Farnworth North Junction, by Moses Gate will have been recovered.

South Junction by Kearsley to be recovered next weekend.

Line Speed will be reintroduced following next weekends possession.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does that mean? What has actually happened?

Temporary crossovers were put in place to allow single line working through Farnworth old-bore which also required weekend possessions. These new possessions will remove those crossovers or recover the rails etc. Hope this helps. :D

And they're needed for Bolton, if I remember Joseph Locke's comments.

The Kearsley end crossover is a 40mph layout destined for Bolton in 2017, the 30mph one from Moses Gate is going "elsewhere". We think this is the first time a layout has been specifically designed to be re-used in this way; quite a saving in materials!

I'm planning to go through at Warp Speed on Monday.

Maybe, just maybe it might be a bit like when I went to enormous trouble to manoeuvre wife and sons then aged 16 and 13 onto a Channel Tunnel train c1995 because I was very excited to be going through the Channel Tunnel and it would be great!

Er, it was dark.

It was a tunnel.

Hey, if you can't laugh at yourself it's a poor do.

I still admire the engineering at Folkestone and Farnworth.

A pint to whoever spots the first evidence of electrification works on our line "on the ground." I'm getting cold turkey....

It does, yes. Thank you. :D

Me too. It's a fantastic achievement. Would be nice to see NR getting some praise for it for a change instead of the constant gripes about not being able to sit down between Bolton and Manchester..

Residents local to Farnworth Station have received a letter telling them that works to carry out Ground Stabilisation will occur on Feb 3rd. from 2200 until Feb 4th. 0500. and again the following night. This will be using Road-Rail equipment to excavate and install steel pilings. This is to Stabilise the ground beneath Cemetery Road Bridge.

Please tell me that's tidying up the piling surrounding signal MP620.

Or you could laugh at the Japanese tourists taking pictures of themselves during the 20-minute tunnel transit.
I hate to think what it is like today with selfie sticks... ;)
I was one of the saddos who paid to travel on the 319s which ventured a few hundred metres into the tunnel in, I suppose, 1994.
Unfortunately not one of those much maligned units now in Northern service.

Travelled Southport to Man Vic and back via Bolton today.

1. Lots of kit and caboodle, much of which looks like drainage materials, on northern side of line from Lostock Jct to Ladybridge.

2. Lots of cabling materials, such as troughing, on the south side of the tracks.

3. Clobber next to track Bullfield Westish.

4. Superstructure going on the Interchange site at Bolton.

5. Lots of (mainly or entirely used) track panels and the like stacked east of the tracks in Moses Gate and Farnworth areas.

6. Southbound line speed (big, white & circular) read 75 but a yellow sign next to it went past too quickly to read, I judge (guess) we went through Farnworth Tunnel at 50mph, southbound the driver put his foot down as we passed Kearsley. Lack of joint sounds suggests both pairs of temporary points have been removed.

7. Lots of Orangemen beavering away in the fencing on Farnworth Station (Joe sent a note that he reckons they've nearly finished.)

8. Noticed lots of big white cubicles with fans at the end in the Manchester Exchange area. I haven't been keeping a count, but it seemed there were a lot more than before.

9. Orangemen conspicuous dotted all over the place Lostock to Man Vic, I imagine all doing prep work for electrification, track improvement and Ordsall Chord.

10. Manchester Exchange site shows remarkable change. As I have often experienced, foundations take ages, then superstructure goes up in a trice. Several storeys of a tall building now in place.

11. There is now a large crane on a building next to the tracks north of Man Vic. "Skyscraper City" really is looking to be the right name.

Photos later.

Have I missed something or have NR quietly de-scoped Farnworth tunnel?

Previously I read that, once finished, the tunnel's linespeed would be 100mph. Joseph Locke said so over a year ago, as did Rail Technology Magazine.

But the NR press release today says:
Follow up work due to take place this week will remove the final speed restriction meaning trains will be able to run through the tunnel at the original 75mph

Unless 75mph is the top speed of the DMUs and not the linespeed?

It may be that EMUs have a higher speed allowed due to decreased track wear?

Joseph_Locke explained in Post #2259:
75mph both ways until the full resignalling is completed, 2016-2017, then 100mph one way and 95mph the other through Farnworth Tunnel.

Mystery solved. I did do a quick google to check, but evidently too quick. Thanks.

PS: I forgot earlier, the track through the Farnworth single bore has been lifted.

At the Farnworth end there's still a bit of disconnected track heading towards the now-disused bore. A construction site barrier part way along its length prevented me from seeing whether it reaches as far as the tunnel mouth.

Any published information on what is intended at Euxton ?

One of the current oddities at Euxton is the way Up Slow trains on the WCML heading for Bolton find themselves on the Down Bolton for a spell before reaching the Up Bolton.
That can't do much for the capacity of the junction.

At the junction itself nothing changes (nothing visible anyway). The "relocation" of Friday St. GF crossover to be a new box-worked crossover at Buckshaw requires some alterations to the way the junction signal controls work.

There is a long-term (read dormant) plan to relay Euxton as a full parallel junction for Slows - Boltons, but this means some fairly major changes to the signalling back to Farington.

Yesterday, Feb 13th. I traveled through the Tunnel from Bolton on a 156. We entered at 69mph and reached 75mph by Kearsley Station. Later on the northbound return, again on a 156 we reduced speed from 70+mph before Kearsley down to 30mph through the Tunnel resuming normal speeds on the Bolton side.

The Northbound (down) service must've been following something, because the linespeed is now 75 through the tunnel on both lines.

As planned. The signalling won't support 100mph until after Bolton is remodelled and the rest of the signalling work is complete. This is 100% as planned from about two years ago. Lurpi's reference is to the final MU differential.

There is no conspiracy to de-scope phase 4. Yet.
