I had taken a day off work and come south overnight to attend the funeral service in Shrewsbury that afternoon of DTJ Rollason aka “Wellington”. A real character, and a good friend. First, a fill-in on the Gatwicks:

There were 9 of David Rollason’s relatives present for the funeral, and 107 bashers, much to the relatives' utter astonishment. After the funeral:

MONDAY 26th FEBRUARY 1973:

First day of the school half-term holidays, IIRC, and I and a couple of friends enjoyed a spotting trip around Central Scotland:

EMU Helensburgh Central-High Street
Bus (Route 27) High Street-Polmadie
Depot visit: Polmadie (without permit)
Bus (Route 27) Polmadie-High Street
EMU High Street-Glasgow QS LL
Walk: Glasgow QS-Glasgow Central
DMU: Glasgow Central-Motherwell-Glasgow Central (out via Bellshill, return via Hamilton)
Walk: Glasow Central-Glasgow Queen Street
367 (later 40 167) Glasgow Queen Street-Stirling
5388 (later 27 105 and later still 27 049) Stirling-Glasgow Queen Street
5360 (later 27 014) 18 35 Glasgow Queen Street-Helensburgh Upper (to Oban)

SATURDAY 26th FEBRUARY 1977:

THE END: The final Western railtour - the Western Tribute - unbelievably 45 years ago today!

7343/7053/7345 Petersfield-Waterloo (05 23 from Portsmouth Harbour)
1013 "Western Ranger" + 1023 "Western Fusilier" Paddington-Swansea-Plymouth-Paddington (via Severn Tunnel in both directions and returning via Westbury avoider)

IIRC, the special was shadowed by the two other Westerns still in service - 1041 "Western Prince" and 1048 "Western Lady" - running light engine coupled together in case of failure - but, in the event, they were not needed as 1013 and 1023 performed faultlessly throughout. We overtook the standby locos at Bristol, while en route from Swansea to Plymouth. The scenes on arrival back at Paddington late in the evening were unprecedented and difficult to describe. The shouting, singing and arm-waving went on long into the night, even after the locos had returned light engine to Old Oak Common and was remniscent of a football cup final. I don't know what the few 'normals' who were still around at that time of night must have thought was going on! We missed our last train back from Waterloo, having decided to drown our sorrows in a pub in the West End and you'll find out tomorrow how we eventually arrived home.

SATURDAY 26th FEBRUARY 1983:

Having spent the night at my grandmother's on Teesside, I was now heading South to visit my friends in Hampshire:

43 097+43 117 Eaglescliffe-Kings Cross via Northallerton (06 54 from Middlesbrough. Consist: SC41072/41071/40508/40025/42139/42140/42141/
44 048 Load 8 AB/EH)
7747 10 30 Waterloo-Guildford via Cobham
7422 Guildford-Petersfield (10 20 Waterloo-Portsmouth & Southsea via Woking)

I would have liked to have done the 11 00 Waterloo-Exeter as far as Woking but, unfortunately, I had an early lunch appointment near Petersfield.

26th February 1986

Using the two return portions of the two £4 tickets from a couple of weeks earlier...

85012 New Street - Stoke 1H03

Nice start, but things would get better after taking a unit to Crewe. Crewe works would send locos that had just been overhauled for a test run on the North Wales Coast. Today was one of those days...

37699 + 33056 Crewe - Bangor 1D27

The Class 37 gen site says that 699 failed on arrival and ended up returning to Crewe light engine...

At least the Crompton was still OK...

33056 Bangor - Shrewsbury 1V33
87018 Wolverhampton - New Street 1G62

699 had another go the next day and made it back to Crewe...

26th February 1990

A work trip to London. But as there were fallen trees, wires down, etc. trains from Birmingham couldn't go to Euston and were being diverted...

47831 International - Paddington
47462 Paddington - New Street

Tomorrow there is a cheap February trip that didn't go quite to plan...

