Only seems fair to give them a thread of their own separate to the WSMR thread.

So, pictures (as mentioned in the other thread) of the first DVT here.

Questions:

I guess the passenger carriages will be predominately white, like the units?

What formations will they be using- similar to the WSMR?

What about internals- like WSMR, or higher capacity?

Will they be getting a pool of liveried locos to match?

I did wonder about that...

Chiltern heritage stock is all blue. The DVT is all blue, could be that Chiltern are sticking to blue for heritage stock and white for the modern units.

So what is Chiltern using - refurbished Mk 3A stock, or have they bought some of the ex-Irish Mk 3 stock with power operated doors? I'm confused as to how much loco hauled stock Chiltern is getting.

Standard class only?
Any catering vehicles?

No idea if it is ex-Irish, but the vehicle change request was for power operated door Mk IIIs.

Do we know with confidence that Chiltern/DB have brought some Irish power operated door Mk IIIs into England?

If so, is it standard Irish Mk III stock with power doors or is it the "International Train" which, once rebogied, would have "grandfather" rights in the UK.

...sorry for my ignorance, but what does "grandfather rights" mean? I've heard it banded about here a lot, and still havn't the faintest what it's implying...

^^oh rite, sorry - never heard it used before elsewhere. also wouldn't the irish carriages have to be converted back to standard gauge? also never knew there were any mk3's with automatic doors, thought it was only development brought in on mk4's...

If they've bought some Irish Mark 3 stock they'd only need to put them on BT10 bogies, and there must be some of those spare as a few Sleeping cars have been scrapped, plus some of the surplus Restaurant Buffets.

Not only that but unless theyve rewired the Mk3's, they would have to have brought over some of the generator vans aswell, becasue the Irish Rail Mk3's are wired to take eth and power from the van than the locos...As for the bogies, cant they just reduce the width of the exsisting bogies? Thus giving them an overhaul at the same time...

There's what looks like an ex-british rail Mk3 sitting at Aylesbury Depot. It's not used by Wrexham and Shropshire, I know that.

This link implies its conversion to automatid doors from normal stock

http://www.railway-technology.com/contractors/signal/delta-rail/press7.html

I wonder if there will be any 1st class or catering facilities?

Now that is extremely interesting. The sort of work it looks like they have in mind is pretty intensive - power doors, PIS displays, retention tank toilets, new body-end doors (as opposed to just vestibule doors), CCTV, etc. That would suggest this is by no means a short term thing - the Mk3s appear to be being refurbished for a lengthy period of use. Sounds good!

...well it does say its so they can be used beyond 2019. I think its amazing we are refurbing these trains - shows how well built they are, also very eco friendly instead of building new trains...

Plans are, of course, subject to change. Initial thoughts were for a Mk3 set to do a morning peak working from Banbury and an evening peak working back to Bicester, so as to free up a unit to strengthen another service.

Then the railway rumour mill got involved, and it was suggested that Chiltern/DB had bought 72 Mk3s, including a load of redundant Sleepers and the Irish Rail ones, and 14 DVTs (to cannibalise to form 8 'good' ones), and were planning on running the entire Birmingham service using LHCS. :D

As I understand it, however, Chiltern's plans have been put back for a year, as passenger growth hasn't been as high as anticipated.

Cheers,

Barry

From the link above:

DeltaRail is undertaking design work for Chiltern Railways to refurbish their Mk3 coaching stock for use on the London Marylebone to Birmingham service.

Chiltern proposes to start converting the first rake of four coaches towards the end of 2009.

That implies more than one rake therefore freeing up more than one unit?

This means they might start using more 168s on the London to Aylesbury via Amersham line :D
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Also, what loco are they likely to use? I hope it's not going to be the ugly class 67s.

I'd have thought it almost certainly will be 67s- presumably additional ones modified with the remote fire control system the WSMR (and EWS company train) liveried locos have.

And this is where it gets interesting...With Chiltern refurbishing there Mk3s to this standard, And by the sounds of it more on the way, Whats going to happen with the 172's ?

Think about it, 67&Mk3's come on the birmingham Moor Street services, 168's take over stratford's and various other 165 operated services...Does this meen the 172's will replace the 165's or vise versa...or will it just compliment there fleet?

They're only getting four 172s - hardly a replacement for the 165s! Apparently, they're to be used to complement the 165s on the Aylesbury line (where extra stock is needed, it's true).

I think Chiltern aren't interested in replacing trains - just improving the service by providing more!

I read/heard/imagined that Chiltern had said they were not interested in getting 172s and this idea had been caped?

Really? You could be right - I'm only going off Wikipedia here. Hopefully we'll see several new loco hauled sets then, allowing cascades of other units to less prestigious services - while I like Chiltern's service a lot, I get the impression services are often a bit short of stock - especially on the Aylesbury line.

Interesting about conversion to power doors, could this be as the line south of Banbury is DOO and one of the conditions of DOO is power doors or platform staff at each station? On the other hand I should imagine having loco-hauled passenger trains as DOO might fall foul of other rules there as I don't think it's been done before. Chiltern would probably get guards to work it.
