Does anyone know if these units are in service yet? If not, why? They can't still be busy on staff training!

504 is confined to clapped out yard shed crew training...Pretty sure I saw 503 in Wim Yd.I know of a driver who has been called up in March for training almost a year after I learnt them.Check Post #1988 Pg133

I was on the 7:38 from Staines this morning (ex Windsor), which is usually 2 x 458/5s, but was only one (extremely busy!) unit, 458520 I think.

Anybody know why this was short formed? Would that normally have been the unit that's got a hole in the floor?

Likewise, this is my usual train. Glad it is half term this week or I would have been unable to board at Feltham.

This capacity increase from 8 coaches to 5 isn't really doing it for me at the moment

I got the 0659 Hounslow to Waterloo today, which was the usual 10 coaches :D. Front unit was 458533, didn't see the rear. When I last used it, about 5-6 weeks ago, a single unit turned up which got wedged, but today's 10 car had a fair amount of standing space available at Wandsworth Town. As usual I saw people at Putney and Clapham Junction trying to save 3 minutes by getting on the wedged 0612 Reading to London Waterloo pair of Desiros (6 minutes if it was on time, but it wasn't).

458536+458532 were on the 0745 Waterloo to Hounslow.

Ditto. Anything less than 8 on this service isn't pleasant, and makes the following extra peak service 10 minutes later pretty unpleasant too.

Now I'm on the 1737 Waterloo to Hounslow, which is the same set I got this morning  (the inter-peak stabler one). 458533+458502 are the units. However, this morning it was 458533 DMSO 67916 on the outer end, and now it is the other one 67917, so the consist has changed at some point.

Other observations:
At stations, Virginia Water towards Weybridge is announced as Front 5 coaches.
DMSO 67905 (I think) of 458532: For at least 2-3 months the sliding inter-car door has not been working, nor has the LED screen near the outer end vestibule.
Syon Lane had a notice showing what distance from the end of the platform to install the ASDO beacon.
Inner end bogie of DMSO 67916 in 458533: Intermittent loud high pitched sound when stopped :?.

Conked out somewhere along its way into Waterloo last night. Door(s) on coach C were malfunctioning. Eventually made it at 2115. Operated a very delayed 2107 to Houslow but all doors to coach C had to be locked off for the journey.

It seems not one of these units is managing to make it through a week without a problem.

I wonder if SWT might add more units to their order for Desiro Cities to replace the 458s (if they did that would it make sense for them to all add enough units to the order to replace the 455s and 456s?)

Given it a couple of years. Once they're all delivered and bedded in, it will probably depend if reliability improves in the same way it did originally with the 458s. (Also on ££££)

Can't see it with the 458/5s potentially having another 25 years in service.

Replacing the 455s and 456s will also be covered by the completely new stock for Crossrail 2 if it happens when expected. That fits in well with the probable remaining life of the 455s following the latest DDA mods and retractioning. (anyone might think that has been the plan all along!)

So replacing the 455s will be out of the future SW franchisee's hands, in a similar way to how Crossrail 1 and LO transfer of some routes impacted on the Anglia franchise future rolling stock plans. Replacing their 315s, has basically fallen off the agenda and became TfL's issue.

In the "TOPS Request" thread, I asked about the rear unit of my Monday's train 0659 Hounslow to Waterloo, and it was reported as 458503 (with 458533). Therefore, assuming the info entered in is correct, it has entered service. Even if when the diagram continued in the evening peak it had been swapped with 458502, coupled to the other end of 458533.

Grrr. Got 458532+458536 again  (1737 Waterloo to Hounslow). This time DMSO 67904 is leading, and has a very squeaky inner bogie which makes the noise even with the tiniest movement. At least 67905 with the broken inter-car door didn't have that problem. Should have chosen the sixth coach and a DMSO of 458536, would have had no problem getting my favourite seat as it arrived in front of me :(

As we approach May we approach the month in which the new hybrid Class 458 units are delivered and enter service. I'd imagine that Mays issue of modern railways will have some images of them and with articles like this surely it won't be long until we see the finished product compete with its 450 style front end?

Nearly 2 years later....

Thought it would be useful to post an update to the diagrams, appears to be 8 458/5s diagrammed in use everyday now. These are correct to the best of my knowledge but have only been compiled based on my own observations plus RTT, so I can't guarantee they are correct.

1615 Hounslow(10 Car) Wednesday and everytime I have worked it recently.
Forming 1752 Weybridge on return...I think your list covers it.

Had 536 (as usual) as a 5 car then 532 I think it was joined a bit later.:p

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I'm sure the powers that be would have a different answer now. Given time and a lot of facepalming, they will be great trains again.

You've got to remember the work is highly invasive to the door and electrical systems, the corrosion to the 460's, the ASDO infrastructure, the drivers stopping in the right place for the ASDO, the software changes, new couplers added weight and a myriad of different people involved makes for perhaps not such a simple task.

You've got to remember the 458/0 average 200,000 miles average per casualty. That's light years ahead of many others. Electrostar c 50k, 395 c 45k

They don't become 'bad' without a lot of mitigating factors.

What's the current estimate for when all the conversions will be complete and all the units in service?

btw are they cleared for the SWML down to Weymouth? They must be cleared down at least as far as Poole because that rail tour goes down as far as Poole (or would the new ones be treated as a new class for the purpose of route clearance?)

The diagrams look right :). I have noticed the cheeky split before the evening peak and then getting them dispatched out into the country, in order to miss the peak :D. Saw it the other day when nosing about on RTT and thought "surely that can't be correct?" :P

The last two diagrams are odd. I can't imagine they're thr busiest services in the morning peak, the units are going round the Hounslow Loop for the busiest period of the peak. Then, as you say, they split and miss the evening peak almost entirely.

Given how terrible they have been so far splitting/ joining them at Waterloo is madness in my opinion.

Is that the 1402 split which is still shown as a desiro on the traincrews diagram?

Somehow I've managed with no problems.

The original introduction of the 458/0s maybe? Back in 2005/6 or so, it was taken as read that they were going back to the ROSCO, probably to be scrapped.

Yes of course, I can remember that. It's really strange how it took so long to get them running normally, and then they are the mostreliable trains in Britain not too long after

And of course we must not forget, whenever we think things are going bad with the 459's, spare a thought for the Netherlands and Belgium and their Fyra train service.
