You have misunderstood my point. "Everyone" meant railway employees, especially drivers, not members of the public. And it is drivers who have been saying that the rule is a bad rule and needs looking at, both the times and tone used.
And I don't think anyone is victim blaming, not...
They did hear it coming, that's why there was only one fatality and not two. Unfortunately they didn't get enough warning. Whistleboards are placed according to linespeed, visibility and any other factor which could affect whether someone can see/hear a train or not. If we could rely on...
That crossing has a whistleboard. Everyone knows the rules were changed a few years ago so horns are not used between 23.00 and 07.00. The girl was killed at 23.20. I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned because had that rule not been brought in, the girl might have heard the train and got out of...
I hate using the Combined Power Brake Controllers, always awkward to use and it doesn't feel like a natural position. Seems unnecessary as well, nobody has ever told me why we use them on new stock or what makes them "better" than the old two stick method. Wasn't keen on sprinters due to poor...
Fine to draw state pension, not company. The ability to draw the company pension and continue to work has recently been withdrawn at my TOC, much to the annoyance of a few approaching their later years. I had this very discussion with one of them who was adamant that as it was their money, of...
The tests are not the same as the trainee tests. You do the SCAAT test and a couple of easy listening and writing tests to see how you process information. Quite why they make qualifieds take the tests is beyond me but there we go.
I was always under the impression (probably incorrectly,) that if you were safeguarded staff and moved to another company not through TUPE, you would lose your BR benefits?
Hi All Aboard.
You are right that international qualifications are not officially recognised, however the skills and experience you have gained will be. In the UK we have a new way of recruiting staff and then training and assessing their competency called "Non Technical Skills" (NTS) which...
On a personal level, it seems that the introduction of GSMR across the North has speeded things up no end. From reminding the signaller of your presence immediately when detained (or being messaged to contact the signaller), to saving the hassle and time involved in securing the cab and using an...
I am prepared to be corrected here, but I am led to believe that every single bay/dead end platform has TPWS overspeed loops. If there are exceptions, Scarborough won't be one of them.
Could be the drivers avoiding reversing over the TPWS stop grids. There are some locations where you know that, with certain traction, if you stop the usual distance from the buffer stops you will reverse over the loops (like the recent Chiltern incident.)
Most managers know the score anyway, I had one on a ride out point some kids out on a path which ran alongside the line and tell me to make sure I give them a toot. One of the best parts of the job IMO, you really seem to make someone's day. (Usually Mum or Dad!)
Are main line drivers even qualified to do a full prep and sign a unit off as fit for traffic? I know I'm not. Bear in mind a full prep and sign off is far more extensive than a safety check. No use coupling and pulling points if the units aren't allowed off depot as they haven't had a prep sign off
And me! I'm actually surprised that there are drivers who hadn't been told this, I had assumed, because of how often it had been drilled into us, that it was common knowledge industry wide. Obviously not! Some of ours have got themselves into bother for waiting until the first station and...
But the presence or otherwise of alcohol could be the difference between dismissal and retraining. I would suspect that had it just been a slightly misguided comment from an on duty guard then a slap on the wrists and maybe a diversity awareness course would be the outcome.
There is nothing...
