I have read that the first of the 30 will be delivered to Newport in November with the rest to be delivered in 2010 so how come i and many other people have heard nothing of the class.

Because you are not as up to date and knowledgeable as you think you are?

lks like a prop from 'ghosts of mars'

Actually, when I think about it, this looks like something which would work down/around a pit.

I'm not trying to coming across as immodest and full of myself it's just normally something like this would be in a railway related magazine for example the ones i read Railways Illustrated or Modern Railways. It seems myself and some other members were unaware of the building of this type of locomotive.

I'm sorry but i was just asking an innocent and simple question and i didn't expect to get a rude and impolite response. I didn't even word the question as if i thought i "knew it all".

This loco has been common knowledge for about 12 months. It has certainly been in the news and electronic magazines, no idea about paper ones though I suspect it was at some point. Having just read the article, The Railway Magazine is given as a source of information.

Some more information and artists impression here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_70_(Powerhaul)

That artists impression has also been around for at least 12 months too - and looks scarily like the end product.

Seriously on this forum get used to the rudeness I have any way I'll give you the polite version to your question.

Basically these locomotives have been bought by Freightliner who have chosen to keep major technical details quiet and also the company responsible for building the locomotives have decided to keep quite as this design could easily be copied by it's competitors as this class 70 designs is supposed to rival the 66's and what not.

And before anyone out there asks whats the point we have enough 66's well eurpoe doesnt and thats what GE are targeting at the moment.

But honestly I wouldn't be surprised now If every week we get more and more news now that two locomotives are fully built.

But this could all be speculation on my part but at the moment it's to the best of my knowledge.

Out of interest- why 70? Why not 61, 62, 62, 64, 65, 68 or 69? Or have they decided to rip up the rules on class numbering? After all, though they were never numbered up, there's been a Class 70 before (3rd rail DC locos).

Apparently because any class other than 70 conflicts with DMU/EMU coach numbers yes It's stupid but apparently true.

Yeah there have just completed an order for egypt and being GM are seeking new buyers. like I said it's not 100% established truth it's my opinion based upon the majority of articles etc so don't take it for 100% truth.

EMD have been losing market share to GE in recent years in the US. Europe was uncontested by GE so this is clearly an attempt to tap into a large market they were not previously in. For many years GE locomotives were derided for their poor reliabilty all their older models were scrapped early whilst EMD units from the 50s are still running around happily. However in recent years the GE evolution (GEVO) series have been leading the way they are very reliable so you can expect good things plus the american versions at least are comfortable for the drivers. Some competition in the otherwise EMD dominated market might help them improve too.The Esc4400ac is an impressive beast up close.

I was looking in "The Railway Magazine" Southern special issue from last year and there was already locos designated Class 70 I dont know if there in preservation now (not likely) but they were withdrawn in the late seventies i dont know if this will affect these locos that are on order for freightliner though.

Although there are two types of Class 43s one is the HST and the other is a diesal hydraulic like a "Warship" or somthing.

First we had the V250 (Vira) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ansaldo_Breda_V250.JPG
And now we have an even more ugly Class 70.

They're nothing on the Talgo 350.

I thought HST's were officially class 253/254? At least thats what it says on my traction competancy.

They are.

The numbers are coaching stock TOPS codes, the whole train is in the 4XXXX number range. They use them rather than the 253/4 codes because of the semi-fixed formation, so the 253/4 codes would be different at each end of the train if the DMBs were changed, which they often are.

We doing Ugly?
Mindyou, I'm sure no-one would complain too loudly about aesthetics if we had 150mph double decker services on the mainlines.

I thought 4XXX series ment Southern Region DC only?

Im guessing its a V12, my mate reckons it sounds abit like a 12VP185 and that growl is like the growl you get off a Paxman YJ3/RP200
