If it was a Brighton-Blackpool North service, why did you go to Haslemere to pick it up? Was it diverted via Portsmouth?
The reasons for that are lost in the mists of time. Possibly it was diverted as a result of the failure which saw the 37 working it in the first place, or possibly there was a planned engineering diversion. Or maybe I've just got it wrong! I'll have a delve into the archive to see if I can unearth the original notebook, to see if it sheds any more light.

Back in the 'seventies the regular hourly service between Reading, Guildford, Redhill and Tonbridge was worked by the six type 3R (class 204) 'Tadpole' DEMUs (A motor brake second and trailer open second from a disbanded type 6S - or class 201 - Hastings loading gauge six car DEMU, plus a driving trailer second from a disbanded type 2-EPB EMU. These units were numbered 1201-1206. In addition, on Mondays to Saturdays, there was a morning and evening peak hour working between Redhill and Reading and return formed of a Hither Green class 33 diesel loco hauling a '3 Set K'....three elderly Southern Region Mark 1 coaches formed TSO-BSK-TSO. As you can imagine, the acceleration on the steeply-graded North Downs Line was quite impressive!

Ah ok thanks. I was aware that the line had, prior to the 119s, formerly been worked with DEMUs, but was unaware of any loco-hauled services on the route.

Interesting to see 87s on XC services, were these booked? I think I only ever saw an 87 on an XC once.

No, definitely Brighton not Portsmouth. It was a regular loco-hauled turn at the time, normally the standard 47 + 7 Mk 2 air cons. If ever the 47 blew up, it would produce something odd, as there was never a replacement ETH 47 within 50 miles of the failure. I've had a pair of 73s through to Birmingham on that train!

Ah ok - thanks. I suggested 158 as I do remember that they operated Portsmouth XCs around this time. What puzzled me was a) why would a Brighton service end up at Haslemere, it wouldn't be an ideal diversionary route due to having to run round at Havant, and b) how would it get from Brighton to Haslemere in 41 minutes? On the other hand the timing (1418) would fit a Portsmouth Harbour departure as Portsmouth to Haslemere by fast train must be about 40-45 minutes.

50040 1110 Waterloo – Tisbury
Lunch (of a liquid nature) at the Tisbury Brewery, followed by:
I've visited Tisbury a few times in the past 10 years or so, mostly to go walking - as it's very easy to get from the station into deep countryside. However I don't think I've seen the Tisbury Brewery - where was this? A local brewery I presume?

Sadly never went there in the days of 50s...

5905 could be a 2-SAP composed of 65397+77119.
From the Blood and Custard site:
"6005 Downgraded and reclassified as 2 SAP at Wimbledon Park from 21-Apr-74 and renumbered 5905.
Unit damaged in derailment at Staines 13-May-76 but repaired.
Reverted to 2 HAP no.6005 during overhaul at Eastleigh from 25-Apr-80. Unit formed with no.6040 as 4 CAP no.3213 from 7-May-82."

Ah ok, thanks. I'd heard of the SAPs but they were before my time and wasn't sure how they were numbered. That would make sense.

Yes it was what would nowadays be called a craft brewery. I turned up unannounced with a friend one day, and we got the whole guided tour, with free samples.

Not at all rare. See my posts #3104, #2990, #2994 for some other recent examples.

OK thanks for that. Also note in #3104 the 0940 Poole to Newcastle was a 50 Reading to Birmingham; I had the feeling that was the case in 1984/85 as I seem to remember seeing it at Reading a few times.

On #2990 and #2994 the service is actually the one XC where I did note 87 haulage: the 1255 Brighton to Manchester (starting at Gatwick on #2994, engineering works I guess?) Saw it on Saturday 18/8/84 but don't have any notes these days - this is purely from memory! So it's reasonable to assume that this service was booked 87 north of Birmingham.

Yes, I screwed up with my previous entry for 03/03/2000. It should have read:
37602 1459 Haslemere - Reading
This was the 1418 Portsmouth & Southsea to Blackpool North.
It was load 6, and 47847 was still attached to the rear (probably ticking over to provide ETH).

Apologies for the confusion - entirely my fault.

No worries! ;)

So this was normally booked 47 + coaches? Don't think I realised that Portsmouth still had hauled XCs this late, even less so trains that called at Haslemere. (my local station in the 80s, hence my interest - but at that time all XCs sped through on non-stop run from Havant to Guildford).

When the overnight from the south west to Scotland was diverted it used to get a pilot engine...

47500 New Street - Gloucester 1V92
45137 Cheltenham Worcester S.H. 1S19
37214 + 45137 Worcester S.H. - New Street 1S19

I don't know why I went through to Gloucester rather than bale at Cheltenham. Clearly it wasn't for a loco-hauled train back!

