But the nation is outraged that we couldn't have let them build more crap trains, and deliver them late only to have them fail for ridiculously trivial things at any time, without notice!

David Cameron must be sacked for allowing this to happen!

Oh No, We in the Labour Party, who have never complained about having Alstom close the Washwood Heath plant, and ordered huge amount of German Built reliable trains, need to call an inquest! Because its soooo Unfair!

What have they built recently?

379s - awesome!

Meaning what have the built on time in derby reccently? Were they deliverd on time? Maybe so, but really only with the help of temporary workers...Partly because of the 'delayed' delivery of...The 172s

One of the Chiltern ones makes a really odd buzzing noise when accelerating, it's one of the units in the 6-car set. I can hear it over in-ear headphones, so it's pretty loud. It seems to have coincided with the set being turned around and so running 'backwards', but I don't know if that happens a lot and I just haven't noticed!

Sounds Like 172104...

After experiencing London Overgrounds 172s myself, ill admit that still i have a pretty low opinion of them! Firstly, after so many years, Why Mechanical Transmission for a start...

And if i was a commuter on the Chiltern Lines, No-wonder why i prefer a nice riding and peaceful Mk3 to a, to be honest, rather noisy and rattly 172!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdFCQE61mSA

As for where the rattling noise is coming from, try all the loose panels around the inside of the 172! A problem which i have to admit from experience, funnily enough, only seems to plague Bombardiers products!

Blimey, it sounds like a bus

Also, what's that strange noise around 1:27

Good Question! Either sounds like it's either sneezing or scattering itself onto the tracks, which given the state of products by bombarider wouldnt supprise me  Unless its those wonderful Eco Flexx bogies taking a point?

Either way, im glad i wont be commuting on those things or having to use them on a stop start service - hearing the sound of the transmission change constantly up and down would drive anyone mad! Well, that and the constant rattling of poorly fitted panels!

Engine wise, theyve got a pretty supprising 1 x MTU 6H1800R83 of 485hp per car with ZF Ecomat-Rail 6 speed
ZF Reversing final drive ( Bus Based Transmission ), whereas the Diesel Hyrdaulic transmission Voith Hydraulic T211rzze to ZF final drive
170s are powerd by the 1 x MTU 6R 183TD of 422hp per car, so the 170 is underpowerd, and the 172 overpowerd!

IS the 175 juuust right with a 450hp cummins?

Serously though, why cant Bombardier or Alstom make somthing that feels like a quality product?

The 185s are getting a bit tired now, thanks in part to a lot of vandalism (carving names into the plastics) etc. But they alwayed had a nice aire of quality about them, everything fitted properly, nothing squeaked and the doors had a satisfying clunk when they closed.

From what I'm hearing about the 172s, this just isn't the case, the 175s (the other alternative base unit) does have a nice feel of quality on board, but wasn't too reliable in the first instance.

Personally, with all the weight saving thats going on for the Desiro City units that will adorn thameslink shortly, why doesn't the likes of Siemens come up with one with a smattering of Diesels or Gas Turbines on board. Possibly with a transformer aswell, but that would mean a fixed formation of at least 4 cars (3* 750hp Diesel / Gas Generator, 1* 2.5KW Transformer)

There are a decent number (that I know of) of inter reigonal (100mph) diesel only services in the country that could do with being fixed formation 4+ car units. Doubled up to 8 or 12 car units. I'm thinking Portsmouth - Cardiff, Waterloo - Exeter - West Country, Chiltern Main Line (They'll hate me for saying inter-reigonal), and almost every route in Scotland, and a fair wack of commuter routes round the north.

And lord may I be struck down for saying this, but I'd rather have a quality product on the rails in the UK that will last a good solid 50 years. Rather than a product made at Derby or Washwood Heath, that will fall appart in 20 or so years. I can see the 185s outlasting the 172s.

But then again, I'm of the opinion that if we work fast enough on electrification we don't need to order any more Diesel units, or Bi-Mode units. And with the first of the 3rd Gen diesels expected to last until 2030 (Clubman units) we could spend the money now and made a decision that would see no more diesel units needed to be ordered, ever. Or at least until 2050 where more 'self powered' units might be needed for the lines where electrification would be utterly pointless, but the economies of scale may have changed by then. The only diesel things I would look at ordering would be locomotives.

Anyway, back on topic.

