I'd imagine 59003 could be employed very gainfully on GBRF heavy coal and biomass trains to Drax for example from various east coast ports (especially climbing out of Tyne Dock) but agree that it's probably in a bit of a state after hauling the heaviest stuff in Germany for 10 years so will need a good refurb.

I didn't say anything about ownership.

If GBRf want a 66 badly enough, the right amount of cash will make sure a lease agreement doesn't need to be an obstacle.

I don't see that happening somehow, why would DBS do a favour for one of its main competitors. Besides GBRf 66's are maintained by EMD who already have the knowledge of maintaining such a loco.
In addition the 59 is more powerful which could come in handy on some jobs where you only operate as class 6 anyway hence max 60mph is not an issue.

...and a 59 is basically a US SD40-2 squeezed into a UK body, so shouldn't be hard to maintain anyway (an SD40-2 is pretty bomb-proof - probably EMD's best ever loco, a simple, rugged, do-anything workhorse).

If anyone is interested Bob Tiller of GBRf has announced on GBRf's Facebook page that 59003 will retain its number and name after a coating of GBRf colours.

Just spotted 59003 passing Washwood Heath heading from Water Orton towards Birmingham with a pair of HNRC Class 20s hauling her.
