class 150 / 153 combo on Snow Hill line.

Who remembers this scene then?

Taken some 15+ years ago when i was a young man!

There was still one trundling about in that livery (with East Midlands Trains) until either 2008 or 2009.

Like most of their SuperSprinter fleet, it was utterly knackered in every way. I think it's benefited from a refurb now.

Saw an LM 153 attached to a FGW 158 at Cheletenham yesterday morning, then an LM 153 attached to FGW 142 at Exeter headed for Exmouth. So there were at least two hired to FGW yesterday.

Yep. I found that out down at Dorridge today! Got some great photos of 001. Its had a new headlight bulb fitted as the light actually fills the whole circle light now. And it is bright!

Went on 150001 and 153375 today! And saw 172338 and 172339 at Snow Hill!

Was on one of these without realising yesterday - I got on the 1528 Dorridge-Stourbridge Jn working at Moor St and off at Jewellery Quarter. I managed to get a poor shot (I had to take it before a crowd of people behind me went past), which I'll attach later

I cam across an article the other day, saying that LM plan to transfer 5 units from the Chase Line to the Snow Hill Lines. Does anyone know when this is due to happen and will all trains on the Chase now be 2 car 170's, even at high peak?

By that I'm guessing that means 5 153s.

As far as I'm aware there is only the one diagram on the Chase Line that uses a 153 these days. I don't think I've seen that for a while either to be honest.

It seems to be mainly 2 car 170s and the one 3 car. I wouldn't have thought the Chase Line uses much more than 5 units anyway...


Perhaps it was an old article from before the 153 (seemingly) disappeared?

Here's my theory.

I class 153 can go very easily. But this is used on the 07:39 Rugeley to Birmingham in the mornings and 17:07 Birmingham to Rugeley in the evenings, so will be a nightmare for overcrowding.

The one 3 car 170 can be swapped for a 2 car one.

And the one 3 car 170 that is used for the 07:39 Hednesford to Birmingham service can go. It is possible to do this by splitting the 06:21 Rugeley to Birmingham and 06:27 Birmingham to Rugeley trains at Walsall with the services north of Birmingham being opperate by a 2 car 170 and south of Walsall by either a 350 or 323 (if one can be found from somewhere, possible from the Cross City). That would mean that only one aditional unit is required on the Chase in the morning peak instead of 2. This would however mean that the 07:39 Hednesford to New Street would be formed of 2 cars, when it's already overcorwded on the aproach to New Street with 3 cars.

So thats how 5 coaches can be removed from the Chase. Will need a small timetable change though.

The only way they could it without taking a unit from the Hereford line is for the 06:21 Rugeley to Birmingham and 07:39 Hednesford to Birmingham to start at Walsall and be opperated by EMU's. The latter of those would be more difficalt because passengers at Cannock and Hednesford would be put on the trains either side of that which would both be reduced from 3 to 2 cars and the 07:39 Rugeley to Birmingham is already overcrowded.

Could the 07:05 Great Malvern to New Street be reduced from 4 to 2 cars?

Either Hereford/Worcester or Rugeley has to lose out.

I did see a picture from May 2011, with a 3 car LM 170 on tests going through Dorridge. Although it is greater comfort, it won't be for timing and the 172s from the passenger video by simonthetrains, they seem to accelerate just like a 150.

That forms the 07:33 at Droitwich — people are standing by the time it reaches Droitwich Spa, and it's still 40mins to New St. Shorten that service and people will be left behind to catch the next New St. train which is even busier even though it's formed of 5 carriages.
