No. I missed 47208, 47282, 47291 and 47325, having 504 in total.
Still pretty impressive. 47208 is a bit surprising, as it was a Scottish boilered loco, which did a fair amount of passenger work.
Not my favoured form of traction, but "chapeau" indeed.

It was the 5th one to be withdrawn. It was the one involved in the collision near Dundee in 1980/81.

The accident was on 22/10/79. 47208 was hauling the 0935 Queen Street-Aberdeen and ran into the back of the 0844 Queen Street-Dundee between Perth and Dundee.

Yep. I am old enough for it to have been underlined in my spotting book (I saw it at King's Cross in 1978) but never got a chance to be hauled by it as far as I know.

My first ever visit to Inverness was on 09/08/77 - see post #1468.
47208 - which I required for haulage - was the loco involved. I was disappointed, as I was hoping for a class 40, but it wasn't a bad way to experience the Highland Main Line for the first time.

First a correction to post #29. The date at the start of the post should have read Wednesday 20 August 1980 (not 21st).

After a Summer Saturday spent on the North Wales Coast chasing class 40s it was off to South Wales track bashing to scoop in the Swansea and Carmarthen avoiding lines and the line to Fishguard Harbour.

and enough of the dross. It was back to Scotland for some more rateable haulages.

Thanks for the reminder. More recently I recall 47829 being painted in a similar livery. Do you know if that was for a similar event?

No, 47829 was painted as part of a BTP initiative which attempted to deter trespass and vandalism on the railway. Sometimes so-called 'Q Trains' were run which often featured a light loco travelling round the network, I believe with BTP in the cab, in the hope of catching miscreants in the act. This initiative may have come about after an increase in the number of incidents of cable theft, as I recall.

Hi QJ. Sorry I can't follow the "correction" reference as post #29 doesn't seem to be yours or relate to Aug 1980? Confused.com

I cannot remember exactly why I would have travelled to Darlington on an HST to start my day, maybe it was to cover the Newcastle-Yarmouth service which was hauled by unrequired 40020. Things didn’t seem to be working out for me when 47523 headed the 0550 KX-Aberdeen. I took this to Newcastle where I was hoping the Glasgow-Scarborough would be Deltic hauled, but today 40073 was employed on the service. It was gone midday before I had my first Deltic of the day. I took No.18 to York and then back to Edinburgh. Before heading back south I had just enough time to take required 27038 to Falkirk on the 1508 Scarborough-Glasgow. Going to Falkirk with the 27 was a risky strategy because my return train to Edinburgh was not due to arrive until 2045. This was the same time for the departure of the first southbound overnight service to London. I wasn’t too concerned about this because I believed there were two serviceable Deltics on Haymarket. 55011 had spent all day on shed and should work out first; 55018 would therefore be held back for a later overnight service. Travelling out with 27038 my concern began to rise as we passed Haymarket and there was no sign of Deltic 11. On my return my concern changed to panic when there was not only no sign of Deltic 11 but Deltic 18 had vanished too, presumably to work the 2045 to KX. Fortunately 47705 had an on time arrival at Waverley where I had to race around to catch the KX train by the skin of my teeth. Deltic 18 was the only Deltic out of Edinburgh that evening with Deltic 11 being held back until the following morning.

Today I found myself travelling on some rare track for passenger trains and which is now no more. The overnight East Coast services were being diverted via Carlisle. However rather than being routed through Carlisle station the train continued from London Road Junction onto Bog Junction and then around the back of the station joining the WCML approximately half a mile to the north. Today there is little evidence of the track, I believe it is now covered by several retail outlets. At Edinburgh I had Deltic 21 on an excursion along the West Highland Line to Oban. An Edinburgh-Glasgow push-pull set was used and so I understand a Deltic was the only suitable locomotive for the duty. This was a repeat of an excursion that ran three weeks previously, which was also hauled by Deltic 21.

By 1984 the Gatwick Express services were now loco hauled by class 73s. These creatures of the night (on passenger services) were until the introduction of the dedicated 73/2 fleet, much easier to come by.

That's definitely a "Man of Steel" move. Connecting into the 20:45 Edinburgh - Kings Cross off the 20:00 ex Queen Street can't have been easy. I'd put your chances of achieving that at about 5 percent.
(Small correction: should be 47705 Falkirk H - Edinburgh, not vice versa).

I suspect there's probably a thread on this forum about it too.

Yes, the Edinburgh - Oban excursions utilised an E+G push pull set of Mk 3s, so required an ETH fitted loco with sufficiently low route availability, hence the Deltic.
(ETH 47s were too heavy for the route). The fact that Deltics were supposedly prohibited from providing ETH to Mk 3 carriages was conveniently ignored.

First (half) day of a Yorkshire Ranger. I have no idea why we did this odd move which involved a long wait in Scarborough, presumably to make sure we got the 25 and 40197 in, little were we to know...

I’m not sure it was a Man of Steel move, more like “Desperate” for a new 27! If I had known that there was only one Deltic available I wouldn’t have travelled to Falkirk and I would still require 27038. I have amended the error that you noted. Cheers

I have read the recent press reports about the Signaller recognised for diverting the freight train, however I hadn’t realised that it had been diverted via the Carlisle avoider and that this was the cause of the lines early demise.
There can't be many folk who have had a Deltic on the Carlisle avoiding line

I am assuming that engineering work was taking place within the station area and for this to take place whilst ECML trains were being diverted via the WCML would be very unusual. I remember that there were only a handful of bashers on the train. This was unexpected because there was the prospect of taking Deltic 21 to Oban later in morning. I know that one or two of them had missed the previous visit of Deltic 21 to Oban three weeks previously because of an untimely loco failure. See @CW2s earlier post #1387 for details.

Two Bank Holiday weekend relief trains turned out to be very profitable for me, both being Class 40s. For my next move I needed my push bike, almost 10 miles between Ulleskelf and Selby! I was aiming to catch the 2039 Hull-Leeds, (dep Selby 2115ish) so I would have had about an hour to complete my challenge. The loco on this train must have been dud and with the 1805 from Kings Cross running about 45 late I was able to head directly back to York where I deposited my bike back into the Left Cycles.

My first venture into North Wales and one of my last spotting trips. I took in Holyhead Breakwater to see the pair of Class 01 shunters. It didn’t go all to plan with only one of the three class 40s being required. Worst still I got bowled by a Peak on the Bangor-Manchester! I believe they were quite rare in North Wales at that time. My biggest regret is not hanging around for 24082 which worked the 1642 Llandudno-Crewe. Instead I headed to South Wales via London.

Another Bank Holiday which gives me the another chance to cover the Mondays Only 0055 from Victoria. No class 40 for me today, instead 474444444! The more interesting motive power takes shape at Leeds where Deltic 5 hauls the train forward to York. I do get my class 40 a little later and it is required, on the 0925 York-Edinburgh. Into the afternoon and I get the chance to take a pair of 25s on the 1335 Newcastle-Swansea which was very unusual for this service.

Do you recall if they'd worked down from Newcastle or was there a loco change at York?
To be honest I cannot remember, however I think I would remember if an engine change had taken place at York and I don’t. I think the train was booked to be crewed by York men from Newcastle so that shouldn't have prevented the 25s from starting out at Newcastle.

I have looked at Railgen archives and it looks like they worked the 0730 Birmingham-Newcastle throughout and returned on the 1335 Newcastle-Swansea as far as Derby.

Thanks. A very unusual move.
