the good half of 417 that arrived back at Norwich has just been sat around inside the sheds at Crown Point until the other half comes back from Crewe. Obviously 402 had a fault on one coach which meant it could be in service - so the most sensible thing to do it split 402 and pair the good half of 402 with 417 which is sitting around and there you have a hybrid unit - which means NX are not a unit down. So when the faulty car of 402 is repaired, 417 and 402 will be split, then 402 can be reformed as normal.

Im gathering now 417 will sit around NC and if any other 156 units need splitting then that can be added to make up a 2 car unit so no loss of units.

I understood it was to be paired up to a 153 (306 is the unit I heard) until the damaged half of 156417 returns. Being in that formation (which is yet to happen), it would operate a 156 diagram.

How odd that looks! Is the other half the 156 which Central had painted in ScotRail's base colours?

just arrived in Norwich at 1415 on 158865, and there was the following:

57 car from 156417 sat against buffers on Crown Point depot. 156402 poking its nose out of the shed.

153335 and 153314 forming the 1436 Gt Yarmouth service.

150280 sat in platform 5, with doors opening - but not in service.

A few of the 156's are running with very bad wheel flats at the moment, so it wouldn't surprise me if when the Sandite season is over if they struggle for sets while they're being seen to, so they're going to need every vehicle they can get. Posters on WNXX are suggesting that some of the 170's have got bad flats too, and the reinstatement of the loco-hauled set after being split would suggest that this might be right. I don't know if Tottenham Flyer can confirm or not, as he seems to know the ins and outs of the NXEA fleet. :)

I'm not so good with the Crown Point based units. Better with the Ilford ones.

Officially, I know nothing. I do know that the 156's and 153's have been going to Derby, and lately Tyseley for wheelset maintenance. I've not heard of a 170 venturing south to Ilford, or anywhere off NXEA land for tyre turning for a while now.

I keep hearing rumours that the loco hauled set will be finishing next week, and then the week after, but it keeps appearing every now and again so I'll only believe its finished when only 1 47 is left at Norwich.

As for units with wheel flats, find a unit that doesn't have them at the moment (not just NXEA units- across the country). That's something that most units get at this time of year.
I'm sure the guys at Crown Point and Control will do the fantastic job they always do in getting the units sorted out so that disruption to the service is kept to a minimum.

That reminds me of June 2010, when one coach of 156419 was joined to one coach of 156418, so it was a half-CT and half-NXEA livery 156!

156412 has been reformed today, i was at Crown Point this afternoon and 57417 was being split from 52412.

156417 is due back next week, it will be delivered to Dereham station on the MNR and a 153 will go from Norwich to Dereham via Wymondham and the MNR to collect 52417, then 156417 will be run up and down Crown Points yard for mileage accumulation tests, also 153306 goes to Wolverton on Weds as part of the C6 overhaul, then the rest of the units follow in unit order ie: 309, 314, 322 and 335 then once they have been completed the 156 units start.

Great news :)
I wonder if 153306 will be repainted as Greater Anglia claim.
I hope the 3 156s with the tables with the East Suffolk/Wherry/Bittern line maps in the table don't have them removed if they are repainted as they are a lovely addition to the train :P

I thought they were waiting to carry out C6 work in order to make the units DDA compliant with a longer franchise although obviously they won't do this to the 153s.

Forget how small the Anglia class 153 fleet is as well!

I was chatting to 'The Man Who Knows' at NC before Christmas and according to him, all refurbished 15X units will appear in Porterbrook base livery (White with dark Blue doors) and "Greater Anglia" name vinyls. As for interiors, all I gather will happen is a damned good clean and thats it, except the 156's which are to have major internal refurbishment to make them DDA compliant, but that is after the 153's are all done. It still means NC are one unit short, even with 150280 on long-term loan (?) as it can't cover all diagrams as required and sits at Norwich for portions of the day. The new franchisees know about this and the lack of spare DMU's systemwide, but what they do about it is anyones guess.

When people say DDA compliant, do they just mean fitting a lavatory that can take a wheelchair or is there more to it than that?

All went like clockwork today on the MNR. 153335 departed Norwich 10.05 & after waiting to shunt at Wymondham, arrived Dereham around 11.30. 52417 was moved under its own power from the unloading siding across the road & onto 335. Departure time was brought forward to 12.15 & Crown Point reached at 13.40.

Im supprised though, that after all the work that was done to both cars - It wasnt repainted into unbraded white - as apposed to debranded ONE!

I was thinking that aswell. I surprised they didn't modify it to make it DDA compliant while they were rebuilding it as they will be doing with the 156s later in the year/next year.

That's the main chunk of the work I believe, but it should also cover things like having a PIS (Passenger Information System) with internal screens an so on installed, and probably a few other bits and bobs as well like compliant buttons and handrails and signage etc.

Comparing the pictures of the 2 coaches of 156417, the roof of the repaired coach is a totally different shape, not important but noticeable.

Do we know if the 156 refurb will include a new interior, because while the tables with the maps in are lovely the rest of the interior is very tired and the inexplicable removal of the fold-down tables in seat backs has worsened the problem.

Deep cleaning is all the 156s can expect, www,greateranglia.co.uk the answers are all at in the FAQ section,

Nothing much is going to change at all , National Express has vowed to win back the franchise, Interesting times ahead

AFAIK the seat back tables were removed at the request of Porterbrook through 'supply issues' and the fact 'orrible little brats think its very funny to wring them about until the catches bust off.
As for 417, the 52 car has some lovely creases in the sides with fresh paint slapped on them.....
As for the 156 interiors, the plan from Porterbrook is that all 153's will go through a refurbishment first (153335 has already gone; bye-bye Anglia livery....) and once they have been dealt with the 156's will go and have a full refurbishment including the new big bog and access. This is just part of PB's ongoing investment in their own kit and keeping up with legislation. All should reappear in PB 'Base' livery (White with Blue doors like 12139) with whatever branding vinylled on. This means NC will be short of units for the forseeable.....

I thought the white livery was NX unbranded not porterbrook or are they basically the same?

They are one and the same I think, Porterbrrok base livery used to be white with purple doors (170399) but due to alot of spare NXEA blue paint the doors are now blue. :)
