..............

My trip over this route was in September 1985, which I will detail at the appropriate time. I recall that alighting from the Swedish train at the border, I overheard some passengers say they were going for a wander as the Finnish train did not depart for over an hour, luckily for them I was able to tell them of the hour's time difference and that the Finnish train was about to go !
Ah ha. Had a similar problem in Rome (Tiburtina ?) back in the late summer of 1986. I was waiting for an overnight connection to Florence/Firenze. Train came in but was absolutely packed. A quick check of the timetable on the platform revealed an alternative one hour later - a fairly frequent overnight service.... My Italian was not very good but over the following hours I worked out that the three trains were actually different timings for the same train depending on summer time or winter time changeover and made even more er "frequent" depending on when the country further North (Austria) changed from Summer to Winter time !.

Continuing my strike-avoidance (and apparently @D6130 avoidance!) Irish bash:
Err....not quite:
081 1048 Limerick Junction – Mallow
This was the 08 50 Dublin Heuston-Tralee, on which I was riding in the cab.
079 1613 Mallow – Dublin Heuston
....and this was the 14 30 ex-Tralee, on which I was also riding in the cab. You may have seen me climbing down from the loco at Heuston!

Thursday 13th March 1986. Another of my occasional football related European tours, this time in the Northern latitudes, tis posting covers the full trip hence is quite long!.
An amazing Scandanavian marathon! I've done most of those routes....but not in a single trip! How did you get from Oslo S to Gothenburg....overnight or day train?
14.30 Boden to Haparanda – my recollection is a more modern bogie single railcar was provided rather than the 4 wheel railbus type from previous trips
That would have been one of the then new SJ Y-1 class - built in Italy by FIAT and based on the FS ALn663 and FCU ALn776 classes.

What better way to spend my 15th birthday than a spotting trip to Carlisle?

47268 Newcastle - Carlisle 1M04
08911 Stock shunt 5M04/5S15
47268 Carlisle - Newcastle 1S15

Sightings from the day...

03078
08116, 08911, 08912
25027, 25170, 25219, 25233
31206, 31292, 31411
37005, 37058, 37096, 37242
40022
45106, 45135
47026, 47099, 47195, 47268, 47418, 47420, 47452, 47501, 47528, 47536, 47555
81013, 81014, 81022
82001
85025, 85037
86101, 86224, 86228, 86230, 86236, 86243, 86255, 86261, 86328, 86329
87002, 87017, 87027, 87028, 87034, 87035

Out of 52 locos seen, 25 were required for sight, including all but 5 of the electrics. Just a pity that Haymarket hadn't been kinder with the allocation for 1M04.

That's the only time I've had a birthday bash.

Maybe you should have had a birthday bash today for your 55th?! KWVR steam gala anyone?
East Lancs yesterday was my pre-birthday bash. A steam gala is a bit too kettley for my taste!

Bit different to my last birthday bash, although I should add that 1) I usually work on my birthday and 2) since a few years ago I don't really celebrate it anyway. I do have a preferred term for birthdays, but it isn't entirely family friendly  My last 'birthday bash' just happened to co-incide with the date!

I had to go and look at when it was, 2020 was the occasion and now I've looked again at the photos from the Merseyside trip I'm actually really pleased with some of them :D I've reminded myself that I need to buy a new SD card and that I have a very large amount of photos to backup!

Apologies, this somehow fell off the cut and paste from my pre-prepared notes - original post now corrected.

