You can't both be right!
A 5 car electric set when operating with a 5 car diesel ser away from the wires, will not provide any power to move the train, the 800/2 is effective dead hauling the electric set.

As I said, the 801/1 electric set provides very limited hotel power, ie lighting, toilets etc, in no way what so ever does it provide any traction to move the train.

Out of curiosity, how would 2 X 5 car 801/1 perform on diesel?

They would do the same as what a 9 car 801/2 would do, ie, self rescue, and about 20-30 miles max.
In reality, it would be a distance from where an overhead line issue is, to where the power has been restored.
Furthest they have gone on diesel in passenger use, is about 8 miles.

It's interesting (and no doubt extremely beneficial, so likely in the spec) that the units are set up to have this as a feature of the software.

cut out all the engineering allowances and that's sub 4 hours including the stop.
Back in the 90s GNER had at least one daily service timed at 3h59: 0600 from Edinburgh, calling at Newcastle and York. I used it most Mondays for a while but recall that it didn't make it on time all that often.

Dragged by an 800/2 and not providing any power. The engine on the 801/1 purely providing lighting, and toilet facilities, and power for doors etc.

801s have been used into Kings Cross in service on diesel, as a test prior to the remodelling works when it was thought that there might need to be a platform without wires for one of the stages.