I had arrived at Newcastle with my machine, 40069, on the 2015 Kings Cross – Edinburgh. I hoped for something decent for my return journey, but it was not to be:
47419 0217 Newcastle – Kings Cross
However after work I struck lucky again:
40057 1635 Kings Cross – Peterborough
55012 1853 Peterborough – Kings Cross

Thursday 27/02/86
37402 1805 Glasgow Queen Street - Stirling
Off to visit a friend in Stirling, then:
DMU Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street
81009 2345 Glasgow Central – Wolverhampton
I alighted at Wolverhampton in order to cover the class 50 on the 0555 Wolverhampton – Paddington, which was doing some unusual track that week …

Friday 27/02/87
After Wellington’s funeral I had stayed overnight in Crewe, then headed back north in a manner he would very much have appreciated:
87014 0941 Crewe – Carstairs
87029 1251 Carstairs – Glasgow Central

Monday 27/02/89
86224 2352 Crewe – Mossend (I was in the Fort William portion)

Tuesday 27/02/96
86207 1445 Euston – Milton Keynes Central
87101 1540 Milton Keynes Central – Euston
87101 1725 Euston – Crewe
Euston was in a state for locos, with all manner of step-ups taking place. The stock on which 87101 worked into Euston formed the 1715 to Birmingham; once released, 87101 worked the 1725 to Glasgow Central, starting 12’ late, and the loco released off the rear of that (at 1737) worked the 1730 to Holyhead. These were my final two main line runs with 87101, clearing it for 1000 miles in the process.
37417 2017 Crewe – Stafford
87011 2049 Stafford – Euston, 22’ late.

SUNDAY 27th FEBRUARY 1977:

After the excitement and the sadness of the last rites for the Westerns on the previous day, I and my friends had to get back to deepest, darkest Hampshire:

73 119 03 40 Waterloo-Guildford (normally running to Petersfield but, on this occasion, terminating at Guildford due to engineering works)
Rail replacement taxi: Guildford-Petersfield

SUNDAY 27th FEBRUARY 1983:

After a hectic weekend vistiting firstly my grandmother on Teesside and then my friends in Hampshire, it was time to return to Glasgow. Following lunch at a nice pub in Midhurst, West Sussex, I caught a bus to Haslemere for the return journey Northwards:

7403/7354 Haslemere-Waterloo (14 20 from Portsmouth Harbour)

On arrival at Euston, I was expecting the usual 86 or 87 on the 17 25 to Glasgow, but look what I found at the head of the train!:

81 011 17 25 Euston-Glasgow Central (Consist: M5928/12010/12096/12112/12041/3204/11055/11011/81392 Load 9 AB/EH)

Why did the 1725 ex-Euston on a Sunday never have a buffet car....and what did the set work on the Monday?

Unfortunately, Six Bells or RailGen don't shed any light on whether this was a railtour or not. I vaguely remember the whole family going and having a day in Ely whilst I popped down to Cambridge. Did I also join it at Warrington Central? Moves recreated from class listings which suggest there was a 47/4 from Nuneaton to Ely (and from Warrington, if I got on there).

85003 Manchester Picc to Nuneaton
37099 Ely to Cambridge
47265 Cambridge to Ely
85003 Nuneaton to Ely

Was my first 37 haulage.

Saturday 27th February 1988

86234 Wolves to Birmingham NS, 11.26 Wolves to Euston
50036 Birmingham NS to Oxford, 13.10 Birmingham to Paddington

I had purchased a cheap February ticket to Penzance. Unfortunately, having spent the previous evening in the pub I woke up just as the train I was meant to catch was going past outside. :'(

All was not lost,, and I got myself sorted and down to New Street as fast as possible for a curtailed journey....

47646 New Street - Plymouth 1V59

I decided to head back to Newton Abbot on the first available Tram to sample a couple of pubs. The first one I walked into had a buffet laid out for the pub football team and I was invited to tuck in. That was probably the high point of the day!

47525 Newton Abbot - New Street 1S19

As we approached Bromsgrove I positioned myself at a droplight to see which big Syphon would be banking us. Nothing there! After a few minutes a pair of marker lights appeared, a 37 positioned itself on the back of the train and away we went...

37xxx Lickey Banker 1S19

The 37 gen site does not have a record of what it was, so it will remain a mystery.

In summary: overdossed, failed to reach Penzance, two ETH Duffs, a Tram and an unknown Syphon. Yes, the free sausage rolls were the best bit.

Sunday 27th February 1983; A day out on diverted train 'drags', which I have to say turned out to be rather disappointing:
47419 0850 Paddington-Manchester Piccadilly (Oxford-Birmingham New St)
47462 1305 Birmingham New St-Liverpool Lime St (to Stafford via Cannock)
86208 1242 Manchester Piccadilly-Euston (Stafford-Nuneaton)
47488 1340 Euston-Shrewsbury (Nuneaton-Birmingham New St)
81021 1540 Euston-Wolverhampton (from Birmingham New St)
81021 1800 Wolverhampton-Euston (to Birmingham New St)
47356 ditto (Birmingham New St-Nuneaton)
81021 ditto (from Nuneaton)

At least 47356 and the 81 were required.