After a day in college:
31410 1652 Harrogate – Leeds
which re-engined to …
55010 1730 Leeds – Wakefield Westgate
DMU Wakefield Westgate – Leeds
46032 1906 Leeds – York
40078 2150 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – York

Friday 16/03/79
Another Ice Age had descended upon Yorkshire:
43098 + 43073 1620 Harrogate – Leeds
At Leeds I made an unexpected minus into my Deltic machine heading for Bradford:
55019 1540 Leeds – Bradford Exchange, 112' late.
Uncoupling the loco and running round the stock at Bradford proved to be very challenging, as the points were frozen, the brake pipes were frozen, and the shunter was frozen too!
55019 1810 Bradford Exchange – Doncaster, retimed from 1730, and 61' late.
55018 2030 Doncaster – York via Selby, 56' late.
On arrival at York I learned that there had been no trains running south from Darlington for several hours, as everything there was frozen solid. Eventually …
55007 2217 York – Doncaster via Selby, 190' late.
(Saturday 17/03/79)
47458 0121 Doncaster – York via Selby, 73' late.

Monday 16/03/81
40068 2015 Kings Cross – York

Tuesday 16/03/82 – the continuing pursuit of 40069 (Day 1)
I was en route from London to Edinburgh (via the WCML) in the hope that 40069 was still active on the Dundee circuit …
85039 0337 Carlisle – Carstairs
47707 0452 Carstairs – Edinburgh
The first train I covered was a 27, but I took it anyway:
27103 0625 Edinburgh – Inverkeithing
There was a surprise in store at Dalmeny, when we were put into the loop to allow a Freightliner train to overtake us. I doubled back to Dalmeny to cover the next Dundee diagram:
DMU Inverkeithing – Dalmeny
Success!
40069 0718 Dalmeny – Dundee
40069 0920 Dundee – Edinburgh
Then another little fill-in:
27103 1125 Edinburgh – Inverkeithing
DMU Inverkeithing – Edinburgh
40069 1235 Edinburgh – Dundee
40069 1420 Dundee – Edinburgh
40069 1725 Edinburgh – Dundee
40069 1920 Dundee – Edinburgh
I had crossed the Forth Bridge six times in the same day behind 40069. I decided I'd hang around the area to try for some more the next day. Coincidentally I heard that the 2000 Kings Cross – Edinburgh was allocated 40025. So I headed south to intercept it at Newcastle:
47051 2225 Edinburgh – Chevington Loop
Alas 47051 was feeling unwell. The driver declared it a failure at Acklington, and was able to make it as far as Chevington Loop, there to await assistance. So, what fine coal-stained loco would Gateshead send out to rescue us …. (more tomorrow)

Monday 16/03/87
37428 0204 Crewe – Shrewsbury
37427 0408 Shrewsbury – Aberystwyth
37427 0722 Aberystwyth – Shrewsbury
By sheer fluke, the driver from Aberystwyth was a former Gourock EMU driver that I knew well from my days working in Glasgow and commuting from Gourock. The 0408 Shrewsbury – Aberystwyth ran Mondays Only to get the stock to Aberystwyth to form the Cambrian Coast Express, 0722 to Euston.
47597 0933 Shrewsbury – Wolverhampton
87035 1023 Wolverhampton – Crewe
86101 1221 Crewe – Preston
85022 1334 Preston – Crewe
47610 1648 Crewe – Abergavenny

At the end of my 48-hour interview marathon, we were each summoned into a room to be told whether we were being offered a job. In my case, it was "yes" - hurray! I decided to accept, but as things transpired I ended up with the company for less than a year. Anyway, the offer of a job was not the only highlight of the day:

50045 Reading - New St 1M42

16th March 1989

So as part of the above mentioned job, while based in Windsor I had to spend a few days in Bradford. On the way back, after getting a Zing to KX, I dropped onto my pet Hoover:

50035 Paddington - Slough 1F76

Whoever said "It is better to travel than to arrive" was probably doing a Hoover from Padd to Slough!

Ooh I'm envious! Getting a decent run with a 56 was hard work. I never had one on that route.

I never had a 56 for haulage. I'd effectively stopped bashing by summer 1986 although I still recorded things until 1992. To my mind, they were VERY rare on any passenger duties when I was bashing.

I had two on the Nuneaton drags. And then one on the East Lancs last year.

Of course, people with lots of Grids in the book will have had most of them on Nedexes.

Saturday 17/03/79 – the Penmanshiel Tunnel Collapse

On this day, work was being undertaken on Penmanshiel Tunnel to enable gauge clearance for 8'6" maritime containers. In the wee small hours of the morning the tunnel collapsed, killing two men, Peter Fowler and Gordon Turnbull. Their bodies remain interred in the tunnel to this day, as it was found the ground was too unstable to excavate.
Obviously this blocked the East Coast Main Line between Berwick and Dunbar, and an emergency timetable had to be put into place, involving diversion of some passenger and freight services via the Newcastle – Carlisle line and over Beattock, and also running some daytime services to Dunbar / Berwick with a road shuttle in between.
It was decided to build a new section of line around the tunnel site, which also involved construction of a new section of the parallel A1 trunk road so that the new railway alignment could run on the former roadway. Astonishingly this was all completed in just 5 months, and the main line reopened in August 1979.
The first days on the ECML were understandably chaotic – not least because the winter weather was especially severe that year – but eventually a revised timetable was published. For the next few months, ECML overnights diesel hauled over Beattock were a nightly occurrence, not just a periodic weekend oddity. As an impoverished student I couldn't do much, but in the coming weeks I did venture out occasionally.

