Very late running!

A spotting trip with friends to Northallerton, as a young teenager. Parts of the timetable was in chaos with trains from and to Kings Cross cancelled or running via Cambridge, due to a collision and line blockage at Offord. Still quite a good day out with a hundred locos logged, half being steam including seven A4s, of which five were Kings Cross engines. The train back (a Sunderland portion, from the 3pm Kings Cross-Newcastle which split at York) was 100 minutes late, having come north via Cambridge, arriving at Northallerton just before 9pm. It had turned out to be a long day for us, and our parents (no mobiles or internet back then for easy contact).

Well spotted, my memory from those distant days seems a bit rusty! The diversions were between Hitchin and Peterborough (via Cambridge and March).

I think that was one of a very small number of passenger outings for 40139 that year....or thereafter for that matter
Most of the split headcode specimens were much sought after.....

Indeed the split-box 40s were always elusive beasts. I only had that one run with 40139, and missed several of them completely. 40142 was one which really annoyed me. It was the only split-box with a working boiler and was allocated to Haymarket, so in theory it should have been relatively easy to pick up, but again I only managed one short run with it.

If it's any consolation, 40142 was also a relatively rare sight on passenger outings for those of us based in Edinburgh!

Not a bad consolation, that 37!
I thought it was my 1.25 miles moves between Edinburgh and Haymarket that could be described as dreadful! I was never content with anything under 10 miles - and certainly not for anything decent! But it just about counts for haulage.....!
