SATURDAY 26th FEBRUARY 1977:

THE END: The final Western railtour - the Western Tribute - unbelievably 45 years ago today!

7343/7053/7345 Petersfield-Waterloo (05 23 from Portsmouth Harbour)
1013 "Western Ranger" + 1023 "Western Fusilier" Paddington-Swansea-Plymouth-Paddington (via Severn Tunnel in both directions and returning via Westbury avoider)

IIRC, the special was shadowed by the two other Westerns still in service - 1041 "Western Prince" and 1048 "Western Lady" - running light engine coupled together in case of failure - but, in the event, they were not needed as 1013 and 1023 performed faultlessly throughout. We overtook the standby locos at Bristol, while en route from Swansea to Plymouth. The scenes on arrival back at Paddington late in the evening were unprecedented and difficult to describe. The shouting, singing and arm-waving went on long into the night, even after the locos had returned light engine to Old Oak Common and was remniscent of a football cup final. I don't know what the few 'normals' who were still around at that time of night must have thought was going on! We missed our last train back from Waterloo, having decided to drown our sorrows in a pub in the West End and you'll find out tomorrow how we eventually arrived home.

.............
I was there at Paddington to see the arrival of the last use of Westerns. The platform was fairly full !. I still feel sad thinking about it. My favourite class of Locomotive. Hard to believe it was 45 years ago !. A lot of water (and other classes) have passed under the bridge now !.
SUNDAY 29th FEBRUARY 1976:

A leap year day trip to Cornwall in search of Westerns. My friends and I travelled from Petersfield to Reading via Guildford the previous evening and then took the overnight - on the cushions - Westwards:

47 113 Reading-Plymouth via Bristol (23 45 Paddington-Penzance)
1068 "Western Reliance" Plymouth-Penzance (23 45 Paddington-Penzance)
50 028 Penzance-Plymouth
1051 "Western Ambassador" Plymouth-Reading via Westbury (including single line working from Dawlish Warren to Starcross for engineering works)
DEMU Reading-Guildford
EMU Guildford-Petersfield

Unfortunately I didn't record which train(s) we travelled back on from Penzance to Reading.

After this trip I totted-up my Western haulage and mileage up until 1st March 1976:

1006 "Western Stalwart": Paddington-Reading (36 miles)
1025 "Western Guardsman": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1033 "Western Trooper": Paddington-Reading (36 miles) and Birmingham New Street-Reading (94.5 miles), (Total: 130.5 miles)
1041 "Western Prince": Paddington-Reading (36 miles)
1043 "Western Duke": Newport-Cardiff Central (11.75 miles) and Reading-Paddington (36 miles), (Total:47.75 miles)
1047 "Western Lord": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1051 "Western Ambassador": Plymouth-Reading via Westbury (189.5 miles)
1052 "Western Viceroy": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1053 "Western Patriarch": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1063 "Western Monitor": Plymouth-Newton Abbot (32 miles)
1067 "Western Druid": Reading-Paddington (36 miles)
1068 "Western Reliance": Plymouth-Penzance (79.5 miles) Grand total: 747.25 miles.

Over the course of the following year, while the class were being run-down for final withdrawal, I managed to have rides behind several more Westerns - including 1010, 1013, 1022, 1023, 1037, 1044, 1048, 1054, 1056, 1071 and 1072 - plus some more mileage behind some of those listed above, taking my total mileage to over 1,500....but I haven't yet been able to find my records for that period yet.
There are a few Westerns there I remember including my favourite - D1067 Western Druid.

45040 1706 Leeds – York
40057 1925 York – Leeds
46046 1906 Leeds – York
I’m a bit confused as to what order I had these in, whether some very late running was involved, or what. If I really had them in this order, then 46046 must have been a good hour late. Alternatively it might have been:
45040 1706 Leeds – York
DMU York - Leeds
46046 1906 Leeds – York
40057 1925 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – York

Saturday 03/03/79
43078 + 43095 1620 Harrogate – Leeds
Normally the inward working was a through train from Kings Cross, but in this instance the set arrived ECS at 1628. On the journey we struck a pile of tubular steel chairs which had been deliberately placed on the track at Headingley. 15’->28’ late.
40028 1805 Leeds – Settle
40186 (+40023 dead) 1953 Settle – Leeds.
The 1610 Glasgow Central – Nottingham was 40023, but it had failed at Kilmarnock with a traction motor fault. It was shunted off at Kilmarnock to be replaced by 40186, but then it was put back on as 40186 didn’t have a working train heat boiler. At Carlisle the driver’s assistant declined the option to sit alone on 40023 as a boiler operator, so 40023 was shut down and dragged dead (and cold) the rest of the way. 140’ late. Quite a fester at Settle.

