We’ve been over this before and now it’s back using a speculative post to bring the ‘idea’ back up in this speculative post.Connected with another post in this sub forum about splitting off the North East local services I would think that the 175s could fit well with this, whether as a standalone operation or run by another operator (personally I suggested LNER)
Yes I’ve read the earlier posts about Heaton supplying units to half of the North but that could change in time, and with the 175s as stable mates to GC’s 180s that may help things with both fleets.
Why would Northern take on 175s for the North East, when they’re unreliable, most likely not route cleared and nil traction knowledge for drivers and guardsWe’ve been over this before and now it’s back using a speculative post to bring the ‘idea’ back up in this speculative post.
It won’t happen because Northern, as mentioned numerous times, have a 15x replacement plan in place which includes the North East fleet.
Also there aren’t enough 175’s for the NE services as it stands now and made worse due to the uplift with the Durham Coast fasts (now happening in Dec 23 due to Hartlepool not being ready) and Ashington in the future.
Finally as mentioned elsewhere the 180’s are being replaced by ex AWC 221’s.
More to the point, what services are they suitable for in that area? Why would Northern take on 175s for the North East, when they’re unreliable, most likely not route cleared and nil traction knowledge for drivers and guards
Indeed, most likely noneMore to the point, what services are they suitable for in that area?
To be fair those same issues are going to apply wherever they go - unless they stay with TfW, and they've shown no desire for that to happen. Why would Northern take on 175s for the North East, when they’re unreliable, most likely not route cleared and nil traction knowledge for drivers and guards
TfW have new units on order, which will make the 175s redundantTo be fair those same issues are going to apply wherever they go - unless they stay with TfW, and they've shown no desire for that to happen.
I know, I drive them.TfW have new units on order, which will make the 175s redundant
A one way trip to the scrapyardI know, I drive them.
My point was that wherever the 175s go, traincrew knowledge is going to be an issue, and in most cases clearance also. The North East is not unique in that respect.
I don’t know how many Class 156s are currently operated by Northern, but best I can tell, it’s more than 27.Sending 175s to the North East would be good as a stop-gap solution until the new trains are built and ready, as it would mean all 156s could be withdrawn within the next year rather than in 7 years.
Do you mean 156s in the North East or the whole Northern fleet?I don’t know how many Class 156s are currently operated by Northern, but best I can tell, it’s more than 27.
Most useful home for them in my humble opinion is gwr to displace the turbos to commuter lines and ease their own parts issue. However even that's unlikely. My feelings are the 175s will be scrapped, unless a useful home is found
Their previous operators have coped with the 175s not having compatible couplers.IIRC 175s don't have compatible couplings with other classes, if so, this would make them even more useless
GWR management have enough experience of the 180s to stay away. Most useful home for them in my humble opinion is gwr to displace the turbos to commuter lines and ease their own parts issue. However even that's unlikely.
Angel Trains confirmed they’ve found a new operator for them, they just haven’t said which operator. My feelings are the 175s will be scrapped, unless a useful home is found
Where?Angel Trains confirmed they’ve found a new operator for them
Like I said it's very unlikely.GWR management have enough experience of the 180s to stay away.
Phillip is decidedly vague.Do you mean 156s in the North East or the whole Northern fleet?
And the plot thickens…Angel Trains confirmed they’ve found a new operator for them, they just haven’t said which operator.
Do you mean 156s in the North East or the whole Northern fleet?
Obviously it's been said that 175s may go to Chiltern. Personally this does make sense to me as they can run the express services out of Marylebone to Birmingham and Stourbridge, and either run the EWR services or cascade some 168s onto it. This does save leasing 196s from WMR to cover EWR.
OK well thanks for the confirmation, however it was just a logical supposition.196s will be used on EWR, it's already agreed. 175s will not be used on EWR. The DfT have specified the traction to be used on the new route so not much point speculating to the contrary.
Well, the reality is, is if Northern don't get replacement stock soon, their service will fall to pieces as old stock simply goes kaput due to age. It’s like bloody Groundhog Day on here. The very second Northern gets mentioned yet again, everyone decides that Heaton, no Longsight, no Newton Heath is the ultimate place for them (despite the fact that I’ve already explained the fleet plan as far as I am permitted which doesn’t involve 175’s).
Seriously this is a speculation thread and I’ve already debunked any speculation regarding 175’s and Northern so now it’s flying off into an ‘ignore the reality of the speculation’ thread.
