OK, but that doesn't really answer either of my questions.

I'm glad that they're not all going for dog food cans, but I am a bit concerned that ultimately this will only defer it's eventual scrapping. I've said before that there is a risk that this will simply be a mirror of the Cl306 situation. Perhaps the fact that one remains extant, in whatever condition, will ensure that it is available for restoration further down the line.

A cursory search of Companies House website for ‘class 315’ should be a required task before anyone is allowed to proclaim a class 315 as ‘saved’.

I’m certainly not holding my breath given the group’s track record. A dose of realism would be sensible.

Yes, the self-same. At the risk of introducing topic-drift, while the Cl306 remained at Ilford it had a comfy life being stored under cover in the New Shed, and it was a minter. When I caught up with it next almost 3 years ago, it had found it's way to Shildon and was in a very sorry state having been stored outside. There were parts missing, the overall condition of the body and paintwork was very poor and one of the driving cars was no longer weather-tight and was being stored under a tarp.

I fear that this is what will happen to any Cl315 that finds it's way into preservation (assuming that it actually does). It's one thing to snag yourself a withdrawn unit, but you still have to have the money, know-how and facilities to look after it as well as some sort of plan for it going forward.

Wasn’t it “confirmed” that 315820 was to be preserved?

I’ll believe it when it happens. There’s also far more to preservation than buying it and moving it somewhere else. Some remote line in South Wales doesn’t really seem like a position if strength when expertise on the class resides in East London.

It was not billed as such by the BLS as far as I am aware. The whole situation regarding the Class 315 Group involvement is a tad confusing to be honest. They said on Facebook they were co-organisers, and that it would be the last time a 315 visits Shenfield.

However, the tickets, guidebook, and other publicity had no mention of them. I think they got to put their headboard on the train in the end though, along with a speech at Liverpool Street and some merch sales.

Not publicly announced but a high up at MTR said that 9th December is last day they want to use them. They are on lease until sometime in 2023 though so if there are no 345s to operate these diagrams a 315 will be subbed back in, but this is extremely unlikely and should not be relied upon. So basically 9th December if all goes well.

Also,
IMPORTANT: The 17:35 LST - 18:05 GDP diagram (2C62) has been permanently subbed for a 345. Do not use this diagram to catch a 315, only use 2C76 (18:04 LST - 18:34 GDP).

It is also unknown whether the morning diagrams are still alive or not.

edit 5 December: they’re alive :)

The morning diagrams are still active, so there are only 3 per weekday now.

One article says "Sales Purchase Agreement", the other says donation. Which is right?

Could be both? Typically there will be an admin fee change hands even for donated vehicles.

315838 & 315847 worked their last trains yesterday and are leaving soon. 42 years of service ended.

It's a shame 315838 couldn't have survived until the end as it was the better of the two Brush-motored sets left. Very minor point to most I don't doubt, but I hope they use 315837 on the last passenger service so there are both types of motors on the final working. Let's just hope the bitter weather doesn't cause any problems.

Also, to clarify a couple of points, the Class 315 Preservation Society were mentioned in the Farewell Event publicity: they feature prominently in the souvenir booklet, the e-ticket and were mentioned in the pre-tour blurb on the BLS' website.

As for the scheduled off-lease date, it is now 17th December 2022 according to Eversholt (it was previously showing as a December 2022 - April 2023 window) so they aren't scheduled to be on lease into 2023.

There was a farewell tour on 26th November, so I think that they are all gone already. Sorry, mate

Do we know for definite if the 9th December is the final day for the 315s? The week after it looks as though the workings stop coming from Aldersbrook so I presume it is?

Yes. Also another update, they’re only on lease until 17 December. So no reliance on if EL breaks down for a 315, you’ll have to catch one of the last 12 diagrams now
