I went to see a concert at the Manchester Apollo, I think it was to see Madness. The only way to return from Manchester then was to go out to Stockport and return to York on the Shrewsbury Mail Train.

Deltic 22 had just returned to service following an altercation with Deltic 21 at Finsbury Park in early September. No 22 came off worse with a damaged buffer beam and it was despatched to Stratford Works. It was here that 22 was prepared for the final series of railtours receiving its original D9000 identity. As a railtour loco it became quite rare for it to work scheduled services so I followed it as far as I could to Peterborough.

Around this time we started to get information that some of the 47401-420 "Generator" locomotives that were overdue for overhaul would be withdrawn soon to provide spares for the others. The likely suspects, we were told, were 405, 408 and 414. Therefore trying to get them all for 1,000 miles became a priority. I had a significant amount off 408, but 405 and 414 were looking a bit flaky. So getting information on them became necessary...

Today transpired to be my last two journeys with Deltic 4. One of its power units was exceedingly noisy, yes even more than usual! It performed faultlessly on its return trip between Edinburgh and York but I feared something was not quite right. Three days later the power unit failed and it worked its last train the following day. After my final journey with Deltic 4 I had a short trip to Kinghorn picking up a required 27. I then travelled to Kings Cross with Deltic 13. At Newcastle 45005 was utilised to drag the train across the High Level Bridge before No 13 could resume its duties to London. King Edward Bridge had been closed due to engineering work.

This was meant to be a sponsored 24 hour Track/Station Bash in support of the Class Forty Preservation Society. I cannot remember the actual rules but we were paired into teams with the objective of passing through as many stations and attaining as much mileage as possible. We were constrained by the boundaries of a Yorkshire Ranger Ticket which was all stations in Yorkshire plus the stations between Darlington to Middlesbrough and Doncaster to Cleethorpes. I think we got a point for each mile travelled and each station we passed through but zero points for stations and route miles already travelled along. There were about ten of us as we all started out from York on the stroke of midnight. Me and my team mate thought we had a good plan but it would involve a lot of time spent travelling by DMU. By 6pm I think our next destination was going to be Scarborough and getting a little fed up we called it a day. We were the only team to finish as a pair so we claimed the winners prize. I also cannot remember how much we raised in our efforts for the CFPS.

Deltic 11 had been operating on one engine since the end of September being used on menial duties. I knew that it had been allocated to the 2130 Newcastle-Darlington service so I headed off to Newcastle by HST. The preferred move would have been by the Deltic hauled Plymouth-Edinburgh service only today it wasn’t! The 2130 service had sleeping cars running via Sunderland, Billingham and Hartlepool. At Darlington the sleeping cars were attached to the 2255 Newcastle-KX.

They were standard Mark 1 sets (not push-pull). IIRC the 1553 EC-EG returned with the same loco as a 16xx EG-London Bridge, with the stock then forming the 1821 LB-EG. The other sets were worked in from Selhurst with the each 33 dropping onto the next service. I believe all services returned empty stock to Selhurst. A similar arrangement occurred in a morning.

Out of interest, how many 47s have you managed to clear?

I just wrote a whole load of calculations here and managed to forget (a) the push-pull 47/7s, and (b) when I added the 47/7s, I was counting some twice because I'd cleared them as 47/4s.

Let's try again.

All of the "original" 401-665 series apart from
(a) 405, 428, 430, 464, 486, 567, 574, 576, 579, 585, 609, 615, 621, 630, 637, 645, 649, 660, 661.
(b) not cleared as 47/4s or 47/7s - 493 (701), 504 (702), 495 (704), 494 (706), 516 (708), 499 (709), 496 (710), 498 (711), 502 (715), 507 (716). Cleared the other 7 either as /4s or as /7s.

That, I think, is 234, unless someone knows different. 401-665 = 265, subtract 19 I didn't clear, subtract the 10 47/7s, and there was no 47548 or (ETH) 47601.

Also cleared - 47004, 47010, 47109, 47110, 47189, 47206, 47209, 47373.

So I *think* the total is 242.

When I worked on the Southern the empty stock worked to and from New Cross Gate carriage sidings.

Thinking about it a little more I am sure that you are correct. It’s quite some time ago and I probably assumed that they worked in from Selhurst as I would pass the empty stock of the 1553 East Croydon waiting to be platformed as I travelled between Norwood Junction and East Croydon.

I was on that ADEX too, #2026 refers.
Are you sure about the outward route? I had it recorded as running via Leeds then ECML to Finsbury Park, Canonbury, round the loop at Stratford, then westbound along the North London Line and onto the Southern (where I have no route details at all). The return route was notable for being entirely different, in that we went MML instead of ECML, and the (unscheduled) loco change at Leicester was because the boiler had failed on 47255.
Incidentally I was very disappointed by having 47255 on the train in the first place, as I had only scored it new for haulage a couple of months prior when it did a special to Darlington for the S&D 150 at Shildon.

I am 100% sure of the routing. I still remember passing Toton, Brent Jcn, Clapham Jcn and Stewarts Lane. I still have my spotting notes including the locations where I saw each loco. The return journey followed the same route as the outward.
I was also disappointed with having 47255, one of my first dud Duffs! I must have been on the same train as you to Darlington travelling to the 150 Anniversary Celebration.

Did you ever go to Southend; I did via Canonbury & Stratford?

The sets were 8 cars, mostly mark I TSOs, but I think the first class was a Mark II FK. They lived at New Cross Gate not Selhurst.

Yes the East Croydon-East Grinstead returned as an East Grinstead-London Bridge to form the last London-Bridge East Grinstead. The was no run round at the London Bridge end, the trains usually arriving and departing in platform 7 or 8.

The last London Bridge-East Grinstead was usually a "Slim Jim".

Without getting a calculator out (or doing something that I've been meaning to do for a long time and transcribing my mileage books into a spreadsheet), no.

I would estimate, however (and it's very much an estimate) that it's somewhere between 500 and 600K.

At some point 1E94 swept past going north, with a silver roof and "that didn't have an ETH box!"

Of course, being a Saturday Gateshead had plenty of ETH locomotives, but as per usual they didn't want to lose one. 097 was somewhat disappointing considering what a silver-roofed non-ETH example could have been, but you can't complain.
