Aren't the morning and evening train the same diagram though? I thought it just sat at Clapham all day after the morning run.

Diagrams can be changed though? Perhaps the few units still around are down to limited mileage remaining prior to C4 overhaul, but they've worked out they can do a part diagram for a few weeks?

I see the 0724 from Reading is being reinstated from next week, seven weeks earlier than previously stated. Unsurprising considering the mayhem it's been causing.
What sort mayhem has been caused?

If they are having to short form other services instead, I wonder what the best services to short form might be. Not an easy choice to make I imagine.

It would be good if they could re instate the 17:05 too as the 17:20 has been leaving people behind at Clapham, Richmond and Twickenham on the days I have used it. Full and standing at least as far as Staines.
Looking at the timetable there is a 17.07; 17.15; 17.27 and 17.31 which all stop at the three stations. Surely passengers can board one of those or are they also very packed and leaving passengers behind?

If they need to get to Reading or another station not served by the above trains they could change on route when it might be less busy.

Perhaps Reading line passengers are not use to getting slower services or changing trains on route. Passengers on the other South West Trains mainline side have been use to it for years if needing to travel south of Guildford or Woking from Clapham Junction.

It's only for a short time in the grand scheme of things.

This morning I missed my Shepperton train to Fulwell by less than a minute at 0751. I went to platform 5/6 for a train to Twickenham to catch a bus down. There are always so many people wanting to catch the 0758 to Reading, that I would have certainly had to stand. If I waited for the 0808 Windsor, I should get a seat, but I caught the 0755 stopper, had a double seat all the way, not crushed in and was 5 mins ahead of the Windsor train. There are probably at least 20 people for the front door of the 0758 train at Clapham Junction on weekdays. There were only 5 of us who boarded the front of the stopper (which was a pair of 458/5s, the Reading being a pair of 450s).

Same time a notice was re-issued about 458-5 permitted between Virginia water and Reading......

How dare you suggest the self-important idiots of Twickenham, Richmond etc use a stopper?! . But seriously, it is this sort of behaviour that really annoys me, wedging themselves onto a faster train to save 5 minutes.
The 0723 stopper from Putney to Waterloo (10 cars) arrives 3-5 minutes after a semi-fast, but it is very civilised in the leading coach after Clapham Junction, let alone towards the rear, yet you get people squashing onto the wedged 8 car from Reading.

Pedantic time: There is a 1701 stopper and a 1713 semi-fast, but the 1707 pair of 455s is Hounslow via Brentford! ;)

You will see from my post that I was referring to the morning service. I also assume you have no awareness the capacity issues in the AM peak at the west end of the Reading line. Removing the 0724 has meant people unable to board the 0712 at Bracknell, creating an hour's gap in the AM peak service from Bracknell and Martins Heron. I would also be interested to know where these faster services that we could catch instead might be.

In case you're still not convinced how busy the services are, SWT are introducing additional peak Reading line services soon.

I worked the 0812 once when the train was short a formed 458/0.It's amazing the amount of people who blame the driver when this happens.I didn't actually know why it was short formed but heard after that it was because they couldn't get the computer(s) to sync on coupling up.

It's good to be pedantic. Fair enough about the 17.07. I was using the live departure board feature on the National Rail Enquiries App and thought I'd captured all those that take a different route, E. G. Like the ones that go via Kingston first but I missed that one.

Wonder if that means the 0724 will be a single 458/5 from Monday. Neat temporary solution if so.

Unfortunately not. I've just had a look at the diagram and it's booked 450.

The damaged car went initially to Brush after the incident then moved on to Doncaster, does it need more attention then?

Did anything actually come south on the 22nd? Given the translators and 47830 were still at Wimbledon and no Colas 47s were available?

There was significant damage to main structural members in the vicinity of the shoe cable junction box. There are pictures in the recent RAIB report, and I think the repairs would need quite specialist skills.

It is likely that a different 'works' might be better prepared or experienced to do this sort of repair.

The fire occurred because a joint between three power cables, located under the floor of the sixth carriage, had not been secured correctly when the carriage was reassembled after being rebuilt and refurbished in 2014. Electrical arcing had developed at the loose joint, and this damaged the ends of the cables and eventually led to the arcing which badly damaged the structure of the train. This in turn caused a fire that penetrated the floor.

The arcing burnt a hole about 300 mm by 100 mm through the outer skin of the vehicle, and destroyed longitudinal and lateral steel structural members in the vicinity of the junction box, compromising the strength of the vehicle body structure in this area. Figure 9 shows the extent of the damage, looking from above. The mineral wool and glass bre insulation material between the outer skin and the oor was destroyed. The floor itself was affected over an area about 500 mm in diameter, with its lower skin (of aluminium) melted away, and the plywood core heavily charred and penetrated in one area.

I'm possibly going to be in the Reading area at 1155 tomorrow (2nd November), will I find any 458/0s around on the 1209 or 1239 to Waterloo?

I don't mind if it's 450s, 455s or 458/5s, heck 456s would also be fine, but I'd like to have a /0 if possible!
