45107 York-Newcastle (1608 Bristol TM-Newcastle)

Saturday 31st October 1981

Unbeknown to me Deltic 14 suffered a boiler failure shortly after its departure from Kings Cross. At Peterborough 31270 was added to provide train heating and at York both locos were removed in favour of 47416! It ended up being my last run with No 14, even though it was back out in service by eight that morning it succumbed less than two weeks later with a traction motor defect. I was now stranded in Scotland with no Deltics present to work the final loco hauled Edinburgh-Plymouth service. I initially thought about spending the day sampling the loco hauled Edinburgh-Dundee services but by mid morning I gave up and decided to head back south via Carlisle. I’m not sure if this was the best move because it was 1630 by the time I managed to reach Doncaster and the possibility of some Deltic haulage. My first available train, the 1403 KX-York, arrived late with 31186 hauling a set of MkI coaches. When I arrived into York I was completely fed up with my day and I almost went home. However, the 31 was despatched to York depot and in its place Deltic 8, still operating on one engine, was provided for the return journey to Kings Cross. Only15 hours between Deltics!

By coincidence, I should be arriving in the Great Western in the next few minutes. Things may get a bit random this afternoon...

How did it go? Was the Town Crier still on?
I didn't notice. Sorry.
I had a couple of different bitters, with fish, chips and peas. Others in my group had faggots. Not to my taste, ta very much.
A good get together with former RfD colleagues. Very appropriate for this thread.

Yes I go there with former colleagues too. And it’s always Batham’s!

I think I mentioned a few posts back that 47s north of York were a bit scarce - or irritatingly one-way at various times of the day - about this time so we ended up getting some serious Class 43 mileage in.
On this day, the plan was 47458 back south to York, but 458 was brand spanking new out of heavy general overhaul from Crewe, and Gateshead wanted to keep their shiny toy and sent out a 16-wheeler on 1M32, resulting in this immensely messy move.

I vaguely remember this journey to the West Country being done on a Kellogg’s cereal promotion. I think you had to collect several vouchers from packets of Corn Flakes, pay £5 or £10, I can’t quite remember and then you could have a return trip between any two stations. I picked up one of my last 50s for haulage, my first in the large logo livery. 50042 worked the Up Midnight, however it stalled on Largin Bank. Assistance came in the shape of 47220 which helped push the train to Plymouth. Logic would assume that 50042 should be replaced, but it wasn’t.

This was my last run with Deltic 11, it worked its final service on the following Friday. It had been operating on one engine since the end of September and was waiting for a replacement power unit that never came. Instead it was used to donate its working power unit to Deltic 22 which was having its own problems. At Newcastle I spent the morning travelling on the Tyne & Wear metro which had recently opened. With little else to do I went to Darlington for a few beers (The Ostler) before continuing to York. The 1550 to KX was a Duff which I took to Doncaster so that I could have Deltic 2, now quite rare on a service train to York.

The next morning I got a lift into town and our car got t-boned by a van. My driver ended up in hospital for a week (she doesn't remember to this day a thing about the accident) and I broke my ankle as well as a number of minor injuries (I've still got the scar on the side of my head caused by a bit of flying glass). Which was very annoying as I'd just bought a new week's Ranger ticket the previous day. So that's the end of 1986 for a bit :)

Day off work, some sort of ticket offer going on, decided to go to Bournemouth with the green loco. Could have gone to Poole, but Bournemouth had food and beer.

Having required the assistance of 47220 between Largin Bank and Plymouth on the journey from Penzance, 50042 remained on the train at Plymouth with 50036 added to provide assistance over the Devon banks. With a pair of fifties the train didn’t even get as far as Hemerdon before it stalled again. Another class 47 or probably 47220 again pushed the train onto Totnes where the pair of fifties continued to Exeter. 50042 was deemed fit to continue with the train solo, which it did without further ado to Paddington.

Deltic 16 had spent several months out of service in Doncaster Works. I was desperate to get some mileage out of it so I headed off to Edinburgh. I am not sure why I had to return home with a Duff.

Rail conditioning by a train’s consist allows a loco in rear to put more power down on slippery rails than one on the front can.

GWR’s power cars had a mod in their final years to switch off the last notch on the leading power car to take advantage of that.

A day spent on Chesterfield/Sheffield/Rotherham axis where new engines were plentiful for me. The most unusual working of the day was a Class31/37 combo on the Harwich Boat Train. Waiting for this service at Chesterfield could be a little tense, with the hope that the train would produce a 37 rather than a 47. If the train announcer said that the service was on time there was a high likelihood that it would be a class 47. If the train was announced as a few minutes late there was a good chance that a 37 would be on the train. Today the train was announced as being on time so I was expecting the worst. However I was astonished, as a Class 31 came into view only then to realise that it’s on-time efforts were with the assistance of a class 37.