Bombardier need to get their act together with these quality issues. I've been on 170s and seen better put together kit cars, in a shed! Ceriously, a TP 170, fresh out of refurbishment, and the electrical equipment is household external junction boxes, cracked, and held together with insulation tape! But it seems at the moment that Bombardier and CSRE are the only available options for diesel units in the UK, and I may be waivering on CSRE, I have spoken (by email) to one of their UK managers, and the product the're putting together seems mechanicaly sound, and will be able to meet new Euro emissions regulations. If they can make it (I'm gonna be hated for this aswell) quality like a desiro, then I'm waivering to giving CSRE a chance to build the next order of Diesel units, for Northern, directly replacing the pacers. On the proviso, they are made compatable and couplable to sprinter stock. (The only thing in favour of 170/172 products at the minute)

Oh and PS: I'm sure some of you know how critical of CSRE I have been in the past, and that it's quite hard for me to say that

Have you seen the 465/2/9s and the 466s they were bulit by GEC Alsthom (Metro-Cammell) and some of the doors wobble when the train is moving they're full of water and also the 466s especially have a great tendency to fail on a daily basis and they're not 20 years old yet! This isn't to be confused with the better built 465/0/1s which are much more reliable:)

Didnt CSRE intend to build a factory in the uk if they got work? i know they wanted to get a foothold in the eu market.

As for the class 172's i have travelled on the London Overground ones, and they they sound so bad i would rather be on an enviro 200 dart which is saying somthing as i cant stand the things.

i am hoping that the decision not to give bombardier thameslink will give the management a good kick and hopefully they will sort themslves out.

i would hope that bombardier get the crossrail order but my money is on either seimens or CAF

For crossrail, my money is on Siemens, with exactly the same stock as Thameslink would be desirable.

But also for Crossrail I want to see more routes being taken over by it west of Paddington, initially as is with some 14tph terminating at Paddington, but I would like to see more through services onto the branches, and possibly taking over some services on the WCML.

So it should be added into whatever contract is given (and to be honest, I think it should be Siemens, as an extention of the Thameslink rolling stock contract, would keep costs down. It should be written in that further units can be built later to the same specification for network expansion. Such as WCML Slows (would sections of 6 track be unthinkable), or the Amersham / Aleysbury line

16tph for the GWML, 4tph for the Chiltern and 4tph for the WCML?

4tph Reading
4tph Heathrow
4tph West Drayton
4tph Tring / Milton Keynes
4tph Greenford via GWML
4tph Chiltern Stoppers

I'll stop before I get too far off topic

Agreed. Personally think the branch lines along the route between London Paddington & Reading should be wired and be operated as part of crossrail with the great western franchise running all of the high speed services.

Here here to that...

What branches have we though, and would any of them take 10 car units?

Yes we should wire them and integrate them into the crossrail franchise whatever happens, but they could run independent of the core crossrail service.

'Crossrail Connect'? (I'll take this to a new thread, very off topic now)

And back to 172s...

Went past Tyseley yesterday and jotted down 172331/332/333/338, having seen 338 on tests at Shirley earlier in the day. Just wondering, is that actually all of the 172s LM have at the moment, or am I missing some?

That's the only one's I have seen, although there are at least 2 possibly 3 complete trains at Derby

The amount of times this sort of question has been asked... However I do not mind answering as you new (welcome to the forums by the way :D). Basically, from what I've heard, the 172s could start entering service anytime from the start of September but it's more like December for the whole 172/3 fleet. I presume all 172s (including 172/2) will be in service by Spring 2012. The 150s will not go until their replacements have arrived and been thoroughly tested - even so, LM want to keep a couple of 150s so it's all a bit iffy :)

Welcome to the forum firstly. Then to add, the 150s wont go anywhere till the 172s are ready so theres no issue there (except for northern and FGW)

Not quite, two LM 150s are due to move to FGW by the end of the month, regardless of the 172 situation.

I believe SOME of the 2 car 150/1s are leased by FGW but subleased to LM (feel free to correct if wrong)

Ah-ha, I wondered which one passed my train at Tamworth yesterday, thanks for the gen.

It's also excellent news to hear that finally one unit is ready for passenger service! :D

As of yesterday lunchtime, there were no less than five 172/3s visible from the Birmingham to Derby line in the works yard at Derby, so previous reports that all the 172/3s are complete are most probably accurate and they should hopefully move to Tyseley soon.
