I visited Shildon to watch the 150th Anniversary cavalcade; its hard to believe that we are now almost at the 200th Anniversary.
And what a glorious sunny Sunday afternoon it was for viewing and photographing the cavalcade of 30 plus steam locos 49 years ago today. I was by the lineside between Shildon and Heighington, along with thousands of others, and then went to Darlington to see the large gathering of locos in the north sidings after the cavalcade had ended. Some left under their own steam that evening, but the majority stayed overnight and left the following day. An event which unfortunately will never be equaled!

Spent a day photographing around York, but had to have a trip out in the evening when YK chucked a new 40 out for M74.

A favourite evening bash for me, including a fish supper. You could take the Hull-Leeds service into Leeds for a plus 2 onto the chariot to York or alternatively, you could leap at Cross Gates and visit the chippy adjacent to the station. Tonight the chippy was waiting for me!

Baling for the fish and chips sounds like a better move than relying on a Goyle to reach Leeds in time for a plus two!

My only Goyle into Leeds: 1984. The 31 failed near Dent, so Holbeck sent out a Rat for rescue. Two hours'wait, in a cosy Mk1 compartment; and the throatiest 25 I have ever heard...
Suspect that rat may have come from Skipton....and if it was one of several old hand Skipton drivers that I had the privilege of working alongside in the early 'nineties, it would have been full throttle all the way, including downhill. They would have needed to be in the LMS club before closing time! ;)

Ah, Skipton. That might explain the length of our wait in Dent Head's lashing rain and howling wind. :) I recall Holbeck had an allocation of 25s - I didn't know Skipton had some in 1984.

Yes - the Rat's driver had the handle wide open, for the entire journey to Leeds. My teen self was highly impressed - all the Rats on the south WCML did little more than burbling. :D

It certainly made up for our disappointment at Carlisle, when our hoped-for Whistler over the S&C didn't happen.
(frustratingly, two 40s were idling on Carlisle's southern side...)

This thread is littered with accounts of Goyles failing to reach their intended destination.

I wonder why that should be? ;)

My experience of a 31 in Leeds was more dramatic. After a B&B in York on the Saturday night, I caught 31207+31285 on 1040 York-Carlisle. On the viaduct on the approach to Leeds one of the pair caught fire. After a very long delay 47560 came to drag us into the platform. I was going for 45026 on 1130 Leeds-Cardiff, luckily this was ECS from Neville Hill so trapped behind us.

Happy days! Good that you still snared Peak 026. 8-)
I've only had one loco go "flambé": 1990, 47541 "The Queen Mother" arrived into Stirling, flames & thick smoke belching out of the cantrail vents.
Our planned trip to the Far North lines, didn't happen on that day; but we did get an RfD duff drag 541 and our train all the way to Inverness, in glorious August sun.

The 25s were allocated to Holbeck....but a few were outbased at Skipton traincrew depot for the Rylstone stone trains (in pairs) and local trip freight and engineering trains.

Makes sense now - many thanks. My grey cells are happily remembering the outrageous racket, echoing in the dark landscape, as the Rat's driver used full-bore all the way. :)

Didn't overlap with any of those 40 moves this week, but...

Anyway, this day just about sums up summer 1982 perfectly. 100% 40s on the North Wales Coast starting and ending with The Bangor... 386.5 miles.

40025 WBQ to Prestatyn, 1D34 07.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40035 Prestatyn to WBQ, 1E86 09.00 Llandudno to York
40106 WBQ to Rhyl, 1D29 10.45 Man Vic to Holyhead
40025 Rhyl to Man Vic, 1J30 11.57 Bangor to Man Vic
40025 Man Vic to Rhyl, 1D21 15.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40191 Rhyl to Chester, Return Mystex Rhyl to Glasgow
40049 Chester to Rhyl, 1D65 17.45 Man Vic to Llandudno Junc
40025 Rhyl to WBQ, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic.

Ah, what a day.

Rhyl seemed to be the destination of choice today!

My plan for today was to travel along the closure threatened line between March & Spalding. In order to cover the Yarmouth-Newcastle, my preferred train, meant getting the early morning service from Peterborough and connecting into the 0400 Liverpool St-Norwich at Ely. The loco for the first part of my journey from Norwich was disappointing but at Grassmoor Junction I was very pleased to see 37072 take charge. Once back at York I was able to resume my Deltic travels.

The time I did this to cover the line was also on the Yarmouth-Newcastle during an all-line that I did with my Dad during May 1980. We arrived at Norwich to find that the booked loco (which I believe from memory was 37110, but don't quote me on this) had collapsed, and so 47184 was nicked from its GE duties to do the train to Grassmoor. There, an excellent 40038 was provided to continue the journey.

Thanks to a family holiday I did the Newcastle-Yarmouth and Yarmouth-Newcastle throughout, thereby getting the line in the book, before I had a book.

I presume that was 24/5/80 when I joined the train at Selby. Post #5666 has the details of my day.

We did 40038 to Newcastle and then if I remember another 40 (I don't have my 1980 book to hand at the moment, we've just moved house, but I remember the Yarmouth-Newcastle trip!) to Edinburgh where we stayed the night.

After taking a required Duff to Leeds, I found myself with a bit of time on my hands. I took a unit to Bradford to view the 2120 service to KX. I presume this must have been a dud 31 so I returned to Leeds and onto Garforth to sample the Hull Leeds service; another dud 31. I finally get a required 31 when 31320 takes the Bradford-KX service forward from Leeds.
