IIRC I was travelling on a 3D ticket, this allowed 3 day return trips to a selection of destinations within a 7 day period. Day one’s destination, Carlisle.

DMU York-Leeds (0703 Scarborough-Leeds)
DMU Leeds-Manchester Vic (0740 Hull-Liverpool LS)
40090 Manchester Vic-Warrington BQ (1020 Manchester Vic-Holyhead)
87019 Warrington BQ-Carlisle (1005 Birmingham NS-Glasgow C)
45036 Carlisle-Leeds (1610 Glasgow C-Nottingham)
DMU Leeds-York (1957 Manchester Vic-York)

Saturday 26th August 1978

I was travelling with a friend and the plan was to take the 0114 Milford Haven as far as Carmarthen and then return to Swansea by DMU. I believe we must have both been asleep when we arrived at Carmarthen where we had to quickly gather our possessions before getting off the train. As 37185 was released from the train giving way to 37190 I nipped off to the loo. I was only gone a couple of minutes and when I returned I walked up to the front of the train to watch 37190 couple up. There was no sign of my friend, I assumed he’d wandered down to the other end of the platform to watch the other 37. The train departed and there was still no sign of my friend other than his bag sat next to mine on a bench. I realised that he must have mistakenly got back onto the train and I was now left with his bag, wallet and ticket! I quickly worked out that he couldn’t get back to Carmarthen until about 8-30 on the first train from Milford, so I took the DMU to Llanelli to pick up the sleeper service from Paddington. I took this train to Whitland where I found my very relieved friend. He couldn’t remember getting back on the train at Carmarthen and the guard told him to leave the train at Whitland when he couldn’t produce a ticket or the means to purchase one. We worked our way to London and then down the MML to Derby. Here we took 25124 to Nottingham expecting to return with a pair of 25s on the Yarmouth-Derby. Not today, problems with the 25s so unfortunately 46004 did the honours.

In the days before the Humber Bridge there was a ferry service linking Hull to New Holland. This was the first of several trips for me across the Humber. However it wasn’t without potential problems as the ferry grounded itself on a sandbank. After several minutes of the boat thrashing around in the water and going nowhere I was beginning to think that I was going to miss out with 37040 on a Cleethorpes-Sheffield service. Fortunately the tide soon shifted the boat free and I was able to continue my journey. The drama didn’t finish there because the driver of 37040 took a wrong signal at Doncaster which routed the train into one of the bay platforms. I didn’t hang around to see how this issue was resolved because I headed off back home to York.

Correct me if I'm am wrong, I am getting a vibe that you might be a Deltic fan (sarcasm).

If its not requiring top level security clearance would you kindly post a list of the mileage totals for each Deltic you have? I am just curious.

Nice photo! Can't work out where Lottie is....or your wife. Should have gone to Specsavers! (There was a guy from Barnard Castle in the pub last night! - sorry, O/T!)

Ah yes....further away from the loco than I had imagined! How many steam locos has Lottie red penned now?
Three steam, one diesel. That's more than I'd managed by 8 months old!

It seems strange to be asked that question because during my days bashing Deltics I was only ever once asked a similar question. Anyway I travelled just short of 150,000 miles ranging between 0 and 16,000 miles between each of them.
I will post my mileages once I have had chance locate my mileage spreadsheet which is on an old PC

I look forward to seeing how many more days you were able to use it!
Although it was quite easy to use the ticket for more than three return trips, my biggest problem would’ve been trying to explain to my Mum how I was funding these supplementary days out!

Summer Saturday. North Wales Coast. It would be rude not to...

40106 WBQ to Rhyl, 1D34 07.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40092 Rhyl to Chester, 1E86 09.00 Llandudno to York
Unit to Helsby
40167 Helsby to Chester, 1D35 09.45 Man Vic to Bangor
Failed, so...
40008 Chester to Flint, 1D35 09.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40184 Flint to Prestatyn, 1D29 10.45 Man Vic to Holyhead
40027 Prestatyn to Llandudno Junc, 1M71 09.00 York to Llandudno
40162 Llandudno Junc to Crewe, 1A56 12.59 Holyhead to Euston
40085 Crewe to Chester, 1D60 14.00 Euston to Holyhead
40184 Chester to Newton-Le-Willows, 1J53 15.17 Holyhead to Man Vic
40008 Newton-le-Willows to Prestatyn, 1D65 Man Vic to Llandudno Junc
40106 Prestatyn to WBQ, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic

A truly crazy day. There were so many 40s out on passenger workings and I didn't even have all of those on the coast. Looking at Motherlist, there were 40s on the Manchester to Skeg and the Manchester to Yarmouth, the Blackpool to Newcastle and the Newcastle to Blackpool (2 different 40s), Manchester to Scarborough and back (one diagram), Scarborough to Newcastle and York to Man Vic (one diagram), Blackpool to Man Vic and Blackpool portions, 012 went Scarborough to King's Cross (!) and Kings Cross to Newcastle, 033 went Aberdeen to Inverness and back, then to Newcastle having worked up from Newcastle the previous night(!!!), another on Leeds to Blackpool and return (one diagram), one on Carstairs portion.

What on earth was going on? Did all the controllers decide to break a record? I can't imagine as many 40s worked as many passenger trains on a single day ever again.

Magical day...

And in the mayhem in West Yorkshire we missed 40092 by a minute, and I never had another chance at it. Whilst my list of Class 40 haulages was never anything near many other people (I had 129 of them) that one was annoying!

I was planning to go to Edinburgh on my favoured train 2015 KX-Edinburgh and was pleased to see 55014 bringing it into York just after midnight. However with it being the beginning of a Bank Holiday weekend the train was wedged! Knowing that there were a couple of relief services heading north I reluctantly decided to turn Deltic 14 down. After a couple of hours the first relief train arrived with 40167 and being relatively empty I decided to take this north. I then spent the rest of the day following Deltic 14 to Scarborough, back to Edinburgh and finally to Newcastle via Carlisle. I had to leave Deltic 14 at Newcastle because I was planning to take an excursion to Whitby. Just five hours to fester there!

Summer Sundays on the North Wales Coast were not quite as good as Saturdays back in 1982 but they weren't too bad...well, after a disappointing start on one of the bankers.

I don't remember if the move to Preston was for a 40 that didn't turn up or just cos I couldn't be bothered going home early.

A little bit of a novelty day out on excursion to Whitby with Deltic 2. The train was for normal punters as well as enthusiasts. Before heading back from Whitby around 1730 the loco and stock did a fill in move to Middlesbrough and back. I decided to leave the train at Middlesbrough heading onto Darlington to find out was being offered out on the ECML. I quickly picked up Deltic 10 before returning back to Edinburgh with Deltic 22.

Another visit to the NYMR; I have vague recollections of cycling between Malton and Pickering on this day.

I visited Shildon to watch the 150th Anniversary cavalcade; its hard to believe that we are now almost at the 200th Anniversary.

After having had a relatively early finish on the Saturday I was eager to get out early on Sunday morning. The first opportunity for a Deltic was the 1143 to KX. Alternatively I could head to Doncaster for the 0830 Hull-KX, but to do this I needed to travel via Leeds. Sunday morning services could be a little thin on the ground back in the day!

By 1987 my trips out had become a bit of a rarity. Todays trip to Stafford was more in the search for beer, I remember visiting a good pub close to the station, the name of it escapes me and I believe it may now be closed.

The guard complained that the aircons that were unusually in the formation were too hot and we needed an ETH locomotive. It was a 50. But no worries...
