Since LM were made aware of this incident some time after it took place, how can anyone say for sure "He was drunk"? He wasn't breathalysed therefore it seems a bit unfair if he is done for being intoxicated.
Agreed. It also has it's limitations. From what others have said on other forums, it has been telling freight drivers to coast uphill for a start. It also seems that signallers let out a train because they expect it to clear a section in a certain time, however DAS is telling the driver to coast...
DAS is Driver Advisory System. Been rolled out across some of the FGW and Scotrail fleet (I think freightliner has it as well.) Tells the driver when to shut off, coast and brake in order to minimise fuel consumption. A lot of drivers ignore it as it isn't compulsory - yet - but TPE are on about...
Its ridiculous to suggest that because they have better traction or routes then they can take their pick. As someone who has driven both pacers and more modern trains, I can absolutely say that pacers and sprinters are far better to drive than the modern stuff which thinks you need to be told...
Yes, Im aware of driver manager wages being higher but that's because, in my TOC, they retain competency. They also deal with disciplinary matters and other managerial things. What I am trying to ask is whether the LMs, who do not retain competency, get paid less than the drivers they manage...
This is very true. Everyone enjoys a good moan on the railway but we all know what side our bread is buttered on. It is demonstrated by the incredibly low turnover of staff to other industries, especially in operational grades. In nearly ten years on the railway, I know of only one driver who...
With respect, there is a big difference between being rules qualified and being a competent driver. It is depressing how someone who cannot do the job and has the benefit of a warm comfy armchair and the comforting blanket of hindsight can pass judgement on those who actually have to do the damn...
Does anyone know where the driver depots are? I know about Donny, West Mids, Peterborough and Eastleigh, any others?

I think its the new grade which is basically a driver who only drives in a possession.
Obviously there were incidents before ERTMS, but the fact is that reliability went down and SPADs went up. I have not heard much else since, hence the framing of my question: Has it settled down? It would appear from some of the responses that the answer is not just yet.
Interesting that, thanks. I was reading the new edition of the RSSB mag the other day which had a two page spread in it about the trial. Basically seemed to say that everything was fine and dandy, no mention of the troubles with the new system. Perhaps unsurprising, but I would have liked a more...
Has the ERTMS system settled down? Seemed to have some serious teething problems, including huge delays, increase in SPADs and was a contributory factor in the Llandabarn level crossing incident. Does anyone on here use it? Obviously I ask because these two depots are where our pioneering ERTMS...
It is like a starter link. You go into it until a vacancy in the main link becomes available. You get your road learning and any other training done quicker (as you are released more often) and you can generally get lieu days granted. It is perfectly normal to go into the supernumary links after...