50037 + 46004 0815 Plymouth – Taunton
50037 was under test after repairs at Laira. It was removed at Taunton, to return to Plymouth piloting 50019 (?) on the 0830 Paddington – Plymouth. An unusual pairing.
I also alighted at Taunton for:
50036 1039 Taunton – Paddington

Tuesday 17/03/81
Having arrived at York from Kings Cross behind 40068, I had to return south:
55002 0105 York – Kings Cross via Selby
At Kings Cross I dossed in the stock of what I thought was the 0550 to Aberdeen, intending doing it as far as Stevenage for the last Aberdeen – Kings Cross overnight. Wrong!
47403 0524 Kings Cross – Peterborough ECS
This was an ECS to Peterborough to form the 0834 to Kings Cross, as I discovered when we went sailing through Stevenage non-stop. Oh well, adopt, adapt, improve …
31242 0750 Peterborough – Kings Cross

Wednesday 17/03/82 – the continuing pursuit of 40069 (Day 2)
After spending all day with 40069 on the Edinburgh – Dundee circuit, I had to find myself a decent overnight, and had decided to go to Newcastle and return, hopefully with 40025 on the 2000 from Kings Cross. That had been thwarted when 47051 failed at Chevington Loop. We festered there, waiting for assistance to be sent from Gateshead. What grimy coal-stained 37 would they dig out for us, I wondered …
46027 0140 Chevington Loop – Newcastle
So, a no-heat 46, not quite what I had in mind.
When we reached Newcastle, there was nearly a serious incident, as the following Aberdeen – Kings Cross overnight was permitted onto the other side of the island platform that we had occupied, and missed the overhanging coaches by a mere inch.
It turns out that the 2000 from Kings Cross had indeed been 40025 – but only as far as Peterborough, where it was replaced. I made the best of it, and headed back north in the comfort of a first class compartment on this second class only train …
47268 0340 Newcastle – Edinburgh
After a shower and some breakfast, here we go again, 40069 is on the same diagram:
40069 0705 Edinburgh – Dundee
40069 0920 Dundee – Edinburgh
25064 1125 Edinburgh – Inverkeithing
27106 1211 Inverkeithing – Edinburgh
40069 1235 Edinburgh – Dundee
40069 1430 Dundee – Edinburgh
At this point 40069 was declared a failure due to a defective boiler, so there was no point hanging around Edinburgh any longer:
47703 1730 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street
37112 1823 Glasgow Queen Street – Crianlarich
37190 2022 Crianlarich – Cowlairs
474xx 22xx Cowlairs – Mossend

25138/25146 Chester to WBQ, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic

Don't know if I just went out for this hoping for a 40 as I have no other moves for the day. As it happens, The Bangor appears to have had an eventful day of Rats...according to Class 25 Action, it went as follows...

25027 had done the morning diagrams (1D34 and 1J30). It was then replaced by 25245 to do 1D21, the afternoon Bangor, and that did 1J31 as far as Chester where it failed. I picked The Evening Bangor up there with the above Rats.

Firstly, I would like to make a little step backwards in the day, having just discovered some of my old guard's train journal books from my Brighton days:

FRIDAY 15th MARCH 1985:

Back in the mid-1980s there was a Fridays-only 11 12 Brighton-Penzance service which, IIRC, returned on the Sunday evening. On this occasion, the Brighton remodelling and resignalling was in full swing and the train was starting from Haywards Heath at 10 47 (ECS from Clapham Yard) and running via the Cliftonville Curve to Hove, where it stood for nine minutes to pick up its normal path. I had the good fortune to be rostered to work it and the Crompton was required:

EMU Brighton-Haywards Heath (PASS)
33 045 Haywards Heath-Havant (Consist: S18910/18916/18915/21273/21265/18917/18920/18906 Load 8 AB/EH)
EMU Havant-Brighton (PASS)

TUESDAY 17th MARCH 1981:

I had the day off work and decided to visit my parents near Garelochhead overnight:

303 045 Hyndland-Glasgow QS LL (15 22 Helensburgh Central-Airdrie)
37 014 16 35 Glasgow QS HL-Garelochhead (to Mallaig. Consist: SC4103/4079/4205/14087/1837/80735 Load 6 VB/SH)

THURSDAY 17th MARCH 1983:

I was still in Ireland with my CIE footplate pass. This being St Patrick's Day - and a public holiday in Ireland - there was a Sunday service operating, so I decided to do a day trip to Wexford, one of my favourite Irish towns, on the very scenic Dublin-Rosslare line:

074 Bray-Wexford (10 15 Dublin Connolly-Rosslare Harbour) (Cab ride)
074 Wexford-Bray (17 45 Rosslare Harbour-Dublin Connolly) (Cab ride)
