Perhaps Im not suffiently well-read in the railway press, but coould someone enlighten me as the purpose of the extending lighting modules on the Class 70 at the front (or rear!).

The protrusions will adsorb a lot of energy in a collision thus (in theory) protecting the cab and driver.
