Right, but do we know what actually happened at Edinburgh?

1S25 arrived on time from London, and the other two portions left at/around the right time, so what delayed the Fort Bill portion?
Reported elsewhere that a carriage had to be shunted out of the Fort William portion.

The down Lowlander is showing delayed at Euston
Ecs for lowland currently stuck outside Euston whilst platform 1 is still occupied by 1S25 the Highlander.

RTT shows the Highlander finally depaerted 111 minutes late at 2306. Empty stock for Lowlander just arrived in platform 1, having been sitting oputside euston for nearly two hours. I imagine some of its passengers have been wanting to get to bed for quite a while now, especially those in the classic beds who don't get to use the lounge and will have been queuing in the cold at the entrance to Platform 1 since before 10pm

1s25 now at a stand in the vicinity of Harrow and Wealdstone so it looks like its going to be a long slow night on the Highlander

All portions over 2 hours late. Inverness and Aberdeen portions are both near Markinch as the Inverness is diverted via the Forth Bridge this morning

Is the Fort William cancelled and if so why?
Fort William portion is still going. It (finally) departed Edinburgh 0736, 166 late, and has been rerouted via Falkirk which should make up some time. However it is load 6 with a solo 73, which is certainly less than the preferred traction!

92010, which brought the Highlander north from Euston to Edinburgh, is currently taking a couple of day coaches back to Polmadie, not expected to arrive until 0837. This loco is required to drag the Glasgow portion back out of Central so that move will be delayed, blocking platform 1. This also happened earlier in the week resulting in cancellation of an Avanti service.

The CS is the Royalty of the railway - its every unfortune event or delay reported on with eager anticipation. Of note, out of the 10 CS individual leg services that ran yesterday, only 3 were delayed.

With respect, that's still 30% of their services running over 2 hours late this morning.

What I do absolutely give CS full credit for is that they appear to battle on far longer than other operators before they throw in the towel: They've carried on with the heavily delayed services this morning rather than dump their passengers onto ScotRail from Edinburgh. Equally it is far from unknown for CS to keep going when adverse weather has been forecast and other operators have blanket cancelled everything. Plus of course they continue to have well developed contingencies for ECML running when the WCML has planned closures.

Slightly interesting pathing decision in that this morning's heavily delayed Fort William portion is running just in front of the ScotRail 0821 to Oban and Fort William, which may well trigger knock-on delays to the West Highland Line for much of today.

Not to mention the Down Lowlander left 28 minutes late. Yes it made up the time, but still an inconvenience for the passengers waiting at Euston who wanted to get to sleep.

70% on time performance is of note, just not in the way you seem to think
70% on one bad day. In all honesty, noting that the CS-commentators pile onto any delay, the days where there are no comments - of which they have been many in the last few weeks alone - are indicative that the service is pretty good. Which marries up with the TOC stats of course.

I do wonder why there is such a vocal minority on the forum that love to hate the CS? I think the service is fantastic and great value personally. For me it is time efficiency of the service, the reliability (I have been delayed many, many more times on flights than on the CS), the fact it takes me as good as door to door and is cheaper than BA Business Class with less hassle if you factor in airport travel. I can absolutely see why it doesn't work for many - but then why take such an interest in the thread?

I don't agree that commenters hate the service. Like me, they are probably interested in the whys and wherefores. It's not news when services run like clockwork.

Fair, but if “not news” means in effect “ignored for purposes of perception”, then there’s a problem

Exactly this. Ultimately this is a discussion forum and it is right and proper there is open debate - but some of the criticisms levelled against CS in this thread are ridiculous at times. The scale of the complaining is out of all proportion to the standard of the service. This said, I am not sure there is much that can be done. As a premium service more people comment on it than will be regular users of it - and that always attracts weighted negatives.

The statistics are flawed poorly in CSs favour because they have only a handful of journeys each day. LNER for example cancelled 5 trips on Thursday for example, wasn't a thread about that, but just 1 or 2 cancellations for CS and its brought up.

As a full time rail commuter 1960-2007 I recollect only one very short over run on BR Southern Region.

There is currently a sleeper carriage at Edinburgh Waverley opposite platform 6.

It wasn't so much the late departure as the late boarding. The stock was stuck outside Euston until 2315, awaiting the late departure of the Highlander. That meant boarding an hour or more late - annoying if you want to get to bed, and even more so if you are not on a Club ticket and can't use the lounge.

RTT incorrectly showed it as cancelled but also showed it running, although "No Report" between Newbridge Junction and Westerton as it ran via Falkirk instead of, as booked, via Airdrie. Given the time it actually ran from Edinburgh, it would have lost a lot more time via Airdrie as the local services had started by then.

CS attracts attention because it's an unusual and quite complicated operation, whereas no-one is likely to follow or comment on services at the other end of the spectrum, say the Waterloo and City or the Stourbridge Town shuttle.

Plus things going wrong always attract more attention than things going right. Ten cars running into each other on a motorway will feature in the headlines, ten million cars not running into each other won't get any attention. Even more so where railways are concerned.