Booked formation according to the 82/83 Marshalling book, with the Mk2 FO declassified. It shown next working as 10.10 Monday! And checking the 10.10 EWD, that formation with the RUB inserted. Previous working 18.15 SO Manchester Euston - checked back on that one, it had RKB, next and previous workings of which were Euston Manchester!

In 74 or 75 I travelled on the 14.45 FO from Euston which was 8 Mk2Cs again with no buffet albeit FO WTT additional being a bit less worthy than a main Sunday evening train.

Sunday 28/02/82
The power was off on the Clacton branch for maintenance today, so the chance arose to do the line loco-hauled:
37041 1002 Liverpool Street – Clacton
37084 1424 Clacton – Liverpool Street
The trains ran via the Goods Lines at Colchester in each direction.

Monday 28/02/83
40050 1354 York – Farnley Branch Junction
I saw that 40050 was on a Liverpool – Scarborough circuit, and booked a half day’s leave to have it on the 1300 Scarborough – Liverpool. We came to a halt at Farnley Branch Junction, with a traction motor flashover on 40050, and unable to regain power. Eventually 47414 was summoned to assist us, and propelled us to Huddersfield, before running round and hauling the train to Manchester Victoria, where it terminated, rather late.
47414 15xx Farnley Branch Junction – Manchester Victoria
I carried on to Liverpool on the following Trans Pennine service, in the hope the return journey might produce something decent, as they would be a loco short at Liverpool:
47418 1637 Manchester Victoria – Liverpool Lime Street
40013 1805 Liverpool Lime Street – York
Success at last!
On arrival back at York I was all ready to call it a day when I noticed that the 2206 to Shrewsbury “The Bangor Mails” had a 37 on the front of it. That was most unusual.
37023 2206 York – Stockport via Stalybridge, Guide Bridge
(Tuesday 01/03/83)
37023 0051 Stockport – York via Guide Bridge, Stalybridge
The same 37 worked on the next couple of nights too, then disappeared back down to Stratford. That was the only occasion I saw/had a 37 on this working. This must have taken some careful planning and co-ordination, as it was Leeds traincrew forward from Leeds to Stockport and return, and relatively few of them signed both 37s and Stockport.

Friday 28/02/86 – West Midlands engineering diversions.
50032 0555 Wolverhampton – Leamington Spa via Pleck Jn, Sutton Park, Saltley, Solihull
47417 0801 Leamington Spa – Crewe via Coventry, Nuneaton
33022 1115 Crewe – Holyhead
33022 1350 Holyhead – Crewe
The above pair of services were only scheduled to run to / from Bangor, but were extended to / from Holyhead due to connecting passengers on a late-running shipping service. 33s weren’t regular visitors to Holyhead, so I was pleased with this variation.

37413 0347 Mossend – Fort William
There was yet another different route variation on this service: via Whifflet South Jn., Rutherglen, Glasgow Central High Level (reverse), Rutherglen West Jn., Glasgow Central Low Level, Westerton.
I was on duty in Fort William, riding with the guard in the back cab of the 1039 Fort William Yard – Mossend as far as Crianlarich, carrying out Speedlink transit monitoring:

SUNDAY 29th FEBRUARY 1976:

A leap year day trip to Cornwall in search of Westerns. My friends and I travelled from Petersfield to Reading via Guildford the previous evening and then took the overnight - on the cushions - Westwards:

47 113 Reading-Plymouth via Bristol (23 45 Paddington-Penzance)
1068 "Western Reliance" Plymouth-Penzance (23 45 Paddington-Penzance)
50 028 Penzance-Plymouth
1051 "Western Ambassador" Plymouth-Reading via Westbury (including single line working from Dawlish Warren to Starcross for engineering works)
DEMU Reading-Guildford
EMU Guildford-Petersfield

Unfortunately I didn't record which train(s) we travelled back on from Penzance to Reading.

