did the 502s use the single track tubes? its only a requirement in tight single track bores. IIRC the new Thameslink stock will not require end doors as the tight clearances were on the Moorgate branch

Indeed, that's the reason the Totton section was pulled.

Anyone that describes Totton as a "nice quiet neighbourhood" needs a reality check. Do people get stabbed outside convenience stores, or petrol stations get held up, in "nice quiet neighbourhoods"? :|

Anywhere thats close to Southampton is not nice imho but Im biased.

Quelle Surprise! Excuse the cynic in me, but I think that would be seen as a little nest feathering.

Sadly not - when Hammond mentioned the freeze on all stock procurements until the budget is completed, Forster report in and all options looked it, he specifically indicated that the new stock for TPE Scotland routes, LM additional Desiros and the 10-acr SWT plans were all to be scrapped.

My objective, and non-football related, view is that the urban areas of both Southampton and Portsmouth are equally as bad as each other. They've both got copious rows of grim terraced houses and 60s tower blocks and maisonettes.

The ordanance survey map seems to confirm that Ashurst the new forest is part of the Southampton Conurbation

Can you point me in the direction of where he stated that? It's not that I don't believe you - I just want to read the text for myself. Ta.

Try informed sources @ alycidon, or speak to someone who was there!

The latest Informed Sources in Modern Railways puts a question mark by the 10-car project - not yet a definite cancellation. Although I'd be surprised if it wasn't cancelled now.
