WEDNESDAY 22nd FEBRUARY 1978:

The South-West of England was still blanketed in snow and ice - and Cromptons were still assisting early morning Portsmouth Direct trains:

33 001 + 5936/7836/7711 Petersfield-Liphook (06 13 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo)
7809/7819/7742 Liphook-Waterloo (06 23 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo)
4658/4664 08 30 Waterloo-Wimbledon (to Epsom)
7804/7710/7703 Wimbledon-Woking (16 42 Waterloo-Basingstoke/Alton)
7337/7058/7385 Woking-Petersfield (16 50 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour)

SUNDAY 22nd FEBRUARY 1981:

After spending the night with friends in Hampshire, I returned to London for lunch and the afternoon with my girlfriend, before roaring back towards Scotland overnight:

7410/7057/7421 Petersfield-Waterloo (09 50 from Portsmouth Harbour)
85 005 22 15 Euston-Carlisle (Consist: E80986/M81352/2032/2584/2014/2639/2636/2524/4988/3961/4826/15930/16068/25781/16233

22nd February 1986

Due to the overnight icy conditions, we arrived late into Glasgow, and so I was unable to join @NorthWestRover behind 37402 on 1S07. This also meant that I would not be able to reach Mallaig - the stated destination on my ticket. Still plenty of syphoning opportunities...

37411 Glasgow QS - Crianlarich 1Y11 (who was that desperate crank boarding at Arrochar & Tarbert? :D )
37422 Crianlarich - Arrochar & Tarbert 1T12
37409 Arrochar & Tarbert - Fort William 1Y21

I had hooked up with the board game players by this point (well, one of them in particular) - they were spending the night in a hostel somewhere and head back the next day, so were able to complete a journey to Mallaig. While we were waiting for the onward train, we left our bags on the train and had a leg stretch. In the meantime, the 37 shunted the stock from one platform to another. This meant that for several years my bag had more 37/4 mileage than me!

37409 Fort William - Glenfinnan 2Y55
37405 Glenfinnan - Glasgow QS 1T46
47450 Glasgow Central - Carlisle 1V62

This came off at Carlisle, but what would get me back to Brum? To be concluded tomorrow...

Edit: This was the only time I had 37411 for haulage, so if I hadn't missed 1S07 I might never have had it!

22nd February 1992

86252 New St - Wolves
47550 Wolves - Wellington

I persuaded a mate to come with me to watch Gateshead away at Telford United. It finished 0-0. That's the last time he came with me to a Gateshead game!

22nd February 1998

37412 Newport - New St

A nice way to head back after a few days in South Wales.

I've had a rummage through the "archive" (selection of plastic boxes filled to the brim with old notebooks) and can't trace my original notebook for that time, so I'd be grateful if you could add any further route details.

I definitely did do the route advised on one of the ADEX trips to the Southern sometime between September 1975 (when I first moved to York) and 1979 (when my better notes begin). It was pretty crazy, going up the chord at Canonbury then eastbound around the North London Line, to then do a loop around Stratford and back through Canonbury again westbound this time. If you have any better route / mileage info, I'd be very pleased to receive it.

So were you a resident of York in the late 70s, or from further afield?
Interesting you live in Gourock now. I was there myself 1984-87 in a flat overlooking the seafront, my first family home, while I worked at Glasgow Control. The merits of Gourock at the time were that it was relatively cheap, the views were superb, and there was a good train service. I'd guess not much has changed.
The routing of the ADEX was:
York, Leeds, Wakefield Westgate, Moorthorpe, Barrow Hill, Toton, Brent Junction, Acton Central, Kew East Junction, Clapham Junction, Stewarts Lane, Brixton, Bickley Junction & Orpington. I have made it out as 296 miles to Folkestone. You will have obviously enjoyed further mileage with 47255 to Dover!
In 4/7/76 I was on Mystery Excursion from York to Southend Central (47448 was the motive power). This went via the ECML to Finsbury Park, then Canonbury to Stratford, then onto Barking. Do you know if you were on this train.
I am originally from York, retired to the Cowal Peninsula; my closest station is Gourock which I can see from my house through a good pair of binoculars!

I was just thinking what a poor end to the day!

The rather rare track, which I've only had the fortune to do with 170s in each direction during a blockade at the east end of Birmingham New Street in January 2005 (same and only day I've had a 350 over the eastbound curve from Soho to Perry Barr, I forget the exact names of junctions, on a diversion from Birmingham New Street to Stetchford), well that must have been a highlight for anyone surely?

I'd happily have a 31 over a 170, that much I can promise you! Yes the AC on the 170 would be nice, but the noise of a 31 sounds way too much fun to be turned down. I guess for me it might help I didn't grow up with them around? Still, it would be fun!