After this trip I totted-up my Western haulage and mileage up until 1st March 1976:

1006 "Western Stalwart": Paddington-Reading (36 miles)
1025 "Western Guardsman": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1033 "Western Trooper": Paddington-Reading (36 miles) and Birmingham New Street-Reading (94.5 miles), (Total: 130.5 miles)
1041 "Western Prince": Paddington-Reading (36 miles)
1043 "Western Duke": Newport-Cardiff Central (11.75 miles) and Reading-Paddington (36 miles), (Total:47.75 miles)
1047 "Western Lord": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1051 "Western Ambassador": Plymouth-Reading via Westbury (189.5 miles)
1052 "Western Viceroy": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1053 "Western Patriarch": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1063 "Western Monitor": Plymouth-Newton Abbot (32 miles)
1067 "Western Druid": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1068 "Western Reliance": Plymouth-Penzance (79.5 miles) Grand total: 747.25 miles.

Over the course of the following year, while the class were being run-down for final withdrawal, I managed to have rides behind several more Westerns - including 1010, 1013, 1022, 1023, 1037, 1044, 1048, 1054, 1056, 1071 and 1072 - plus some more mileage behind some of those listed above, taking my total mileage to over 1,500....but I haven't yet been able to find my records for that period yet.

A day at college in Harrogate, then:
43076 + 43077 1620 Harrogate – Leeds
46049 1707 Leeds – York
47408 1816 York – Selby
55017 1852 Selby – York
Later that evening I saw 40069 was working the overnight Stockport turn (“The Bangor Mails”) but for some reason I had to go to Leeds beforehand – perhaps handing over some paperwork to a fellow student – hence:
43065 + 43xxx 2130 York – Leeds
40069 2250 Leeds – Stockport via OA&GB Jn, Denton Jn
(Friday 02/03/79)
40069 0051 Stockport – York via Denton Jn, OA&GB Jn

Saturday 01/03/80
To supplement my meagre student grant – and to enable some paid cranking – I had applied to work as a train trolley caterer at Euston. The idea was to work through the summer, but first they had to try me out to see if I was capable of doing the job. So when a Euston – York ADEX was planned to have train catering trolleys on board, I was asked to assist the rostered Trolleyman, who would report back to his bosses in due course as to whether or not I was a suitable recruit.
I booked on duty at Euston at 0715, an hour before the booked departure time, to pick up our trolleys and stores, and a couple of urns, which we filled with boiling water. Then we trudged through the basement at Euston to appear up the ramp by the bufferstops, and bundled everything into the brake van of our rake of 12 Mk 1s (one of the Cobbler sets, usually used for Northampton – Euston commuter services).
86231 0815 Euston – Stockport via Northampton, Crewe
Hello, what’s waiting for us at Stockport?
40031 1119 Stockport – York via Denton Jn, OA&GB Jn
An excellent start to my trolleying career. We were able to dump our trolley and supplies in the Travellers Fare buffet offices in York station, so we were free for a touristic wander around York, prior to our return journey. Of course we had to refill the urns with a fresh charge of hot water.
40031 1657 York – Stockport via OA&GB Jn, Denton Jn
Surprisingly our return loco wasn’t (quite) the same.
86230 1856 Stockport – Euston via Crewe, Northampton
There was a delay at Stockport as nobody could find the guard. It turned out he had been trapped between two end-vestibule doors whilst walking through the train. Once he was released, we got under way 20’ late. That was when I learned that any late arrival into Euston would result in paid overtime, as we were booked for 1 hour after the train arrived to unload everything, transport it back to the Travellers Fare buffet, and dispose of all the goods. So if the train ran late, we got paid more.
I got a favourable report on my day’s performance, and was engaged to work as a Train Trolley Caterer.

