Class 395s and HS1

Are you sure about that? I'm pretty sure 3rd rail lines cannot handle 125mph trains, and the limit there is 100mph.

This seems to be a myth that comes up every so often. They are using 225km/h on a regular basis on HS1.

And I presume 125mph would be the max speed on AC on the classic network

That may be true, however the maximum on conventional AC lines is 125mph and while they do not run on those lines in normal service there is nothing to stop them running at those speeds if they did.

Correct but TP's point was if the conventional track could handle a train at 125mph then that would be the limit. Obviously if the maximum linespeed is lower then the top speed of the 395 is academic.

Presumably, they are limited to 100mph on National Rail lines as they are only cleared to run on third rail lines, which have a maximum speed of 100mph.

If they were required to work on AC lines, unless there are other factors involved, I would imagine that they would be able to run at 125mph (on the ECML for example).

I believe the timetable can be maintained with 125mph running, but every 395 I have ever been on ( on the HS1 sector ) has run up at least to 135mph and most have touched the full 140mph.

Not necessarily. The NoL 373s were limited to 110mph on the ECML due to power supply limits.

There are stretches of track south of Grantham where they can run up to line speed-there are blue 'TGV' signs indicating this-one by hitchin and one in the stookley bank past Huntingdon.

What? I was referring to the fact that they are only allowed to travel at 125mph south of Grantham. They are restricted to 110mph north of Grantham. (Well, they were. They aren't used on the ECML anymore).

One more time: 373/2 sets were initially restricted to 110 and later cleared for 125 where permitted, South of Grantham. The reason was pan head / catenary interaction. I worked on the job.

395s as said, do run at the full 225 on CTRL but still manage to get in the way very often.
