They would probably have to use shortened sets on the preserved railways. Maybe a Grand Central style 2+5 would be the longest, bearing in mind that the mk3s are considerably longer than the preservation standard mk1s. They would all have to be fitted with buffers as well because it is unlikely that a preserved railway would have a spair thunderbird or coupler transformer.

Actually, that's a good point: the GC HSTs are already in 2+5, they've got buffers, and they're still running with Valentas (and low-density, window-aligned IC70 seating). So they'd be good preservation candidates I guess...?

Why does it matter they're already in 2 + 5?! It's not hard to form sets of 5 coaches. EMT have IC70s as well. In regards to buffers, if you're on about the coaches they don't and if you're on about the PCs it doesn't make a difference. All pres lines have to have thunderbirds in case of failures, HST or not. It isn't hard to couple a HST to a Loco. Just use the drawbar in the front compo under the lights.

as fgw havw done many times with their 57's, i'm going to predict that the first set preserved is in 2015, after IEP introduction and extra electrification...

Im pretty sure a Mk3 Buckeye can be dropped, Actually im pretty certain it can be, other wise shunting would be a problem, The only difference between the Loco hauled and the HST version is the Power. Plus if you had a 2+5 set why would you need to break up the set? There would be no point.