Saturday 01/03/86
73138 0008 Basingstoke – Southampton
33002 0155 Southampton – Malago Vale CS
I’d started off this “long weekend” bash in Glasgow the previous Thursday evening, so I was already quite tired by the time I joined the 0155 Southampton – Bristol Temple Meads … and woke up in Malago Vale Carriage Sidings! Oops. Fortunately there was a quick exit:
33023 0630 Malago Vale CS – Bristol Temple Meads
50024 0730 Bristol Temple Meads – Cardiff Central
A nice way to get into South Wales. My plan for the day was to do some West Wales branches.
43167 + 43004 0903 Cardiff – Swansea
37426 1020 Swansea – Fishguard Harbour via Carmarthen
37426 1305 Fishguard Harbour – Whitland
Having done Fishguard with a 37/4, I alighted at Whitland to do it again, with a 33 this time:
33022 1352 Whitland – Fishguard Harbour
33022 1510 Fishguard Harbour – Swansea via Carmarthen
Targets achieved.
43020 + 43139 1743 Swansea – Bristol Parkway
1958 Bristol Parkway – Bristol Temple Meads
33056 2020 Bristol Temple Meads – Westbury
Rather than doing another overnight on the Waterloo – Southampton route, I decided to do the Weymouth – Waterloo overnight:
DMU Westbury – Weymouth
33116 2253 Weymouth – Eastleigh
Sadly, my anticipated long doss all the way to Waterloo was miserably fractured by engineering works:
BUS Eastleigh – Basingstoke
4 VEP EMU Basingstoke – Waterloo
That wasn’t quite the snoozy overnight I had in mind!

Wednesday 01/03/89
After a night in Oban, I resumed by task of monitoring freight traffic on the West Highland Line on behalf of Speedlink.
37410 0855 Oban – Crianlarich
This was the freight service to Mossend, and I had a ride in the front cab throughout. First, we shunted Oban Yard and Oil Terminal, and en route we also served Taynuilt and Connel Ferry yards. There was also an outbreak of sheep wrestling at one point. Some dim sheep had broken through the lineside fence, and was stubbornly wandering along the tracks, refusing to deviate to either side. The second man got out, wrestled it to the ground, then picked it up and heaved it back over the fence. I bet that doesn’t feature in the job description!
At Crianlarich we crossed with the Mossend – Oban service, which we swapped into:
37403 12xx Crianlarich – Crianlarich Lower Yard
We shunted various timber wagons around the yard, then I said my farewells, and walked back to the station.
156 450 + 156 449 1356 Crianlarich – Glasgow Queen Street
90013 1620 Glasgow Central – Crewe

Wednesday 01/03/95
6024 0755 Swansea – Paddington
90’ late start, awaiting stock from the sidings.
6024 1858 Paddington – Didcot
6024 was on the final day of its main line certificate, so it went out in grand style with a high mileage railtour.

A trip to Paddington to see and photograph ‘King’ 6000 on a BR Special to Didcot, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Paddington Station. ‘Hall’ 5900 and newly named 47500 were on show. Peak 46026 notably arrived with a train from the west, the only 46 I have recorded at Paddington. Then visits to Euston, Kings Cross and Liverpool St. before returning north.

1st March 1986

West Midlands Day Tripper

Highlights:

85010 New Street - International 1A60
85019 Sandwell and Dudley - New Street 1G62

In addition to the two desperate Roarer moves I had to endure six Cans - 418, 436, 217, 212, 417, 216

1st March 1987

Instead of cheap February tickets , 1987 offered cheap March tickets. I didn't waste any time, and started the month going for an unusual double headed working...

31444 + 31420 (+ 86209) New Street - Nuneaton 1A06

No, not that - this was just a positioning move, followed by a DMU and a pint before the day's objective...

45127 + 45108 Leicester - St Pancras 1C22

Yes, I went for the regular Sundays only pair of Peaks,, just to be able to say I'd done it. For a Brucie Bonus we were routed through Sharnbrook Tunnel, the only time I've done that.

47616 St Pancras - Leicester 1P20

West Midlands Day Tripper

And that is where the similarities end. I also had a number of cans (none overlapped with you), a different roarer, but also some 87s. I also noted that most of the moves involved the Soho and Perry Bar Junctions, Aston and Stechford diversions (indicated with an asterisk below). We probably saw each other on a platform somewhere...

Saturday 1st March 1986

87022 Wolves to Coventry (*), 06.25 Chester to Euston
87007 Coventry to Wolves (*), 08.35 Euston to Wolves
87007 Wolves to Coventry (*), 11.25 Wolves to Euston
86230 Coventry to Birmingham Int, 11.40 Euston to Shrewsbury
312201 Birmingham Int to Birmingham NS (*), 13.02 Coventry to Birmingham NS
85029 Birmingham NS to Wolves, 14.13 Birmingham to Liverpool
86241 Wolves to Birmingham NS, 13.25 Manchester to Birmingham
310088 Birmingham NS to Sandwell and Dudley, 15.18 Birmingham to Wolves
86239 Sandwell and Dudley to Coventry (*), 15.27 Wolves to Euston
87022 Coventry to Wolves (*), 12.55 Brighton to Manchester

I’m fairly sure 1/3/86 was a weekend closure at Proof House Jn for work to rebuild the bridge over the Stour lines.

