

Good point..But dosent this then create the idea of electrifying Norwich-Peterborough?

And if Crossrail does ever unfortunatly get built, then personnaly i think it should be to the original BR plan, and to inlcude freight through it as LOL are bumping everything else off the NLL...

I'm glad I'm not a Freightliner driver, these things look bloody uncomfortable to drive!

To quote the comment on Twitpic (before it inevitably get's deleted):
after the US Canada and Australia abandoned desktop controls.....we adopt them!! proven to be more ergonomically stressful for the driversupper body and arms as opposed to side mounted control stands!
Here's the cab: http://twitpic.com/ikg8d

There's also a comment about the window:
oh! and isnt the sliding side window arrangement the wrong way around? how does the driver see out of the window without standing up and bending around the control desk??

I've got to say, I'm in the minority that thinks the Class 70 looks cool.

The cab interior looks very clunky. Seems to be more of an agglomeration of components rather than something that has been designed.
I wonder if they have managed to fit cab air-con or is that still too much to ask for in the 21st century?

I have it on good authority that Freightliner are not the only company interested in the Class 70.