A nice way to start the day:
40113 0915 York – Leeds
… but after that it was all downhill …
45001 1005 Leeds – York
46055 1123 York – Leeds
47449 1206 Leeds – York
47449 1735 York – Leeds
46032 1906 Leeds – York

Wednesday 14/03/79
55019 0032 Leeds – Doncaster via Selby Canal Jn
This was retimed from 0040, and diverted via Selby Canal due to resignalling work at Doncaster.
47416 0121 Doncaster – York via Selby
55013 0254 York – Doncaster via Selby
This was running One Engine Only, but kept to time despite being load 13.
Meanwhile, 55019 had stuck to diagram, and I was in for some more new track:
55019 0402 Doncaster – Hull via Carcroft Jn, Skellow Jn
On arrival at Hull, I walked to Hull Corporation Pier and got my head down in the first ferry to New Holland Pier.
Ferry Hull Corporation Pier – New Holland Pier
DMU New Holland Pier – Cleethorpes
40024 0840 Cleethorpes – Doncaster
This was the return working of the 0120 Manchester – Cleethorpes newspapers. The stock ran all the way back to Manchester, but was advertised as a passenger service as far as Doncaster. It was a regular 40 diagram, with the same loco often appearing night after night.

Friday 14/03/80
86233 0050 Euston – Stafford
86255 0300 Stafford – Manchester Piccadilly via Stoke
I had come all this way to do The Bangor. I alighted at Piccadilly, walked across to Victoria, and found the train was cancelled due to Warrington PSB staff taking industrial action. Bah, humbug (or similar expressions).
47531 0850 Manchester Victoria – York, 20' late, Warrington PSB dispute.
There was some reason in this madness:
40069 1347 York – Manchester Victoria
I alighted to do the afternoon Bangor:
40012 1540 Manchester Victoria – Chester
The driver of this was especially ham-fisted, with the loco overloading and snatching savagely whenever he ripped open the power handle.
DMU / EMU Chester – Liverpool
40069 1805 Liverpool Lime Street – York
We had a parallel departure with 86247 on the 1805 Liverpool – Euston, and 40069 beat it to Edge Hill. 6' early into York. Then off to Plymouth to visit my parents:
45029 2134 York – Bristol Temple Meads via Selby, Doncaster, Rotherham Masborough, Sheffield, New Street, Worcester Shrub Hill, Gloucester.
(Sat 15/03/80)
47433 0635 Bristol Temple Meads - Plymouth

Saturday 14/03/81
After doing 55019 on the 2300 Kings Cross – Leeds as far as Doncaster, I had to return south. Fortunately I didn't have long to wait:
55008 0152 Doncaster – Kings Cross
Then later the same day, 40069 put in another appearance:
40069 2315 Kings Cross – Leeds via Joint Lines, Sleaford avoider, Doncaster, Hare Park, Wakefield Kirkgate, Wakefield Westgate, Viaduct.
So on successive nights out of Kings Cross I had my Deltic machine and my 40 machine on the same train. (The Saturday 2315 was the same train as the Weekdays 2300).

Monday 14/03/83
Returning from my brief trip to Ireland:
47xxx 0115 Holyhead – Chester
DMU 0300 Chester – Manchester Victoria
47423 0716 Manchester Victoria – York
Then after a day in York, word reached me of a 40 allocated out of Kings Cross:
43094 + 43162 1945 York – Kings Cross via Selby

Wednesday 14/03/84
I was working night shift in Leeds Control. There was the option of going home to my bed in York and sleeping soundly through the day, or alternatively:
DMU Leeds – Dewsbury
31404 0745 Dewsbury – Leeds
47518 0826 Leeds – Chester
40015 1045 Chester – Manchester Victoria
This was the 0847 Holyhead – Scarborough, and I was looking forward to spending many hours behind it. There was no heat until Frodsham, until suddenly the boiler burst into vigorous life, and the coaches were toasty and warm quite soon. On arrival at Manchester Victoria there was a 45/1 waiting to take over, as the 40 had been wired "No Heat". They had to wait 5 minutes for the steam pipes to cool down and the excess steam to disperse before attempting to uncouple this "No Heat" loco! Time for Plan B:
DMU Manchester Victoria – Preston
87017 1256 Preston – Carlisle
40024 1635 Carlisle – Leeds
… and back to another night shift!

