It's rostered for a Class 158.

The 150s switch between South and North Wales on the last trains at night (21:55 Cardiff-Crewe and 23:08 Shrewsbury-Cardiff).

1V89 - 158
2N23 - 158+150 (sometimes 150+150)
2N29 - 150
2N31 - 150

1V89 used to be 158+150 with the 150 being dropped off at Cardiff but it is now solely a 158.

Any 150 attached to 1V89 is not diagrammed. It is just on occasions when necessary to move a 150 from the North back to Canton out of course for Repairs or Maintenance.

It happened daily two years ago.

Never happens now.

So can only guess it was booked.

Did you see the ATW Diagrams ? I did. Could have been that the 23 08 Shrewsbury to Cardiff could have been affected by Engineering Work and the Unit had to get to Cardiff.

Possibly. I don't know, as to be fair when I saw it the first time (158+150) I indeed thought it was a one-off too. But then I saw it daily at Cardiff when I used to go to school on the 8.31 to Penarth (as it's 8.21 to Maesteg).

On the subject of ATW allocations, what's the situation with that 175 off the 1708 Milford Haven? Does it still run ECS to Newport and attach to 1V58 1730 ex-Manchester back to Cardiff?

No. Goes onto Canton now and back off. I'm not sure if it's the same unit or not as I no longer have access to the Diagrams, although I can work many of them myself. There was difficulty in the past in providing these paths so obviously resolved now.

Just to get my head around the second half of the day in south Wales for the 158s:

1) Works the 14:35 Gloucester-Fishguard and then stays in West Wales

2) Works the 13:30 Fishguard-Cardiff and then heads to Ebbw Vale with the 150 before heading north to Manchester Piccadilly?

3) Works the 14:40 Ebbw Vale-Cardiff and then what does it do? Does it head to Maesteg and then back to Cheltenham?

I can certainly confirm that yesterday a 158 worked the 1615 Cardiff-Maesteg and then back as the 1715 Maesteg-Cheltenham

Correct. After Gloucester to Fishguard and overnight Carmarthen works Pembroke Dock to Newport next morning and becomes (2)

Not as many 158s on Maesteg as there used to be around 5 years ago, which is a good thing IMO when many main line services have 150s when they should be 158s!

Even though all 3 of those diagrams mentioned above are booked for 158s ive often seen a 150 on the evening Fishguard train and I assume then the next morning on Pembroke Dock-Cardiff etc. Unless another 158 happens to arrive into Carmarthen instead of a 175 the night before and they can do a swap.

It's already been stated in the thread that the evening Fishguard 158 works the Pembroke Dock the next day.

I know, i am just saying on many occasions this diagram is replaced by a 150 in lieu of a 158

1920 Maesteg-Cardiff is a 158, which then goes on to form the 2017 Cardiff-Manchester Piccadilly. It then runs empty stock back to Crewe for the night, and is how 158's get swapped from south to north. Southbound is as has previously been mentioned, the 0610 Shrewsbury-Maesteg, although 158s can end up substituting for 175's on pretty much any train during the day if necessary.

It was still on the train crews dockets until recently (last summer's timetable change IIRC) for that attachment to take place at Newport but it hadn't actually happened for quite some time.

Real Time Trains indicates now goes to Canton.

It used to be diagrammed that way before as well. But in practice it tends to use the set off the Maesteg.

Maybe not since last summer but I'm pretty sure that movement was still happening well into last year, going off what I remember from TRUST.

One I haven't checked for ages is the 20:17 Cardiff to Manchester, think it used to leave around 19:50. Is it unheard of now for a 175 to operate this service? I remember around 2008 there was at least one evening when this was worked by two doubled up 175s.

It wouldn't be impossible since the crew who work that service do sign 175's, but the diagram finishes up at Crewe rather than Chester which would be an issue - normally there are no 175's at Crewe overnight. It would also leave the north short a 158 the following morning (the 158 in question runs ECS to Shrewsbury in the morning to form the first Chester service from there). That said, it's not particularly uncommon for a 150 to appear on the 20:17 instead of the 158.

The following service north (21:17 Cardiff-Chester via Crewe) is booked for a single 175, and quite often runs as two sets with the rear locked out.

AFAIK that has changed now. The 158 for the 2017 Cardiff-Manchester now comes ECS from Canton, having worked the 1738 Ebbw Vale-Cardiff. The unit off the Maesteg then goes ECS to Canton.

Is the unit off Maesteg that now goes ECS to Canton booked for a 150 or a 158?

Speaking of the 175s being stabled overnight, i know the majority are in Chester with quite a lot in Carmarthen and Cardiff as they are the natural starting points for the morning services. Do any get kept elsewhere overnight? For example do any get kept in Holyhead/Llandudno Junction or Shrewsbury or do all units up north go back to Chester, just like in West Wales all go to Carmarthen, there are none kept in Milford or Swansea for example.

Should be a single 175 stabled in Holyhead, (works 1V90 in the morning, goes up as 1D19 ex Birmingham) and there's one in Shrewsbury Abbey Foregate overnight (5G28 / 1G28).

None at Llandudno Jn, theres no stabling point anymore. There's sidings at Llandudno Town, but not used at the moment, despite being relaid.

Quite a few stay in Holyhead overnight, about three or four I think. One stays overnight at Shrewsbury AF sidings and I think the rest are in Chester. A few years back 175s used to stay overnight at Barrow, Blackpool and Longsight CS.

The 19 20 ex Maesteg is a 150

Stabled at Holyhead overnight are:-
1 x 158 1H81 05 14 Holyhead to Manchester Picc (another 158 attaches at
(Chester
2 x 175/0 1V92 06 28 Holyhead to Cardiff
1K31 07 15 Holyhead to Crewe
2 x 175/1 1V90 04 25 Holyhead to Cardiff
1V94 08 05 Holyhead to Cardiff

There is a 175 stabled overnight at Llandudno Jn on Saturdays off 19 34 ex Cardiff and stables the Bay Platform (2). This is because it can't go anywhere else at that time due lines closed. Attaches to 08 45 Holyhead to Crewe Sunday morning.

If anybody has more accurate and factual info than this, I stand to be corrected.
