My old back street chippy in Altrincham used to do peas that hadn’t quite mushed but were still clearly round. They tasted superb. I think Northern chip shop peas were pretty much of this consistency years ago. Nowadays most chippies up North prefer to serve a pea purée, which can be quite thick.

Proper mushy peas are made with rehydrated marrowfat peas which are completely different taste and texture than garden peas.

Growing up in South Yorkshire, chip shops universally offered scraps for free with anything you bought. My local one was open 1130-1330 and 1600-2030 each day.

Edinburgh has a large number of chip shops run by Italians, I don't know if there's a specific reason for that though.

London, I have two chippies near me. My preferred one is run by a Chinese family and does Chinese food as well. The other one is near the the tube station and has a sit down area... which is good if you fancy a quick meal on the way home that you can sit and eat in a civilised fashion at a table with a plate, rather than walking down the street. In general there seem to be fewer of them down south, and more dodgy chicken /kebab shops.

A large Life Assurance company I once worked for had a CEO who sounded as Scots as they come but from his name and appearance you could tell he was actually of Italian descent. He was actually from Glasgow but apparently there is a large Italian community there.

Quite a few Italians in the late 19th century left their country to escape poverty and famine, Not all made it to the USA, many settled in Scotland and Wales. Ice cream parlours and fish and chip shops were set up by some of these families, and they were joined by others during the First World War. Then many Italian prisoners-of-war were imprisoned in Scotland during WW2, and chose to stay on release. I believe the delightful comedienne/impressionist Ronni Ancona's family set up a fish n chips shop in Paisley about 1914.

Yeah I thought I had heard similar. A friend of mine has a very german name but is from Norwich, his grandfather was a POW down there after being shot down when he was in the Luftwaffe.