Thursday 14/03/85
Having arrived at Perth behind 40122 on the 2050 from Carlisle, there was the option of doing the dreaded Blair Atholl overnight, but something better presented itself:
40122 0051 Perth – Stirling
This was the 6D22 2110 Inverness – Mossend Speedlink service. Three of us (all railway staff) cadged a ride in the back cab as far as Stirling, where they kindly stopped to drop us off. What we didn't realise was that Stirling station was locked up overnight, so the normal exits were closed. We had to go out through the car park. My mate examined the gate, declared it locked, and we set about climbing over it. I was in the undignified position of having one leg either side of the gate when my momentum caused the (now apparently unlocked) gate to swing gently open, with me still perched on top of it. We all fell about laughing at the ludicrousness of it all. After a doss at my mate's place, I came out for the up Inverness overnight:
47444 0437 Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street

Saturday 14/03/87
We changed shifts an hour earlier in Glasgow Control on a Saturday, so I was straight out from work onto:
87018 1310 Glasgow Central – Euston
11' early arrival into Euston. At the booked arrival time of 1831, I was just stepping onto the platform of the Underground at Victoria.
73106 1845 Victoria – Gatwick Airport
47588 2011 Gatwick Airport – Newhaven Marine via Wivelsfield, Lewes
7796 Newhaven Harbour – Seaford, Seaford – Gatwick Airport

SATURDAY 14th MARCH 1981:

After spending the night at my girlfriend's in London, I made a quick dash out to Woking and back for a required Crompton:

33 016 Waterloo-Woking (14 10 to Salisbury. Consist: S16210/16198/4910/4905/34953/4907/80945 Load 7 VB/DH)
7057/7755 Woking-Vauxhall * (13 50 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo)

*The original plan was to go through to Waterloo, but a prolonged signal stop at Vauxhall - caused by a points failure at Waterloo - saw me decide to bale out there instead and return to North London on the Victoria Line.

MONDAY 14th MARCH 1983:

Continuing my week in Ireland with a CIE footplate pass:

229 Bray-Dun Laoghaire (17 58 Bray-Howth. Cab ride)
186+126 Dun Laoghaire-Bray (1820 Dublin Connolly-Rosslare Harbour)

Just a short trip on this day, as I had appointments in Bray during the day and in the evening.

SATURDAY 14th MARCH 2009:

En route to Italy again:

373 016/015 ES 9028, 13 32 London St Pancras International-Paris Nord

THURSDAY 14th MARCH 2019:

After a couple of nights with friends in Paris, we're on our way to our place in Italy again:

TGV 4505 EC 9241, 06 29 Paris Lyon-Torino Porta Susa via Lyon Part Dieu and St Andre-le-Gaz (with TGV 748 attached rear as far as Lyon PD)
ETR400 31 FR 9329, Torino PS-Firenze SMN via Milano Centrale and HSL (13 20 Torino Porta Nuova-Napoli Centrale)
E464 651 R 3099, 16 58 Firenze SMN-Arezzo via San Donato and Bucine (to Chiusi CT)
EDz17+EDz18 TFT 1186, 18 20 Arezzo-Pratovecchio Stia

EDz 17 & 18 are Bo-Bo electric locos rebuilt with new bodies in 1949 and 1952 respectively using the underframes, bogies and motors of 1932-built LFI motor luggage vans which were burnt-out during the allied invasion of Italy in 1944, when the station and depot area of Arezzo was heavily bombed.

Firstly, it was quite surprising that I was in any fit state to turn out this day, after a birthday pub crawl the previous evening. "The Harborne Run", for those familiar with that part of Brum.

Anyway, I was taking advantage of the cheap March fares for another day out...

47602 New St - Gloucester 1V55

Happily, this did not run round...

50001 Gloucester - Bristol TM 1V55
33017 Bristol TM - Portsmouth Harbour 1O42
33031 Portsmouth Harbour - Portsmouth & Southsea 1V85
33037 Portsmouth & Southsea - Portsmouth Harbour 1O43
33017 Portsmouth Harbour - Bristol TM 1V87
47597 Bristol TM - New St 1S19
37690 Lickey Banker 1S19

I like the contrast between the big mileage moves on 33017 and the ned leaps on the other two Cromptons! I did get all three of them in the book.

