Inserting an extra trailer vehicle and a lick of new paint is hardly murder. Like it, hate it or whatever this was the only plausible solution to 10 Car trains on the Windsor lines at the time without shelling out for brand new stock.

Suppose so. They were my favorite trains though.

I saw one passing Southampton today at about 15:15, i couldn't make out the windows very well but there didn't seem to be any noticeable difference, is the centre carriage the 460 one?

No, that one is entirely made of 460 carriages.

The unit you saw is all ex-460 vehicles, you wouldn't expect any difference...

No 458s have left for conversion yet, and none will until a couple of 460 derived units are available for passenger service.

Yes, if you looked through the thread there are pictures of the cab before and after it was fitted.

Have they replaced the seats, or just reupholstered the 460 ones? (Picture on wikipedia for anyone who doesn't know what the 460 interiors looked like).

I know the 458/5s will all have 2x2 seating, but that doesn't necessarily mean they won't keep the existing 458 seats and remove the spare seats?

On the videos the seats were in their protective bags so it's hard to tell. I guess they could always use some of the spare seats from the 450/5s?

Doesn't the first unit completed, 458534, use 5 standard class vehicles which already had 2+2 seating throughout? Taken from a couple of broken up 460 formations. It doesn't create much of a precedent for what they may or may not do once they run out of 460 standard class vehicles and start using converted 'firsts', and gives little or no indication of what they'll do once they start on a proper 458 conversion, which won't be for a while yet, cos none have left yet...

It's perfectly feasible that the seating style won't be standardised across the class - we could end up with a few sets with arms ex 460, but the majority without them...

Surely that's alright because it'll be like southern and the 2+2 seats on 377's (first come, first serve)

Not much like a 377 really. What I'm suggesting is that some units might have 100% 2+2 seating with armrests ex 460s. Then some may have 100% 2+2 without armrests ex 458s, and some may be a mixture...

I won't be letting a train go without me based on the presence of armrests or not, and I don't think anyone else will either...

The plan is to keep the current 458 seats in 2+2 configuration.

The 460 seat shells are identical to the on the 458s. The differences are armrests and the entire shell is raked back more on the 460s. All the seats were removed the refurb so I would be surprised if both differences weren't addressed prior to refitting.

That sounds about right, as the seats look different to what they looked like as a 460.
Looking at the most recent photo, The 460's look good in the new livery but I'm not sure about the 458's with the different doors and windows.

The 458s should look pretty smart in the new livery, they are in a dire need of a new coat of paint. It's hard to believe that 8001/8002 will be 17 years old next year.
