I went past the depot site yesterday. Certainly a hive of activity. Refuelling apron and canopy coming on apace. Various (small) buildings springing up all over the place.

One thing I did notice was that it looks like the two approach roads that serve the refuelling area have buffers very near the refuelling area itself, to form two short(ish) sidings.

Are these in use - they look connected? I sort of assume they are temporary stabling sidings that are used to clear platform 1 terminating trains from the down goods loop? and will be removed once the depot is open?

They are indeed in use and will connect up to the fuel point once its complete. At the moment both of the sidings are 4 car only.

Are these the ones shown as 'Banbury Depot Reception' on RTT (signal 7113)?

Heres the track diagram showing OL7113 signal. This signal controls the exit from the reception/ departure road.

This diagram shows the entrance to the depot complex which is not controlled by Network Rail. The spur that leads of is the start of the depot infrastructure.

Someone asked a while back about the type of point machine being used in the depot.

I took this photo during the blockade of BDA points (the points entering the depot between stop boards BD1 and BD2 on t_star2001uk's drawing)

It was at the time the only one in the UK, now there are 5 (all on this site).

I dont know who manufactures the actual machines but AFAIK the contraol and signalling system is manufactured by a company called Tiefenbach Control Systems Gmbh....

That's correct, the same system as at Wembley Depot.

The machine itself is manufactured by Wolber GmbH.

Hi,

Does anyone have an update on how the depot is coming along? I haven't been passed the site for a while.

Last time I went past (early April?) it was still very much at 'ground works' level. The sidings were there and it looked like the refuelling apron was being worked on, but couldn't make out what else was happening.

It's coming along nicely, sidings 1-4 are now open for stabling and the signalling system is up and running.

I sadly can't say much for the other disciplines or the status of the fuelling/cleaning facilities but I'm sure someone else will know.

afaik fuelling is taking place at Banbury, probably ahead of schedule because Wembley is running below capacity at the moment as one of the roads is out of use due to some structural issue with a retaining wall.

Thanks both.

I think I was expecting more progress, but then I remembered a plan that someone shared on this forum a little while ago showing the build phases. This does show the re-fuelling and stabling being the first to be provided, with the depot itself being the last to be built. So looks all as proposed on that.

Does anyone know the completion dates for all the various phases?

Am I right in thinking that there is pre-planning for a headshunt to the south of the depot? I see that sidings 1 and 2 are slewed at their southern ends to align with a possible alternative access/exit track to the south. The access at the moment, as it is being built, is all via as single pair of metals to the north - a pig if there is an incident on the points, for example. All those units bottled up!

There is a diagram further up the page which shows departure and reception roads.

There is a diagram further up the page which shows departure and reception roads.
The diagram doesn't show the depot roads, and it is numbers 1 and 2 within the depot that I'm asking about. That's the two roads (of four) nearest the main line, not the reception/departure road. In the video the aerial view quite clearly shows the ends of these otherwise dead streight tracks to be slewed to the east, as if to connect to a headshunt. The headshunt may be (will be, no doubt) an extension of the departure road catch points track. There is a little brown building as well, and that is "Slewed" as if to lie alongside the extended depot roads.
Wow! That is a lot of words to describe a simple thing. Forgive me, I feel like an advocate plodding his way to the truth!

Ah okay. I think I have a diagram at work - I'll see if I can dig it out.

From recollection the sidings don't connect to a headshunt.

These are two files showing the layout of the depot. The JPEG shows the phasing - I can't remember where I got this from. it was either posted on this forum or it may have been from the Cherwell District Council planning site. The Word document is a screen shot from the YouTube video link in one of the above posts.

I think the key one is the JPEG which seems to show the final layout.

The diagram in the Word document came from the YouTube video so I'm assuming that may be an interim stage?

Thanks Bunbury Blue. Informative. The phasing plan shows roads 1 and 2 coming together and becoming a headshunt, and the plan labels this bit "Headshunt plus wash facility". It's an early plan - one of the plans submitted to Cherwell D.C. I think - and a bit out of date, and what it shows maybe out of sync. The signalling diagram has no headshunt, nevertheless, Mi Lud, I submit that the work on the ground is plainly making provision for it in the future.

I thought this was the revised plan, as initially the depot was much simpler (I think this may be mentioned above somewhere). The original plans had no headshunt, there were 4 sidings, a single fuel road and the maintenance depot was 2 roads.

The word document is the signalling stage plan for the works that are currently being/are completed, which is effectively stage 2 on that pdf plan.

The next stage major stage is to add the headshunt, and the connection to the mainline from OL123/Departure Road, this is the area shown as Stage 4 on that pdf plan. There will be no washing facility here anymore, as it's now on Siding 4.

There is an additional stagework in between these two, to add a Depot Personnel Protection System (DPPS) to the Fuelling Apron and Washing Facility.

The four roads built so far are not the depot, they are the four planned stabling sidings. If the following image does not display right click the icon and select "Open image in new tab".
photo.php

The depot will be built under phase 2 in the land below these in the above picture dated 8th April 2017. If you look closely at the picture , near the white building in the car park at the left end of the yard, you can just the point work leading nowhere - this will be the line into the depot. All this can be ascertained by reading the latest information from the plans submitted to the council for approval.

So what is the point of the headshunt for sidings 1 and 2? Do these link into the depot departure and reception roads?

Walking across the old water works bridge earlier today and looking north there appears to be a new siding in the Network Rail compound the other side of the Tarmac and Breedon plants. I think there was talk before that there would be a siding there but then later not going ahead.

These are the sidings that you are thinking of, it's just that they weren't installed at the same time as the resignalling.

If the sidings by the above batching plants are Reservoir Sidings 3 and 4, (mentioned as not being reinstated a year ago in this thread):

http://www.railforums.co.uk/showpost.php?p=2750042&postcount=220

...then the current Modern Railways 'track watch' article describes them as being reinstated during April this year...

Thanks, I won't have to change the diagram again in this area. However I intend to include some more depot detail in a future update, once we're sure what the facilities are.

This may be a potentially really stupid question, but here goes...

Looking at the plans, for the depot entrance there is a reception road and a departure road. So, when all the depot works are complete, does this simply mean that trains arrive in the reception road, and depart from the departure road?

I think the naming is based on the intended routine usage: MOST units going onto the depot will terminate from the south in platform 1 and reverse into the depot direct from there via the reception with no conflict with other traffic, while trains going into service will most likely leave the depot via the departure, reverse at the depot junction south of the main to main crossovers, then proceed into 4 or 3 to reverse again and wait for southbound departure. As all the platforms and the depot connections are completely bidirectional, many other movement combinations are possible of course, and the two depot connections provide a level of redundancy too so there is back up in the event of a points failure at one of them, or a unit failure or derailment traversing one.