14th March 1988

On my way to attend an extended job interview that involved a 2-night stay in deepest Surrey...

47484 New St - Oxford 1O09

Rather than do this all the way to Reading, I did the smart move and baled at Oxford for a Hoover...

47634 Oxford - Reading 1F45

...or perhaps not.

There must have been 20-30 of us all being interviewed, tested, and generally assessed. IIRC, there was some free beer too.

MONDAY 20th FEBRUARY 1978:

A day of massive disruption on the Southern Region, most of Southern and South-Western England awoke to a think blanket of snow and sub-zero temperatures:

7745/7050/5905/7746/7716 + 33 022 Petersfield-Guildford (combined 0530 and 06 13 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo, following the failure of the former North of Rowlands Castle. The 17 coaches and one loco were rather too long for all the platforms en route and the combined trains arrived at Guildford at 09 44 and split - having arrived Petersfield at 08 29 and departed 08 43!

5905/7746/7716 Guildford-Surbiton via Woking (06 13 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo....departed Guildford at 09 55)
7807/7702 Surbiton-Wimbledon (10 00 Guildford-Waterloo via Woking)
What was 5905? I only know that numbering from 455s which a) didn't exist in 1978 and b) couldn't work in multiple with VEPs...

A 2EPB? I don't recall them being numbered in the 59xx series though I do seem to remember the BR-style examples (later in the 62xx series) being numbered 57xx before the introduction of the 455s.

(Sorry if this is a sucking-eggs question, but I only started travelling on the SR four years later).

Interesting to note there was an 0530 Portsmouth to Waterloo as long ago as 1977/78. That was a long standing service which existed for most, perhaps all, of the 80s, when it was the first up train, all to Guildford then Woking and Waterloo. Also the 0613 would, I guess, have been what later became the 0627 from Bedhampton. If so, it shows remarkable stability for the morning peak timetable.

As an aside, that's another year to add to the rather long list of years in that era with significant snowfall in southern England. I knew that snow affected the SW that month but didn't realise it extended further east. (I didn't live in the south in 1978). The decade 1978-87 was clearly epic in that respect.

SATURDAY 21st FEBRUARY 1976:

A trip to Birmingham to attend one of the inaugral meetings of the Western Locomotive Association, held in the BR conference room at New Street station:

EMU Petersfield-Guildford
33 209 Guildford-Reading
What was the 33-hauled service from Guildford-Reading? Too early I think for through XCs from Guildford so I presume this was a local service, but was the 33 booked?

I was at work in London when I got the tip that the 1418 Brighton – Blackpool North was going to be a 37 today, following a failure:
2413 Waterloo – Haslemere
37602 1459 Haslemere – Reading via Guildford, Wokingham

Do you mean 1418 Portsmouth to Blackpool North?

It's the first time I've ever heard of a hauled service call at Haslemere, besides the odd 33 drag of 42x EMUs at times of snow and ice - so that in itself must have been very unusual. What was the 37 and stock vice: a 158?

I am thinking 5905 is a single coach - Mk2 2nd open (I vaguely believe). Ah and he says the consist was 17 coaches. So 4x4car EMUs plus 1 coach. But how/why it got into that train I do not know.

I'd say it was more likely to be a 2-SAP unit, which were second class only (downgraded) HAPs.

I can't see why the SR would randomly attach a Mark 2E coach to a unit formation!

5905 could be a 2-SAP composed of 65397+77119.
From the Blood and Custard site:
"6005 Downgraded and reclassified as 2 SAP at Wimbledon Park from 21-Apr-74 and renumbered 5905.
Unit damaged in derailment at Staines 13-May-76 but repaired.
Reverted to 2 HAP no.6005 during overhaul at Eastleigh from 25-Apr-80. Unit formed with no.6040 as 4 CAP no.3213 from 7-May-82."

