A quick change of plan was needed.

For some reason I had this written down as "Saturday 4th September" but have just noticed that the day after is "Sunday 4th September"!

Saturday 3rd September 1988
In this timetable there was a SO diagram that was not only a different day out but had some very rare track for a 47 in it as well. Earlier in the year 47316 had done the diagram but there were not-to-be-missed other large 47s out as well (see post #6883). However today we had a 47/3 on the diagram and not a lot else out, so it was time to go for it ...

47353 1O06 Nuneaton-Poole (via Reading W Curve)

Time for a magical mystery tour of SW London!

47353 1M93 Poole-Mitre Bridge Junction (via Basingstoke, Woking, Byfleet Jc, Chertsey, Staines, Putney, Clapham Junction North Side, Ludgate Jc, Latchmere SW Jc and Kensington Olympia)

All of Byfleet Junction to Latchmere SW Junction was new for a 47 for me.

OK, so this is a bit tenuous. We went on a family holiday to Cornwall. I definitely missed the start of school, so I think this is the day we traveled down. We changed trains at New St, so I am guessing we took the Newcastle - Poole to there. Going forward, perhaps we took 1V82, the 10:24 Man Pic - Penzance. If we did, then I would be able to record the following:

1054 "Western Governor" Plymouth - St Erth

Perhaps!

This was the last year I was eligible for a Young Persons railcard so I decided to get my only 7 day All Line Rover before having to pay full fare.
Back then it cost £132 with a railcard. Today it would cost £416.25 with a railcard and there are more restrictions on travel now.

Day 1
47976 1F04 0601 Bedford - Derby (from Leicester)
47971 2D64 0811 Derby - Llandudno (to Crewe)
86255 1S59 0735 Euston - Inverness (Crewe to Preston) 'The Clansman'
86401 1O12 0815 Glasgow Cen - Poole (Preston to Wigan NW) 'The Wessex Scot'
I then took a 142 to Liverpool and a 508 to Southport with the aim of taking the 1440 Southport to Manchester Vic.
The Loco Hauled Travel and 1HXX books were no longer being produced so I was relying on loco hauled diagrams from Rail magazine!
The 1440 was not loco hauled so off to Manchester on a 150 for the evening loco hauled to Blackpool.

37415 1N99 1714 Manchester Vic - Blackpool North
37415 2F38 1900 Blackpool North - Liverpool LS (to Edge Hill)
304 to Crewe for a 150 to Shrewsbury via Chester & Wrexham.

Saturday 7th September 1991

Day 2 - An early morning run on the Cambrian before heading to Scotland via London and the ECML.
37418 1J11 0450 Shrewsbury - Machynlleth
37418 2J19 0816 Machynlleth - Aberystwyth
37418 2G68 0925 Aberystwyth - Wolverhampton
86226 1A?? 1255 Wolverhampton - Euston
91009 1S?? 1700 Kings Cross - Edinburgh W
158 2230 Edinburgh W - Glasgow Queen St
158 2350 Glasgow Queen St - Inverness
It was hard to sleep on the 158 and how I longed for the loco hauled comfort of previous years!

So, if I remember correctly, the Sheffield-Manchester and return part of the Harwich was meant to be a no-heat 47, hence us going to Manchester. However, for some bizarre reason (or more likely it was fixed), Sheffield decided 45062 would be a far better idea, which it wasn't, as it failed half way across the Pennines and was rescued by a 31. Meanwhile, LMR control decided that they would now use the 47/4 for the return Harwich that was supposed to do 1V13 to Swansea. So they needed to find something for 1V13, and naturally they had a spare Thornaby 47/3 lying about, as you do...

During the summer months if the Doncaster Works Test Train was unavailable then the 0848 Doncaster-Edinburgh service would be used to test ex-works locos. Today 31226 was on test accompanied by 40197. The use of LMR based 47/4s on Kings Cross services was probably down to low availability of ER locos.

Apologies for another very belated response (I've been doing some research on Summer 78 workings). On 04/08/78 you have 55012 as 14.13 Yk - KX/ Might this have been 55009 by any chance? Thanks again

Yes you are correct, I did travel with 55009 and not 55012 on 4/8/78. Cheers

By this time in 1988 (47373 and its Immingham friends had done the Nuneaton-Skeg for most of the year, clearly they'd run out of FPLI pool 47s today) we were well aware that simply escaping the place was the best plan. The standard move was to Boston for the pubs and then back to Skeg for the evening return. However today something better was on offer.

On this rover I had travelled 5040 miles of which 4407 was loco hauled by classes 20,33,37,47,50,73,86,87,90 & 91. Having read this forum thread I do wonder what I would have done if I was 10 years older. An All Line Rover in September 81 could have included Deltics on the ECML, 40s on the North Wales Coast, 25s on the Cambrian, 26s and 27s in Scotland and so much more. I would have been spoilt for choice. Looking back though I did still have a good selection of loco hauled opportunities to go for in 91. Today you only have 67, 68 and 91 loco hauled services with 66, 73 & 92 on the sleepers!

I wouldn't exactly claim I'm lucky to be at least 10 years older than you, but I did a few ALRs during the early eighties and it did seem much richer pickings back then than you seem to have had just 10 years later. I'll need to do some sums on mileages for a loco hauled comparison, but in 1981, my ALR haulage would have been behind classes 20, 25, 26, 27, 31, 33, 37, 40, 43, 45, 46, 47, 50, 55, 56, 73, 81, 82, 83, 85, 86 and 87 with an APT thrown in for novelty value.

I pity the modern active rail enthusiast in many ways.......you basically have to be a unit enthusiast these days.......and i'd rather eat my own excrement!

I travel frequently on the WCML and have done so for years. I could quite possibly have cleared my 390s for haulage, but the truth is I have absolutely no idea, because I've never even looked at their numbers......

If I'd gone to Norwich and back with 003 this day I'd have cleared it for 1000 a year later. I presume I was a bit skint and so this was a "just in case for some reason the Heart of England isn't valid to Norwich like it is usually" day.

Operation "if you think we're staying in Skegness for 8 hours you've got another think coming, we're off to Boston which has fewer d***heads and more decent beer pubs (one of which does really good food)" was fully in swing by this point.

I travel frequently on the WCML and have done so for years. I could quite possibly have cleared my 390s for haulage, but the truth is I have absolutely no idea, because I've never even looked at their numbers......
I actually do record unit numbers, mainly for something to do when I'm commuting on the ECML. I've had 63 out of the 65 Azumas (and all the TPE 802s) and I've cleared 801208 and 801228 for 1000. I don't really have a sense of achievement about this :)

I do too, for the same reason, and (even worse) deliberately try to travel in 'new' vehicles. While it does keep an interest in rail travel going, it is definitely not the same as, for example, my first Scottish Region Railrover in 1979!

That's fair enough, and I realise I'm probably the outlier here, especially on this site, and in this particular thread! :D

I think I'm still just a bit bitter, as it was units (HSTs & 158s mostly) that killed off my rail enthusiasm in about 1985 or so by gradually replacing all the loco hauled services on just about all my favourite routes.

When I do the Cally sleeper I make a special point of checking the loco at both ends of the journey though.....and I've cleared that 92 pool! ;)

Anyhoo......back to more joyous times .....Sulzers around the Kingdom of Fife :D