This was a spotting trip to various depots around London. One of the few memories I have of the day was seeing a class 31 at Moorgate tube station. IIRC this was the final day of loco hauled services via the Widened Lines.

By November 81 it was getting a little more difficult to follow the Deltics so my strategy was to find one and stick with it to its destination. I took Deltic 21 to Kings Cross knowing that I would be in the best place to cover any further Deltic services. I didn’t have to wait too long before Deltic 2 was attached to the Night Aberdonian sleeper. There was one problem taking this train, that being No 2 was booked to work a railtour after its arrival into Edinburgh and I could get stranded in Scotland. As No 2 was one of the four “Railtour Deltics” it had become quite difficult to travel behind on service trains so bearing this in mind I followed it to Edinburgh.

I couldn't find a single thing for 5th November either (I am missing a couple of year's moves books - notably 1983 and 1989 - at the moment though, as we've moved house and a lot of stuff is still in boxes). I did have 802206 from Darlington to Newcastle last night, but I don't think that counts as "back in the day"!

And for November 6th, I've got very little either. A positioning move for a railtour the next day, basically!

55019 York-Kings Cross (1955 York-Kings Cross)

Saturday 7th November 1981

After Deltic 2 was removed from my overnight train at Edinburgh I continued to Dundee with the expected Duff. I spent the rest of the morning travelling on the Edinburgh-Dundee loco hauled circuit before heading into Edinburgh and hopefully making an exit with a Deltic. Thankfully Deltics 15 & 21 were both on Haymarket so I thought that I would be able to follow one on an overnight service south. No 21 was the first to leave the Scottish Capital but this was by the 1718 stopping service to Newcastle. The loco off this train would frequently go onto work the 2030/2100 Newcastle-KX. I took No 21 to Newcastle but was disappointed to find out that it had not been booked to work onto Kings Cross. A bigger disappointment was the fact that Deltic 15 was following on the Sleeper Only service from Edinburgh. I could travel back to Edinburgh with Deltic 10 but I would then be left stranded again in Scotland. There was however a potential escape route. I found out from a couple of Forty bashers that the West Coast overnight services were being diverted via the Settle & Carlisle and there was a very good chance that a Class 40 would work one of them. I thought that I had little to lose, plus I would be in London in good time to catch the 1005 KX-York. I headed off to Carlisle with high expectations.

At Carlisle my high expectations of seeing a Class 40 waiting to take an overnight service south were shattered when a line of 47/4s greeted my arrival. I picked the next service and headed to Euston. For reasons unknown to me the train encountered some problems on its journey south, meaning my arrival into Euston was sufficiently late that I missed the 1005 to York. It was hauled by Deltic 2 which I never had again and to make matters worse the two other daytime services from KX to York were allocated to Duffs. I decided to take a large detour home, mostly with Class 50s.

No move, but my book notes that all three main Pennine 47 diagrams that day were "(expletive deleted) (derogatory word for Class 45)", so I presume I went home in disgust.
RailGen Archive suggests that 403 later did 1M32, but there wouldn't have been a move off it anyway except to come back north via HST!

Having travelled up to London with Deltic 2, I was expecting to return north either with the 1205 to Hull or 1220 to York. The 1205 produced a Duff which wasn’t a problem because Deltic 14 was already being coupled up to the 1220 to York. There was an issue however with No 14, after a short delay it was declared a failure and the train was cancelled. I had to wait for the 1405 service to York with Deltic 21 before I could head back north. With the 1220 service being cancelled it seemed that the return working, the 1550 York-KX would be cancelled too. However a scratch set of Mark Is were found, and together with en ex-works Deltic 17, worked the service. I took this from Doncaster to Grantham before returning to York with Deltic 22. I thought my day was done when I headed home about 8, but I was persuaded to return to cover the overnight services to Edinburgh which were to be diverted via an unusual route.

There were two loco-hauled Newcastle-KX trains on a Sunday afternoon in this timetable (I think they were technically additionals but they ran every week without fail), which made a handy beer move in York if you couldn't be bothered to go out earlier (or were too hung over). Again this is the only move I can find for this date, clearly November was often a quiet time!

The additionals were also an excellent way to travel to London in MkI comfort, as they made the northbound ECML sleepers at Peterborough or KX, and also the Down Midnight if you preferred. Here is 431 on 1A87 on 17/11/85, I was waiting for 413 on 1A88 behind.