Monday 03/03/80
40159 2000 Kings Cross – York via Selby
3’->14’ late, replaced at York by 47408, due to vacuum difficulties. 92 mph achieved south of Peterborough, despite load 12.

Wednesday 03/03/82
I had navigated my way unsteadily from the Three Legs of Man to Piccadilly station and poured myself onto the 0120 Cleethorpes papers:
40044 0120 Manchester Piccadilly – Doncaster
Amazingly I woke up as planned at Doncaster, and headed south, ready for another day at work:
47130 0311 Doncaster – Kings Cross

Monday 03/03/86
Still on my desperate bash flapping haphazardly around bits of England:
33030 0548 East Croydon – Uckfield
33030 0711 Uckfield – London Bridge
87026 0905 Euston – Birmingham New Street
87011 1110 Birmingham New Street – Crewe “The Clansman”, via Aston, Bescot, Wolverhampton
Prototype Sprinter 150 001 Crewe – Stoke
85015 1354 Stoke on Trent – Stockport
55006 (Bubble Car) Stockport – Stalybridge
45146 1503 Stalybridge – Leeds
47625 1605 Leeds – Carlisle
87027 1943 Carlisle – Glasgow Central

Friday 03/03/95
… still en route to my meeting in Mossend …
87025 0600 Carstairs – Motherwell, 133’ late.
91016 1614 Motherwell – Kings Cross via Edinburgh, Hambleton
43127 + 43187 2230 Paddington – Reading

Friday 03/03/00
I was at work in London when I got the tip that the 1418 Brighton – Blackpool North was going to be a 37 today, following a failure:
2413 Waterloo – Haslemere
37602 1459 Haslemere – Reading via Guildford, Wokingham

Having reached York from Kings Cross behind 40159, I waited and waited, covering all southbound services in the hope of something other than a 47 to take me south. My last hope was the 2035 Aberdeen – Kings Cross, which was officially a set down only stop. That rolled in with a 47 as well … but at least it’s required.
47257 0337 York – Kings Cross via Selby
This was 12’ late ex York, 6’ early into Kings Cross. 47257 lives on to this day as D1935, owned by Locomotive Services Limited at Crewe.
After work, a little run on the Master Cobbler:
85030 1723 Euston – Bletchley
Viewed the prototype APT on test at Bletchley.
86259 1806 Bletchley – Euston
Then I had to pass through Kings Cross on my way home, so I just thought I’d check to see what was about… oh dear, time for another overnight:
40066 2000 Kings Cross – Doncaster
Loco removed at Doncaster, no heat, and replaced by:
47265 2233 Doncaster – York via Selby, 20’ late.
(Wednesday 05/03/80)
I didn’t have quite so long to wait for something decent to turn up this time:
55019 0244 York – Kings Cross via Selby

Wednesday 04/03/81
55017 1805 Kings Cross – Peterborough
55017 subsequently failed at Newark Northgate, and the train terminated there.
40068 2115 Peterborough – York, 0->10’ late, mostly station overtime.
55015 2320 York – Leeds

Thursday 04/03/82
I had to make a brief visit to Reading. Naturally, I chose my traction carefully:
50032 0745 Paddington – Reading
This was due to stop at Slough, but the driver forgot. The guard put the brake in as we passed through on the Down Fast, and after discussion with the driver, the train pulled forward to Taplow. There, the passengers who wanted to alight at Slough were able to return on a DMU service. We waited a little longer, as a DMU arrived from the Slough direction, conveying those passengers (amongst others) who had intended boarding our train at Slough. When they saw our train was still waiting for them, they hurried out of the DMU, and into the subway to join our train … at which point the guard gave the driver the tip, and we stormed quickly out of the platform, trying to make up for lost time. So the passengers who had missed our train at Slough had a second chance to miss it at Taplow. Angrily they turned tail and dashed back through the subway, just in time to miss the DMU that had brought them from Slough as well. Not a good morning for them, I feel.
47061 0931 Reading – Paddington

Monday 4th March 1985; After arriving on the overnight ferry at Dunkerque, an interesting trip as the ship was very busy with Frenchmen returning home after a Five Nations Rugby match, the journey continued:
BB66408 0536 Dunkerque Maritime- Paris Gare du Nord (to Dunkerque Ville)
BB16042 ditto (from Dunkerque Ville)
RER to Paris Gare de Lyon
TGV 17 1023 Paris Gare de Lyon-Toulon (to Marseille St Charles)
BB9306 1654 Marseilles St Charles-Bordeaux (to Narbonne)