We had some great trips out with LUTRS back then, usually benefitting from a subsidy from the Students Union to assist with 'travel costs' - I don't recall who all went on Western Requiem perhaps @Shrop and @Peterthegreat and maybe some other lurkers on here too.
Greetings @Cheshire Scot yes I do believe I was on that trip into the Welsh Valleys.
Indeed we did have some memorable trips, and that was certainly one of them!

Being less than complementary about 31s is just a bit of a running joke amongst many of us old-school cranks. Made even better by having an actual Goyle Basher in our midst.

Would I take one ahead of plastic? For sure!

I've only done that curve a couple of times too.

MONDAY 23rd FEBRUARY 1981:

Having roared down the WCML overnight behind 85 005, it was time to give way to a Duff for the last part of the journey:

Thanks once more for that, and the extra details. I never did Southend loco-hauled. There always seemed to be better things to do than sit behind a 47 all the way from York or Leeds to Southend.

Anyway, here's today's contribution:
Friday 23/02/79
45017 1126 York – Leeds
46020 1707 Leeds – York, 10’ late, weak loco.
47527 1711 York – Doncaster via Selby, 67’ late.
55011 1836 Doncaster – York via Selby, 45’ late. Running One Engine Only, and covering for the cancelled 1615 FO Kings Cross – York.
This was the only run I ever recorded with 46020.

Tuesday 23/02/82
Word had reached me that my pet 40, 40069, had been on the Manchester – Cleethorpes papers the past few nights, and was allocated again tonight. Now there was a risk to this, as although the 0120 Manchester Piccadilly – Cleethorpes conveyed passenger accommodation, it was unadvertised, so it was at the discretion of the guard as to whether or not you could travel. At least as a railway employee I stood a better chance than when I was a mere basher. I set off north to chance my luck.
86244 1900 Euston – Crewe
86206 2221 Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly

Friday 23/02/90
The following day – Saturday 24/02/90 – was a diesel gala day on the S&C, so I had to position myself at Carlisle for it. So after working late shift at Paddington, there was a superb way of getting there:
87101 2350 Euston – Carlisle
Unfortunately this was not the smooth night’s sleep I had anticipated. We ran at 20 mph from signal to signal south of Rugby, following the preceding 2345 Euston – Edinburgh with a hot axle box. Then later whilst climbing Shap we were involved in a SPAD (Signal Passed At Danger), and nearly rear-ended a stationary Freightliner service. Quite an eventful and bumpy night (although we avoided the major bump hazard on Shap!).

Wednesday 23/02/94
This was another steam railtour attempting to get to Bradford Forster Square, after the previous attempt on 9th February had failed.
47759 0725 Reading – Didcot
34027 0815 Didcot – Sheffield via Solihull, Saltley, Derby.
Terminated at Sheffield 90’ late, due to overwhelming snow and ice. (See, it’s not just a modern phenomenon). Once again, we got nowhere near Bradford Forster Square, and gave up.
43180 + 43086 1515 Sheffield – Birmingham New Street, 60’ late.
47845 1706 Birmingham New Street – Reading via Coventry, 45’ late.

Fair enough, I see it as the banter it is intended as now :)

It's been way too long since my last 31, I can't even recall which one it was or when the occasion was now. I want to say it was on a SVR gala, a few years ago, but the gala I know I had one there was when it was still in Fragonset colours and that was a long time ago now! Last mainline 31, that was probably an unidentified 31 in Wessex Trains days from Bristol Temple Meads to Brighton and that goes back all the way to October 2004 o_O More than 17 years, oh my that makes me feel old!

I've had 33s that were more recent than that, and I don't end up with a 33 too often either!

So the ETH Duff got ripped at Carlisle. Here's how the journey continued through the night...

47529 Carlisle - Preston (via S&C) 1V62
47497 Preston - Crewe (via Earlstown) 1V62
47430 Crewe - New St 1V62

Four ETH Duffs for haulage without having to budge from my seat. The little wiggle via Earlstown was nice. Unlike the traction.

46039 0915 York – Leeds
47480 1004 Leeds – York
46054 1126 York – Leeds
This was running 40’ late. 46054 was wired as No Heat from Durham, so York had sent 47547 off the shed to re-engine it. However that had to be used to replace NB 47373 on the 1020 Newcastle – Kings Cross, so 46054 had to carry on to Leeds. By Leeds, the boiler on 46054 was working fine, but (thankfully) they decided to change locos anyway …
40032 1202 Leeds – Liverpool Lime Street 45’ late.
I met an understanding ex-girlfriend in Liverpool and arranged to stay at her place overnight.
508 xxx Birkenhead – Liverpool Central

Sunday 24/02/80
87034 2035 Euston – Manchester Piccadilly via Birmingham New Street, Crewe
Time for some beers in Manchester before rolling up at Victoria to cover the 0055 to York.

