'Ruabon Tunnel' and 'Northgate Street Tunnel' are another two strange destinations I've seen on their Journeycheck site tonight.

The second most surprising thing I've seen on ATW Journey Check today is:

Caersws: Ticket Vending Machine problem
The ticket vending machines are out of order at Caersws station.

It has a machine!?

The most surprising thing however was

2235 Holyhead to Northgate Street Tunnel due 2330
This train will be cancelled between Chester and Cardiff Central due to temporary speed restrictions as a result of heat.

Caersws has had a machine for probably nearly a year, and it has probably been broken spasmodically for over half that time! It was very sensibly (NOT) placed to take all the weather from the south west so the ticket drawer is often full of water and the screen develops a mind of it's own when it's wet.
And guess what? It rains a lot in Caersws!!
Why they could fit it inside the "shelter" or even under the cover by the old signal box and ticket office I do not know!!

Even if it was sheltered it still wouldn't work - it's not just the Caersws one that's bad, network wide they've been terrible.

Somebody tweeted ATW Twitter today that machine at Caersws accepting money but not giving out tickets.

ATW Stakeholder team went rather coy when probed about them and were non committal on how much they were or weren't used. Conductors on the Cambrian still issue on board without sticking to the rules and barrier staff at Shrewsbury are OK about issuing tickets.

The RPI's that did a sweep at Welshpool a few weeks back got an earful about the TVM.

Almost exclusively. Last night I caught the train from Swansea at 1858 and it was something that has become rare on this service a 158. A nice surprise.

I much prefer a 158 to a 175, perhaps because i travel on 175s so much i get fed up of them but I was thinking the other day how tired the 175s are looking compared to a 158. Time for a refresh i think.

Was going to catch the 1930 from Manchester this evening to time it with the last bus in Cardiff but I'm glad I didn't as it was a pair of 153s! (153320+153312).

Thankfully I was blessed with a very quiet 175104!

To be honest i wouldnt mind a 153, ive travelled on them many times and found them ok. I wonder if the pair of 153s continued to Carmarthen which is where the 1930 Manchester ends up or whether it was swapped at Cardiff.

Well they were 30 minutes down at Leominster for some reason so I'm not sure what happened there. Whether they were indeed swapped at Cardiff I don't know :(

Looks like 2 Carmarthen, 1 Machynlleth, 1 Chester and 1 Shrewsbury uncovered. That said, whilst not a defence,I suspect you'll find most TOCs struggle to cover all their jobs this time of year!

Doesn't make it right though!

True that. There's a group route learning at the moment and a pretty constant production line of conductors going through the training centre for the next few months that should help. Also the headcount at one of the depots that's been struggling the most is increasing soon which should mean more spare crew available.

Anyway, I'm doing two cross depot cover rest days this weekend, you can't blame me :p

Which depot is that, out of interest? I might be in the market for looking to change TOC depending on where the vacancies are.

One of the northern depots, I'm not sure if I'm able to share more than that publically. In any case the recruitment campaign has already taking place. Feel free to PM if there's anything I can help with though.

Large number of ATW services affected again today due to shortage of Conductors. Carmarthen Depot seems to be particularly hard hit.

150258 on 1730 Manchester to Cardiff!!!! YUCK!!

Crewe Junction signal box was closed overnight due to staff illness. This meant that the 0449 Crewe - Milford Haven, booked for a 175, had to start from Shrewsbury with a 150. That's the same diagram that forms the 1730 Manchester Cardiff.

That's an interesting one to end up shut!

At least things could still get to and from Shrewsbury from the South.

I was caught up in the conductor shortage last night when 1W96 was axed between Shrewsbury and Chester.
