Fully agree with this thought, but isn't there some evidence of several piles being part driven?

This is just brilliant. With you doing this stretch and Dave and Paul doing other stuff, I may try and do something different. Originally I was also going to do Sidgreaves/Darkinson Lane - but I may do here instead - as I am home next weekend for about 3 days.

Significant progress on the Ordsall Chord bridge today. The arch has now been lifted close to the bridge deck all set for the big lift next Tuesday.
It's more difficult to get good photos now but I have added a few mobile phone shots to my Flickr album.

2. He's spotted a bit of good news at Dean Clough. I had wondered why nowt had happened there and why a pile was still lying around since before Christmas. Wrinkley has looked more closely, please compare the two shots in this mini-album.

The entire universe surrounding Salford Central station is changing rapidly.
But the dingiest platforms in the UK soldier on, with not even a lick of paint on the crumbling platform edges.
According to this post on Skyscrapercity, platforms 1 and 2 will be done up but not the others at the moment.

1 and 2 are being done up, 3,4,5 were supposed to be recommissioned (and local money given to them to do that) but now Network Rail want more money because they cocked up and installed an overhead mast where the platforms were supposed to be.

These shots reminded me to mention two different things:
1. On my Salford to Blackpool and back journey on Thursday I was struck by the number of new bases only feet away from ones installed in the BB era. Can anyone explain this?
2. At the presentation ten days ago (I asked if I could be sent the overheads, by the way) the Salford-Euxton Jct manager mentioned "May/June" for replacing the foot crossings with bridges. I attach the Bridgeoscope to remind people where they are.

I don't think any of the BB concrete ones are being "replaced" (ie taken out).
They are just sinking piles in new locations, some of which are very close to the old concrete ones.
You also might find a new pile with the old concrete one apparently being an anchor for it.
It won't be clear how it will all work until the steelwork goes up.
I can't work out if the concrete stuff is "wrong", or if it is, say, not strong enough for the steelwork planned for it.
It's also patchy, with plenty of concrete ones still evidently going to be used.
All those around Windsor Bridge South Jn are concrete. No sign of any piles there (yet).

It was the scale of it which unnerved me. I must stress, however, it was an impression whilst I was busy logging like mad, so I'll be very happy to be told it only amounts to neither nowt nor summat.

Interesting to see signs of actual work on the Westhoughton line with bases appearing well beyond what would be required for the safety over-run at Lostock Junction. Many comments have been made about the timing of work for this line having been delayed and that therefore progress through Network Rail's GRIP process having been held back accordingly. Construction would imply the route now being at GRIP Stage 6 and effectively beyond the risk of cancellation. Any comments from anyone on the inside?
The bridge over the Wigan line at Lostock station has to be raised to give clearance as required by the new rules. This was confirmed at the IRSE meeting in Preston and Network Rail have already put the planning application in to Bolton Council. A start date for this would give some indication of the timing for the project.

Chew Moor is (with a slightly modified vowel) good advice on how to avoid indigestion, and is not to be confused with Chew Magna near Bristol. (Or with Chewksbury.

I very much doubt that work is starting on Lostock to Wigan, other than the overrun to prevent wrongly routed electric trains causing a dewirement. According to the Enhancements Delivery Update, it is supposed to complete GRIP 3 in March 2017, and there are no more milestones shown for it after that. Oxenholme to Windermere is the same.

Indeed but what a potential wasted opportunity to start a continuous rolling program after Manchester to Blackpool via Preston using the same teams/equipment without loosing the skills base again

The rules for the length of the over-run are a bit excessive, anyway, but the long over-run towards Westhoughton is only to get the end of the wire onto a straight-ish bit of track ,so that the Phase 7 neutral section can be built there (later).
To my knowledge Phase 6 is just completing GRIP2 and Phase 7 design hasn't begun yet.
