I couldn't really say but it has worked in similar machines in other walks of life than the railways. My main issue was with the comments about some cards being for people with bad credit histories and that plenty of banks offer online cards with none fee paying accounts when if you go to the major high street banks they obviously don't. Anyway, this is way off topic so apologies.

But other walks of life don't involve whizzing* through the countryside while they are trying to take a payment, whith the consequent problems of varying signal quality.

Um... there are plenty of bank accounts on the market which do not charge a fee and issue offline-capable debit cards, and the small percentage of people with online-only cards can still buy at stations or on the internet.

I think one point many are missing in all this is why the OP is carrying less than £3 in cash in the first place? I know students can be on a tight budget but if you know your card may not work would it be so hard to ensure you have a bit of change just in case?

this is really not the issue... method of payment was not the problem. But to answer your question i dont carry cash to uni most of the time so i don't spend it on pointless things like snacks when i have plenty of food at home. Also it's salford... i dont want to get mugged with lots of cash on me

Ha ha, good point. At the same time I do find it amusing that we are discussing here the OP not having cash on him at the same time as there is a thread about why people do, or do not carry cash these days. This is an example of why I don't rely on being able to pay by card.

It's more that Avantix Mobile is 11-year old technology but is not by any means end-of-life, and would incur a tremendous cost to replace for very limited benefit.

Is that connected to why Leeds station hasn't had chip and PIN facilities for a couple of years? Feels really odd every time I sign there.

I wouldn't have to use the manned desk if I could get the cash machines to issue anything smaller than a £20 note or the ticket machines to take a £20 note.

Not as far as I am aware, although someone more local to the area might know better.

But you are okay getting mugged for having no cash on you?

A mugger will mug you and get rather arsey if you dont give them any money probably assaulting you in the process, if you hand over some money at the beginning they probably wont assault you!

That is a good point. I got mugged not far from where I live along with a mate. Neither of us had any money as we had spent it all in pubs in the city centre. We ended up in casualty, I got 21 stitches in the back of my head and my mate got beaten until he was unrecognisable. I would rather have lost a tenner than carry around a scar for 15 years that makes me look like I've had brain surgery.

If he's lucky they'll walk him to the nearest cashpoint. But the likelihood is that they won't as the chances of getting mugged in the short distance between either Uni building and Salford Crescent station is slim. Walking from MediaCity campus is a bit more dodgy, but I've lived in that area and never had any problems.

Regarding your going to the cash machine, did you actually attempt to pay by card first, or just assume the card would not work? This would probably affect how Northern might view this as going to the cash machine might suggest to them that you travelled without actually having the means to pay for the fare.

It's this 'travelling without means to pay' that worries me. If you'd have had money (or a card that works on the train) then this would have been different - what would you have done if the guard on train had asked you to buy a ticket before Piccadilly?

Agree with the advice to settle asap