That makes more sense. I remember there were a lot of 2HAPs. I remember that about two dozen got formed into 4CAPs leaving the rest to the gas axe iirc. Many were on underframes from even older units and the newer underframed ones made it into 4CAPs iirc. I had forgotten about their declassified phase. Maybe 17 is really 18 ?.

I did a lot of mileage on 4CAPs - usually in the evenings from Victoria to Sole Street. I suppose up until April 1988 when I moved to Croydon.

No, definitely Brighton not Portsmouth. It was a regular loco-hauled turn at the time, normally the standard 47 + 7 Mk 2 air cons. If ever the 47 blew up, it would produce something odd, as there was never a replacement ETH 47 within 50 miles of the failure. I've had a pair of 73s through to Birmingham on that train!

What was the 33-hauled service from Guildford-Reading? Too early I think for through XCs from Guildford so I presume this was a local service, but was the 33 booked?
Back in the 'seventies the regular hourly service between Reading, Guildford, Redhill and Tonbridge was worked by the six type 3R (class 204) 'Tadpole' DEMUs (A motor brake second and trailer open second from a disbanded type 6S - or class 201 - Hastings loading gauge six car DEMU, plus a driving trailer second from a disbanded type 2-EPB EMU. These units were numbered 1201-1206. In addition, on Mondays to Saturdays, there was a morning and evening peak hour working between Redhill and Reading and return formed of a Hither Green class 33 diesel loco hauling a '3 Set K'....three elderly Southern Region Mark 1 coaches formed TSO-BSK-TSO. As you can imagine, the acceleration on the steeply-graded North Downs Line was quite impressive!

Wednesday 15/03/78
46032 0915 York – Leeds
40084 1005 Leeds – York

Sunday 15/03/81
The purpose of this move has long since been forgotten …
47487 0900 Leeds – Wakefield Westgate
43091 + 43111 1001 Wakefield Westgate – Kings Cross
The 47 was dud, so I've no idea why I split the journey at Wakefield.

Monday 15/03/82
My machine 40069 was active on Edinburgh – Dundees, and I had a few days leave due, so I decided to head north. Euston offered an excellent start:
82005 2055 Euston – Carlisle

Tuesday 15/03/83
After an HST all the way from York, my patience was rewarded:
40035 0005 Kings Cross – Newcastle via Selby
43xxx + 43164 0646 Newcastle – York
… and back to work!

Sunday 15/03/87
Continuing my clueless blithering around the Southern Region:
73132 0110 Gatwick Airport – Victoria via Crystal Palace, Balham, Clapham Jn
Then a long cold fester at Victoria until:
33010 + 33027 0350 Victoria – Ashford via Herne Hill, Crystal Palace, Beckenham Jn, Orpington, Tonbridge
I expected an ED on this, but presumably it was 33s because of Sunday morning engineering works. The pair came off at Ashford to be replaced by:
33035 0537 Ashford – Deal via Dover Priory
1541 0800 Deal – Waterloo East (catching up on the doss!)
50040 1110 Waterloo – Tisbury
Lunch (of a liquid nature) at the Tisbury Brewery, followed by:
50030 1404 Tisbury – Salisbury
33209 1434 Salisbury – Trowbridge
33037 1538 Trowbridge – Fareham
33113 1732 Fareham – Eastleigh
73135 1802 Eastleigh – Southampton
33062 1901 Southampton – Bristol Temple Meads
47575 2125 Bristol Temple Meads – Birmingham New Street
37690 Lickey Banker
86403 2355 Birmingham New Street – Crewe
A pretty fine and varied day – but quite a tiring one. I was pleased to score several 33s, and was delighted to see 37690 as the Lickey banker. Alas, it was dud (as 37171), and it survives to this day as 37611.

No, definitely Brighton not Portsmouth.
If it was a Brighton-Blackpool North service, why did you go to Haslemere to pick it up? Was it diverted via Portsmouth?
