Do you mean one unit can provide power to aux on when the batteries on another unit are dead?

If there's 750V between units (or 25kV if the pan is up on a 313) I imagine it would arc and make a bit of a mess every time you couple up.

A 313 is really a 750V DC unit. When under 25kV the transformer output is 750V.

When running on 750V, each power car operates independently, not even providing power to the other power car in the same unit, let alone providing power to another coupled unit. This was due to tunnel regulations for Moorgate (LUL units have similar operation).

It could be that when running under 25kV the 750V transformer output can be shared between units.

As for arcing when you couple up, there is a simple device that would prevent this, known in the industry as an "on/off switch".

The Southern 313s have been modified with a 750v dc bus and the ac connection removed.

The reason why SouthEastern have a few 3-car 375s is because one or more of the platforms at Charing Cross can only handle 11-car 375s. In the rush hours most CX 375s are 11-cars, most Cannon St ones are 12-cars.

465s are only allowed to be 10-cars at CX as the end cars are slightly longer, making a 10-car train a bit more than 200m, so 11 won't fit. There's detail on it in the relavant RUS.

I think it was more to do with Tunbridge Wells only being able to take 11 Carriages apparently? (or so I've heard from some where!)

Although If it means anything I've seen a 24 Car Class 375 (when it was snowing about 4 or 5 years ago 2 eight car trains broke down one after another (hour apart), they connected them to try to move it and then used another one on top of that to get it moving!)

Actually they can do 5; there was a regular 5x/3 ECS working from Lovers Walk to Selhurst and opposite balancing movement twice a week, but I'm not sure if it still runs. I think it got chopped and changed sometime last year with changes to the Coastway diagrams and more /3s up in London.

The Up or down Lovers Q move could be anything from 3 to 12 cars depending on stock/class. The Q is usually a 377 but can sometime be a 313 or 442 if visiting the shops/lathe. Selhurst cannot accept any more than 12 cars on its reception roads, even coming in from Norwood, platforms 5 & 6 only hold 12 only. Any thing longer than 12 would be an out of course move. A 16 car did arrive during the recent snow fall, but that came in via the gullet road and had to have the route cleared in platform 1 at Norwood Junction.
