Even with all the 197s and Mk4 sets in service, TfW could retain them (at least the ones that still work) for West Wales locals and Heart of Wales, allowing them to get rid of all of their 150 and 153 units.
All 150s will leave after the south Wales metro is complete with 153 units remaining for the howl service after full 197 introduction

Should the 175s actually stay to replace the 67s and MK4?

TfW could also look at services to Bristol using more of the 175s.

Could the 175s do those services instead of 153s? Since they are younger and nicer units.
I believe its been mentioned here that the 175s have higher track access charges, it would also only require about 8 units all of which would be 2 carriages and they require specialist maintenance

It would be great to keep the 175's, but there's the big issue of maintaining them. The Mk4's won't be going anywhere for a while unless something drastic happens, as most of the carriages are owned by TfW now.
If maintenance could be transferred to Canton or a new Depot (Landore?) then the 175's would be ideal to keep West/HOWL and even new services Swansea-Bristol? But it all depends on if the numbers add up. The 153's won't last forever but there's currently no public plan to replace them.
But judging how there are 2 already stopped awaiting transfer back to the leasing company, it doesn't look like they will be staying.

Why don’t they get sent to East West rail and Bletchley, split between London Northwestern Railway, and Chiltern? Then they can run Marston Vale services as well.

Are they as unreliable as the 230s? I’m not sure.

With regards to the 153s, they'll just be replaced with a few more 2 car 197s to keep Newport busy enough to stay open.

How many weeks extension would that actually deliver?

TfW have 26 153s. That is maybe 13 2-car 197s. Newport can probably produce those in four months work.

TFW are only keeping 8 x 153s. They will be withdrawing the others along with the 150s, 158s and 175s, when all the new stock will be in place.

The 8 they are keeping I believe is just for the HOWL services doubled up to 2 cars per diagram.

That keeps the factory open for an even shorter extension then.

Yes. The HOWL would probably only need an extra 4 197s (2 cars). Its probabaly down to money however, the HOWL doesnt generate much profit given its limited service and how many people get free travel with bus passes in the Winter months.

The original plan was for the 170s to do HOWL when they 230s were able to replace them on the Maesteg/Cheltenham/Ebbw Vale lines. They were also going to do some other services like Shrewsbury-Crewe and Pembroke Dock. But that plan changed when it was decided the 170s would be going to EMR. The 197s will do Shrewsbury-Crewe and Pembroke Dock whilst the HOWL will keep the 153s.

It's 13 sets they are keeping: 7 fully PRM modified, 6 bike carrying/PRM lite sets.

It's a tiny facility, so some way can be found of making it last a while, even if it costs a disproportionate amount. To me, it seems like a perfect place to put a new TMD for the CAF units if WG are so desperate to put it in Wales.

No reason you couldn't have Chester for North and Newport for South?

How many serviceable 175s are there at the moment? last I heard was 21 out of the 27 built. Northern who had them as Arriva* North Western was first raised on here as the best place for them, which I think would work wonders on their longer distance routes.

*First.

The HOWL doesn't generate any profit and quite possibly never has!

It was First North Western, not Arriva. Of the initial privatised TOCs Arriva had Regional Railways North East and Merseyrail, and only then after they took over the ailing MTL company that won those franchises initially.

How do you get your units into the plant as last time I looked there was still no connection to the railway.

You would need to build an extremely short chord to link it to the railway, but there will be significant spare capacity at Canton anyway with the tram-trains being run from Taff's Well.

Have 175s ever worked timetable services out of Manchester Victoria - for either FNW/TPE/Northern/ATW/TfW?
