Super chip shop in Mallaig - we were told by the guard to get there PDQ on arrival - the train crew had an arrangement and were given a queue jumping package. Mind you we had a class 26 hauling us in those days.

You must have been lucky. Mallaig is a contender for the worst fish and chips I ever tasted. But the prize still goes to the Pentland Fry in Edinburgh, where I was once stupid enough to ask for pie and chips (they didn't even offer gravy....). I watched in horror as they took a cold pie from the fridge, dropped it in the hot oil for a few minutes. then served it up with crappy limp soggy chips, and owing to the peculiarity of the Scottish pie shape, it formed a perfect cup to retain the heating medium, whatever it was. I was hungry, and remained so........
Rays chip shop on Portland is lovely, cheap and tasty whatever I've had, the other ones on Portland not so good. Weymouth is also a good pace for chippies, although, generally more expensive.
All this north south thing, we have coasts and fishing too, so we should now a thing ot two about cooking fish.
The only problem I have with both Chip shops and kebab shops is asking for chips and cheese and them using white slime rather than cheddar, makes the whole point of adding cheese pointless. This is the one thing the kebab shop on Portland does right luckily

I have pretty good memories of eating at Fish 'n' Fritz..is it still there?

I've heard Rick Stein's fish 'n' chips emporium in Padstow is pretty good, but I understand it charges pretty good prices too, and the queues are long in the summer.
As a general rule, avoid places that display a notice saying 'winner of local newspaper fish 'n' chippie of the year' from back in the year dot: they've been trading on that for years and (A) think they can charge premium prices as a result and (b) the stuff they churn out now is dire. Yes, I do mean a certain chip shop in Herne Hill, and one in Helston too!

I do remember going to a chip shop in St Helier Jersey. There was a leaflet on each table explaining the health benefits of fish and chips - healthy fish, vitamins in the potatoes etc. Made me laugh.
Someone mentioned Liverpool having terrible chippys and to be honest I would have to disagree, however, Chris's and Steve's which are both very close to where I live in Mossley Hill have been voted the best in Liverpool pretty regularly. That said I don't have frequent experience of other places. Where I lived in Bradford which was the student area the chippys were terrible, but the curry houses were amazing. The worst fish and chips I had on the entire planet (Including Southern England) were in Blackpool.

To be fair I don't think I've ever seen a chippy serve garden (or otherwise non mushy) peas.
I have. They had an choice between mushy and garden.

A couple in MK are now, but for a long time none were which was a right nuisance.
That’s good, but you’ve got me thinking is MK in the Midlands or the South East?!

Add to that one in Broughton, Milton Keynes. On the 2 occasions I've tried it (everyone deserves a second chance!) it has been dreadful but has won awards. Voted for by customers apparently. Wonder how many were family members.
That is the mystery of Milton Keynes.
It's all 'down south' to me.

The Beeb think it's in East Anglia, but it's south of the Watford Gap and associates to London (as London overspill is where most of the locals come from). So I'd personally put it in the SE, but I can see how it could logically be in the south Midlands instead.
The best chippy that I have been to in a long time is Hennighan's Top Shop in Machynlleth - went there over the summer and was thoroughly impressed by the quality and reasonable prices.
yep still there next to what was Weymouth HiFi, infact pretty much all the fish and chip shops in Weymouth that I know of are still going.
Aye, that's pie and chips from a chippy - what exactly were you expecting?
Not sure about his sit in place but the chippy I had from his takeaway was very disappointing.

Went to a chip shop in Westham fortnight ago and they wrapped all in one packet in a tray, the chips were nice and chunky and slightly soft in the middle just perfectly salted as well.
It was called the swan by pevensey and westham railway station, well worth getting chips from there,

Unless the fleet was landing a catch on the Saturday, the fish won't be fresh. That's why I don't go to the chippy on a Monday either.

So.. how do we feel about chip butties?
Regardless of which day it is the fish will be frozen from Iceland or Norway at many chippies these days. There are still traditional ones that will buy from the morning market of course, but they are few and far between now.
Nothing wrong with a good old chip butty, i've just never held much regard for a chip butty 'splash'.
There’s a hybrid takeaway in Shenley Church End called Fish ‘n’ Chicken (or something like that) which does excellent fish and chips. In my opinion the best in Milton Keynes, though it’s not cheap.
It also happens to be very close to me!

Not sure about the splash either. Chip butties shouldn't be a soggy mess.
I was surprised how good it was when I had one, but I admit it was ages ago. I have been quite tempted to try another one recently... if I knew the chips were going to be the right texture (slightly crunchy outside to contrast with the barm cake/ bap / bread roll) I probably would.
RE the north versus south, I had a colleague and when we were together in the south he would refuse to go for chips with me, as "they didn't know how to make them properly!" I think it was the use of vegetable oil he objected to, and I note that a few places are now advertising their use of beef dripping or lard, & not confined to the north either.
Besides the Black Country Museum (and Beamish) there is a chip shop somewhere north of Tyseley I think, but a bit of a hike from a railway station. I watch out for others if I'm out travelling... There was also a mobile chip van in Cornwall that advertised that they cooked in dripping.
