Even If they've done only 100 yards that's still almost 1% of the 6.5 mile distance
1 down 99 more to go....
Agreed, but in fact the bases stretch surprisingly more than 100yds.
More like 4 down, 96 to go.

I'd always assumed, based on no experience or evidence, that if a crew was doing a piling session and they knew they only had time to get one partly in before having to hand possession back it would be better to do that and return later to finish off, rather than waste that bit of time.
This doesn't contradict your suggestion.
I have added some further pictures of progress with piling and track renewal between Preston and Salwick here.

Significant progress on the Ordsall Chord bridge today. The arch has now been lifted close to the bridge deck all set for the big lift next Tuesday.
It's more difficult to get good photos now but I have added a few mobile phone shots to my Flickr album.

Hopefully Dave can also add them to the Combined Volume..

Great to see Salford Central looking like a proper station - and all the other progress too!
According to this post on Skyscrapercity, platforms 1 and 2 will be done up but not the others at the moment. But the dingiest platforms in the UK soldier on, with not even a lick of paint on the crumbling platform edges.
1. On my Salford to Blackpool and back journey on Thursday I was struck by the number of new bases only feet away from ones installed in the BB era. Can anyone explain this?
Wrinkley has been busy.
1. He has sent a batch of photos he took in the Chew Moor area showing piling by the Wigan line SW of Lostock Junction.
So, going back to the Wigan line, I reckon it's 7 down, 93 to go...
Aren't there some dodgy BB ones that need to be replaced? Or did you see too many for that to be the explanation?

I had to "google map" that one

Great news
Did the link to a map I included with one of the photos not work?
Interesting to see signs of actual work on the Westhoughton line with bases appearing well beyond what would be required for the safety over-run at Lostock Junction. Many comments have been made about the timing of work for this line having been delayed and that therefore progress through Network Rail's GRIP process having been held back accordingly. Construction would imply the route now being at GRIP Stage 6 and effectively beyond the risk of cancellation. Any comments from anyone on the inside?

There is extended commentary associated with one shot.
At the presentation ten days ago (I asked if I could be sent the overheads, by the way) the Salford-Euxton Jct manager mentioned "May/June" for replacing the foot crossings with bridges. I attach the Bridgeoscope to remind people where they are.