Wednesday 24/02/82
I had come all the way to Manchester to cover the 0120 to Cleethorpes. Would it be 40069 as allocated? Would I be able to get on board?
40069 0120 Manchester Piccadilly – Doncaster via Romiley, New Mills, Sheffield, Masborough.
My pet 40, and my first 40 of the year, over some required 40 track. Sadly I couldn’t take it any further than Doncaster, as I had to be back at work in the morning.
47203 0311 Doncaster – Kings Cross
After work, there was another strike about to start, so it was time for another trip to Ireland to escape the chaos, doing so with an 81 on the 2055 Stranraer before dropping back onto the Irish Mail from Crewe:
81009 2055 Euston – Crewe

90019 1530 Carlisle – Crewe
This suffered a 30 minute delay at Penrith due to the DVT deconfiguring.
37428 1801 Crewe – Cardiff
43133 + 43126 2119 Cardiff – Reading

I had stayed overnight in Liverpool. It being a Sunday, the aim was to get to Manchester Victoria to cover the 1800 to Newcastle, which was booked a 40. But there’s a bonus:
40012 1555 Liverpool Lime Street – Manchester Victoria
30’ late due to vandalism and track circuit failures.
40119 1800 Manchester Victoria – Leeds via Todmorden, Mirfield.
I believe this was an unplanned diversion, due to some over-running engineering work on the Diggle route. We were held at Mirfield for a connecting bus to arrive from Huddersfield. The loco was removed at Leeds, because of a boiler pipe fracture. I never had it again – it was withdrawn the following year.
Whatever re-engined this at Leeds didn’t take my fancy, so I hung around to see if the 1815 Liverpool – Newcastle would be any better:
45064 2006 Leeds – York, 40’ late (having also been diverted via Todmorden).

Monday 25/02/80
The 0055 Manchester Victoria – York duly produced:
40116 0055 Manchester Victoria – Leeds
31188 0218 Leeds – York
47421 0337 York – Kings Cross, 10’ early arrival.

Thursday 25/02/82
Another Irish jaunt, avoiding strike-ridden BR:
234 0725 Dun Laoghaire – Howth
202 0840 Howth – Dublin Connolly
076 1025 Dublin Heuston – Kildare
083 1202 Kildare – Waterford
083 1510 Waterford – Dublin Heuston
080 1820 Dublin Connolly – Bray
227 1858 Bray – Shankill
234 1909 Shankill – Bray
213 1918 Bray – Dun Laoghaire
… and back onto the night sailing to Holyhead.

Tuesday 25/02/86
Another 37/4 on the 1715 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh:
37422 1715 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
47713 2000 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street

Wednesday 25/02/87
After working a late shift, I had to head south to attend a funeral, so I intercepted the Inverness – Euston overnight:
DMU Glasgow Queen Street – Dunblane
47492 2233 Dunblane – Carstairs
87001 2350 Carstairs – Euston

Monday 25/02/91
There was a required Freightliner 90 on hire to Anglia:
90046 1935 Liverpool Street – Manningtree
86250 2123 Manningtree – Liverpool Street
This is where things took a turn for the worse. I boarded the 2320 Paddington – Oxford intending to alight at Reading for the 10-minute stroll home from there. What “transpired” was that I fell into a deep sleep, and was awoken by staff after the train arrived and terminated at Oxford! Dreaming spires indeed!
47714 2320 Paddington – Oxford
(Tuesday 26/02/91)
DMU 0356 Oxford – Reading
A very unpleasant overnight in an unheated waiting shelter. Not one of my better moves!

Thursday 25/02/99
47847 + 47851 1418 Paddington – Reading
47847 was defective and was intended to be dragged dead back north for attention. Unfortunately the locos had been coupled at Old Oak Common with 47847 leading ex Paddington, so it was doing all the work. We were delayed at Royal Oak by the driver attending to 47847, which got going again then suffered a spectacular traction motor flashover at Westbourne Park whilst attempting to accelerate on full power, with flames and sparks shooting sideways across the adjacent tracks. Amazingly the driver (sat on the opposite side from the flashover/explosion) didn’t notice a thing, other than a temporary loss of power. At the scheduled stop at Slough I went forward to tell the driver what had happened, as he had noticed a sudden loss of power but knew nothing about the flashover. Fortunately there was a driver’s assistant in the cab, so he went back to (previously unmanned) 47851, and the locos worked in tandem from Slough. 20’ late.

I took my son on a trip to Leamington, for some class 50 haulage. The pair of 47s, on our return working (Poole-Newcastle) after the reversal at Birmingham, was a regular Saturday duty at that time.