I travelled Euston - Wolverhampton that day, my first ever solo trip on the WCML. No idea what time service, let alone the loco (I really have no interest in that!) but I do know we went via Aston / Perry Barr to S&D. I do remember being rather surprised by the noise of the tread brakes on the Mk2 aircon coaches when we braked the first time (presumably for Watford). Met my Dad at Wolves, he was heading south from Edinburgh on, I think, the Sussex Scot. Then off to pick up a new (to us) car, a Triumph Acclaim in ‘faded Gold metallic’. It was so good we’d got rid of it inside three months….

47523 1555 York – Leeds
This train was a rarity – a through train from York to Kings Cross via Leeds.
45010 1706 Leeds – York
47445 1735 York – Leeds
46032 1906 Leeds – York
All rather too Sulzery for my tastes!

Tuesday 02/03/82
Whilst working early shift, I learned that 40106 was on The Bangor …
86329 1500 Euston – Crewe
47536 1725 Crewe – Llandudno Junction, 10’ late, weak loco.
40106 1944 Llandudno Junction – Crewe, 10’ late -> 4’ early.
The signalbox controlling the south end of Rhyl station was short staffed due to sickness, and was being worked on a single 12-hour shift. It was closed when we arrived, so to depart from Rhyl we had to propel back to the west end of the station (where the signalbox was still working normally), then storm through the middle road. At Manchester I went to a pub then favoured by many railway staff, the Three Legs of Man. It was by reputation a “local pub for local people”. It was particularly notable for having “lock ins” at a time when closing time was notionally 2230. Suffice be it to say that my next move was the 0120 Manchester – Cleethorpes papers, and I don’t remember a great deal about it. (More of that tomorrow) …

Sunday 02/03/86
Continuing my desperate bash flapping haphazardly around bits of England:
73103 0310 Waterloo – Portsmouth & Southsea via Woking, Guildford
1128 + 1131 Portsmouth Harbour – Salisbury
33052 0944 Salisbury – Westbury
(My notes describe this as the 0917 Salisbury to Exeter, diverted, retimed, and terminating short! It was also a rake of air-conditioned stock, which 33s aren’t supposed to work).
Bus Westbury – Bristol Temple Meads
Class 117 DMU Bristol Temple Meads – Birmingham New Street via Bath Spa, Swindon (reverse), Gloucester, Worcester, Hartlebury
So we have reached late afternoon, and I haven’t had a loco-hauled train for the past 6 hours.
47433 1612 Birmingham New Street – Burton on Trent via Lifford, Camp Hill, Saltley
I alighted at Burton on Trent to cover the Sundays Only 1521 Leeds – Portsmouth, which was a train known to produce the odd surprise.
45130 1722 Burton on Trent – Coventry via Lichfield TV HL, Stechford
There was a fair bit of interesting track involved in the last two trips. Unsurprisingly the 45 came off at an unscheduled loco change at Coventry. It would have been novel to have a Peak to Portsmouth Harbour, but it wasn’t to be.
86316 1840 Coventry – Euston via Northampton
When in London, a few trips on the Gatwick Express was a semi-mandatory requirement:
73121 2030 Victoria – Gatwick Airport
73126 2105 Gatwick Airport – Victoria
73126 2200 Victoria – Gatwick Airport
I dossed the night in the departures lounge at Gatwick Airport, and the following morning took EMUs 7313 + 7392 from Gatwick to East Croydon to carry on bashing …

Thursday 02/03/95
I had worked a long day in London, then had time to dash home, and head back to London to catch the Glasgow sleeper, en route to a meeting at Mossend:
43124 + 43125 2029 Reading – Paddington
87004 2330 Euston – Carstairs
This ran 140’ late, following a very slow freight service north of Carlisle.

Sunday 02/03/97
43002 + 43016 0926 Reading – Paddington
55022 1105 Kings Cross – Lincoln Central via Newark Northgate
55022 1748 Lincoln Central – Kings Cross via Newark Northgate
43133 + 43143 2100 Paddington - Reading

In all my time in Brum I never even saw a Crompton at New Street, never mind getting one for haulage in the West Midlands.

Yorkshire yes. Cumbria yes. West Midlands no.