Finally I was able to get a decent night's sleep, in a hotel bed, at Narbonne ! (And we sampled escargot for dinner too)

I had reached Leeds behind 55015 on the 1630 ex Aberdeen, so my choices of exit were limited. Basically I could either go forward on the “Bangor Mails” to Stockport / Crewe, or I could do the 0050 portion to Doncaster for a run up the ECML. I chose the latter:
31279 0050 Leeds – Doncaster
55009 0310 Doncaster – Kings Cross
After working early shift I came out again:
40025 1630 Kings Cross – Peterborough
On arrival at Peterborough I walked forward with the idea of taking a photo of 40025. The driver leaned out of the cab window, saying (in a broad East Anglian accent):
“’ere Boy, d’ya want a Pheasant?” whilst dangling the blood-spattered mangled carcase of a pheasant at me. “Came straight through here it did” and he leaned out through where the centre cab window of the 40 should have been. The 40 had struck the pheasant whilst doing a little over 90 mph across the Fens, smashed the cab window, and impaled itself on the engine room bulkhead. There was blood, feathers, and broken glass liberally distributed about the place. I declined his kind offer of a free bird to roast!
55018 1906 Peterborough – Grantham
55017 1936 Grantham – Kings Cross
This was 10’ late, as the preceding Edinburgh – Kings Cross HST had made an unscheduled stop to take water at Grantham, to try to revive the dead front power car. After about 20 minutes they were unsuccessful, and the HST limped slowly forward on just one power car, barely able to restart on the ascent to Stoke Summit.

Saturday 05/03/83
CFPS “Silver Jubilee” railtour
40086 + 40084 0830 York – Euston via Leeds, Healey Mills, Stalybridge, Guide Bridge, Stockport

47404 2344 Crewe – Stafford

Thursday 05/03/92
I ended a 2-week long trip to East Germany and Poland by crossing the Channel on the jetfoil, and making a tight unadvertised connection into the 1422 Dover Wester Docks – Liverpool, to take me home to Reading:
47808 1422 Dover Western Docks – Reading via Dartford, Sidcup, Hither Green, Nunhead, Factory Jn, Kensington Olympia, Willesden SW Siding, Acton

777 1354 Littlehampton – Portsmouth & Southsea
777 1807 Portsmouth & Southsea – Waterloo via Haslemere
43042 + 43xxx 2015 Paddington – Reading, 35’ late.

Sunday 05/03/00
30506 1255 Alresford – Medstead & Four Marks
33208 1355 Medstead & Four Marks – Alresford, 20’ late
57011 + 33109 1425 Alresford – Medstead & Four Marks, 25’ late
37906 1455 Medstead & Four Marks – Alresford
Word filtered through that there was a class 66 working a passenger train from Southampton to New Street, so I got a lift in a van as far as Basingstoke, hoping to intercept it. No such luck. Never mind, the 57 and 37/9 were both new.

37092 1810 Ely – Liverpool Street

Saturday 06/03/82
47465 1050 Paddington – Evesham
50004 1445 Evesham – Worcester Shrub Hill
50004 1603 Worcester Shrub Hill – Oxford
47515 1736 Oxford – Birmingham New Street via Coventry
86220 1913 Birmingham New Street – Wolverhampton
86250 2001 Wolverhampton – Birmingham New Street
45129 2032 Birmingham New Street – Cheltenham Spa
45113 2221 Cheltenham Spa – Birmingham New Street
45xxx 23xx Bromsgrove – Blackwell (Lickey banker)
47483 2350 Birmingham New Street – Crewe via Soho, Perry Barr, Bescot, Cannock, Rugeley

The day started off as a day trip to the countryside with my girlfriend, but once we returned from Worcester, she carried on to Paddington with 50004 whilst I headed north for an overnight, specifically to do the Cannock diversion.

Sunday 06/03/83
After the CFPS Silver Jubilee railtour the previous day, I had to do an overnight on my way back to York. I chose the Bristol – Glasgow overnight to Preston, for the corresponding southbound service:
86324 0047 Stafford – Preston
85040 0440 Preston – Crewe
47432 05xx Crewe – Birmingham New Street via Cannock
25051 06xx Pilot from Stafford
50019 0758 Birmingham New Street – Bristol Temple Meads via Solihull, Didcot station (reverse), Bath Spa
I had hoped this train would take the Foxhall Curve at Didcot, but apparently there had been a plant breakdown at the power station, so there were trains parked on the curve awaiting acceptance.
47478 1349 Bristol Temple Meads – Birmingham New Street via Lickey
47165 1640 Birmingham New Street – Leeds via Moorthorpe, Viaduct
45064 2013 Leeds – York

Tuesday 06/03/84
I was working early shift in Leeds Control. That normally required me to stay overnight in Leeds, as the 0700 start meant there was no train from York that got me there early enough. Today there was a 40 out on the Pennines, complicating matters:
40024 1500 Leeds – York
This was the 1115 Bangor – Scarborough, and was booked to come off at York for fuel. 40024 was taken off diagram and put onto the 1710 York – Manchester, a peak-hour additional which called at some intermediate stations over the Pennines. I could only take it back as far as Leeds:
40024 1710 York – Leeds
… then home for tea …
47448 1801 Leeds – York
… and back to Leeds to my digs once more …
47450 2023 York – Leeds
If 40024 had stuck to diagram it would have gone forward to Scarborough and returned to (I think) Liverpool, so I could have sacrificed my trip home for tea and had a higher mileage off it. I suppose I should be glad it reappeared at all.

Sunday 06/03/94
A diesel gala day on the Mid Hants Railway:
5217 (25067) 0916 Alresford – Alton
6535 (33116) 1005 Alton - Alresford
45132 1056 Alresford – Alton
7018 1205 Alton – Alresford
1524 (47004) + 5217 (25067) 1256 Alresford – Alton
5353 (27007) 1405 Alton – Ropley
37892 1440 Ropley – Alton
37892 + 5217 (25067) 1525 Alton – Alresford
Seven different classes of loco present – something for everybody there.

FRIDAY 6th MARCH 1981:

A trip out to Garelochhead and back after work to pay my respects to good old D5406, which was still playing out on the Oban line amongst all the class 37 interlopers:

303 012 Hyndland-Argyle Street (08 05 Milngavie-Lanark)
27 042 18 21 Glasgow QS HL-Garelochhead (to Oban. Consist: SC4159/4906/3985/14000 Load 4 VB/SH)
37 112 Garelochhead-Dumbarton Central (16 03 Mallaig/17 25 Fort William-Glasgow QS HL/Euston. (Consist: SC14001/4251/1812/M21238/3952/2825
/2581 Load 7 VB/SH)
303 009 Dumbarton Central-Hyndland via Yoker (21 52 Helensburgh Central-Airdrie)

SUNDAY 6th MARCH 1983:

A diversion over the Paisley Canal line shortly before its imminent closure:

303 011/039 Hyndland-Glasgow QS LL (13 40 Helensburgh Central-Airdrie)
27 109 15 05 Glasgow Central-Johnstone (to Stranraer) via Paisley Canal (Consist: SC26192/M35483/E26159/SC25386/25448/24844 Load 6 VB/SH)
SC552005/59804/52031 Johnstone-Glasgow Central via Paisley Canal (14 45 from Ayr)
303 009 Glasgow QS LL-Hyndland (17 37 High Street-Balloch Central)

I would happily have gone all the way to Stranraer and back with the 27 had it not been for the fact that I and some friends had booked to go to a Battlefield Band gig at Partick Town Hall that evening!

25235 Prestatyn to Man Vic

Don't know what I took to Prestatyn, how I got back from Vic or even why I did this move. Neither RailGen nor Class 25 Action can help with the service.

Going via Paisley Canal, towards Ayr, sounds absolutely nuts these days, but oh so funky. I never knew the line continued beyond Canal, my first visit to Scotland was in November 2004 so it was all very different.

CW2's post about the diversion at Didcot made me realise it's been a long time since the days of MGR trains, and I'm feeling a wee bit old this morning with a boatload of nostalgia for the days when coal trains were all over the place and Didcot power station was still there!

I rarely post on this thread, all my memories are too recent to feel worthy of inclusion here, but I still read all the posts to see what outrageous things people got up to! As always, I'm enjoying the reads and keep them coming :D

Oh dear!

A wagon on the front and a wagon on the back!

I had hoped this train would take the Foxhall Curve at Didcot,

The only time I have done that curve was on the CFPS Christmas Cracker 2 railtour. Purists would therefore say that I can't count it.

Given the modern day (well, I last went there in the mid 2000s) Stranraer, and I doubt it was much better back then, I would approve as well. I'm not versed in the choice of music, admittedly!
